Among the strains of Escherichia coli involved in the etiology of the diarrheal syndrome, several etiopathogenic entities were described. Of them, the strains of enteroadherent E. coli (EAEC) were isolated from about 25% of the patients suffering from an acute diarrheal disease, in which no other etiologies could be established. The present paper synthesizes data from the literature on: the importance of EAEC in the etiology of the acute diarrheal disease; the biotype-serotype-pathogenicity interrelationship; "pathogenicity mechanisms" in EAEC; methods of identifying the EAEC strains.

Leptospires were isolated from the kidneys of four of 211 toads (Bufo marinus) caught on Barbados. Two of the isolates were identified as Leptospira interrogans serovar bim in the Autumnalis serogroup (the most common cause of leptospiral illness on Barbados), and two as possibly new serovars in the Australis serogroup. Sera from 198 of the toads were examined by the leptospire microscopic agglutination test. Fifty-four strains of Escherichia coli belonging to serogroup O157 were examined for the production of Vero cytotoxins VT1 and VT2, and for other properties such as plasmid content, resistance to antimicrobial agents and colicin production. During the years 1984-1985, 1,528 serum samples were taken through out the CAR. Of these sera, 319 (20.8%) contained anti-Filoviridae antibodies (Ebola, Marburg). This figure is higher than those found in Cameroon, Sudan, Gabon and Zaïre. Forty-one clinical isolates of Legionella pneumophila from sporadic cases of legionella pneumonia were collected from laboratories throughout the United Kingdom and were compared with 300 routine environmental isolates using two panels of monoclonal antibodies, covering serogroups 1-10. Eighty-five per cent of the clinical isolates belonged to the subgroup Pontiac of serogroup 1, whilst only 13% of the environmental isolates did. Approximately half of the clinical isolates tested came from patients with a recent history of foreign travel, mainly to southern Europe.

Summarized data on the specific structure of Shigella strains isolated in different territories of the USSR in 1979-1981 are presented. These data indicate that in the intra-specific structure of S. flexneri strains the proportion of serological subvariant 2a increased and that of serological variant 6 and subvariants 16 and 4a decreased during this period. The special status of the strongly haemolytic strains of serovar (sv) 5 of Listeria monocytogenes is reviewed. Besides some biochemical reactions sv 5 strains are characterized by their excessive haemolysis on sheep blood agar and by a positive result of the CAMP test with R. equi. The haemolysis is caused by a soluble thermolabile protein which stimulates the formation of antibodies and which is inhibited by cholesterol. In the serological study of 17 strains from the collection of Shigella provisory serovars (3873-50, 2000-53, 3341-55, 3615-53, 2710-54, 1621-54) differences in the content of K-antigens were revealed: some of them (3341-55, 3615-53) were in the K-form, others (2000-53, 1621-54) in the O-form, and the rest in the OK-form. The data on the relative significance and composition of Sh. dysenteriae serovars isolated in some regions of the USSR in 1975-1979 are presented. Special tests revealed that Endo agar was the best medium, while Ploskirev's agar was the worst medium for growing Sh. dysenteriae 1 (the museum strain and the newly isolated strain from Bangladesh). A new leptospiral serovar in the Pyrogenes serogroup is described. Parallel investigations by the 'classical' cross-agglutinin absorption test method and the 'factor analysis' method determined the serological properties of the new serovar. The serovar name kwale with reference strain Julu is proposed.
