Advances in 3D bioprinting for urethral tissue reconstruction.

Urethral conditions affect children and adults, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections, voiding and sexual dysfunction, and renal failure. Current tissue replacements differ from healthy urethral tissues in structural and mechanical characteristics, causing high risk of postoperative complications. 3D bioprinting can overcome these limitations through the creation of complex, layered architectures using materials with location-specific biomechanical properties. This review highlights prior research and describes the potential for these emerging technologies to address ongoing challeng…

Development and systematic characterization of GelMA/alginate/PEGDMA/xanthan gum hydrogel bioink system for extrusion bioprinting.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/alginate-based hydrogels have shown great promise in bioprinting, but their printability is limited at room temperature. In this paper, we present our development of a room temperature printable hydrogel bioink by introducing polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and xanthan gum into the GelMA/alginate system. The inclusion of PEGDMA facilitates tuning of the hydrogel's mechanical property, while xanthan gum improves the viscosity of the hydrogel system and allows easy extrusion at room temperature. To fine-tune the mechanical and degradation properties, meth…

Integrated 3D bioprinting-based geometry-control strategy for fabricating corneal substitutes.

BACKGROUND: The shortage of donor corneas is a severe global issue, and hence the development of corneal alternatives is imperative and urgent. Although attempts to produce artificial cornea substitutes by tissue engineering have made some positive progress, many problems remain that hamper their clinical application worldwide. For example, the curvature of tissue-engineered cornea substitutes cannot be designed to fit the bulbus oculi of patients. OBJECTIVE: To overcome these limitations, in this paper, we present a novel integrated three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting-based cornea substitute …

Bridging Public Health and Health Care for Systems-Level Change: The NYC Coalition to End Racism in Clinical Algorithms, 2021-2023.

The use of race-based clinical algorithms contributes to population-level racial health inequities. To address these inequities, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene convened 10 health systems in the Coalition to End Racism in Clinical Algorithms (CERCA). Our mixed-methods evaluation showed that health systems implemented algorithm change and provider education and that CERCA members perceived the coalition as a catalyst for systems-level change. CERCA is a replicable model for collaboration between public health and medicine to advance health equity and antiracist policy.

Radiotherapy planning of spine and pelvis using single-energy metal artifact reduction corrected computed tomography sets.

Metal artifacts produce incorrect Hounsfield units and impact treatment planning accuracy. This work evaluates the use of single-energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) algorithm for treatment planning by comparison to manual artifact overriding. CT datasets of in-house 3D-printed spine and pelvic phantoms with and without metal insert(s) and two treated patients with metal implants were analysed. CT number accuracy improved with the use of SEMAR filter: root mean square deviation (RMSD) from reference (without metal) reduced by 35.4 in spine and 98.8 in hip. The plan dose volume histograms (D

Anthracene benzene conjugate (ABC): An asymmetric Schiff base for the selective detection of Ag+ ion using fluorimetry and its applications.

Anthracene based chemosensor ABC has been synthesized and characterized through 1H, 13C NMR, mass spectral studies. UV absorption and emission studies performed to identify the sensing behavior of chemosensor ABC. The probe ABC, originally bright fluorescent, selectively sense Ag+ ion by the quenching the fluorescence intensity through a "Switch On-off" process and quench the fluorescence due to the heavy atom effect interaction with the free chemosensor. The binding constant of the probe ABC with Ag+ was calculated as 5.4 × 104 M-1 and the limit of detection upto 1.4 nM level. The practical u

On the English (1931) and Spanish (1932) translations of von Economo's classic monograph on encephalitis lethargica.

The "second" seminal monograph by Constantin von Economo on encephalitis lethargica appeared in print in German in 1929, following his initial report of the disease (eponymously associated with his name) before the Viennese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology and the publication of his "first" monograph on the subject in 1917. The 1929 book was translated into English and Spanish and published by Humphrey Milford in Oxford and Espasa-Calpe in Madrid in 1931 and 1932, respectively. The present article gives some details of those translations and the neuropsychiatrists who produced them. Moreove
