Internal experience of an aging self: A grounded theory study on women's aging awareness beyond midlife.

PURPOSE: Awareness of one's own aging is a critical psychological process that shapes adaptation and well-being in later life. For women, age awareness is influenced by gendered experiences such as bodily changes, menopause, and shifting social roles. This study aimed to develop a grounded theory explaining how women aged 50-75 construct and adapt their awareness of aging through everyday life contexts. METHODS: This study was guided by constructivist grounded theory, informed by symbolic interactionism and social constructionism. Nineteen in-depth interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2

Bio-inspired cognitive robotics vs. embodied AI for socially acceptable, civilized robots.

Although cognitive robotics is still a work in progress, the trend is to "free" robots from the assembly lines of the third industrial revolution and allow them to "enter human society" in large numbers and many forms, as forecasted by Industry 4.0 and beyond. Cognitive robots are expected to be intelligent, designed to learn from experience and adapt to real-world situations rather than being preprogrammed with specific actions for all possible stimuli and environmental conditions. Moreover, such robots are supposed to interact closely with human partners, cooperating with them, and this impl

Glucocorticoids-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice: oral ingestion of corticosterone or hydrocortisone - A comparative study.

Chronic administration of glucocorticoids is widely used to model stress-related depression in rodents. However, corticosterone, the primary endogenous glucocorticoid in rodents, is highly lipophilic and typically requires ethanol dissolution, which may confound behavioral outcomes. Hydrocortisone (cortisol) is also detectable in mouse blood and it displays a closely related dynamics under physiological and stressful conditions to corticosterone. This study compared the behavioral effects of oral exposure to hydrocortisone hemissucinate with corticosterone (dissolved in 1% ethanol) in mice. To

17β-estradiol regulates the behavioral, neuronal, and physiological responses to acute witness stress in female rats.

Females are more than twice as likely as males to develop stress-related conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, but the neural mechanisms underlying this heightened stress sensitivity are unknown. Recent evidence demonstrates that cyclical ovarian hormones may contribute to the augmented stress responses observed in females. Thus, the current experiments were designed to determine the role of estrogen in the neuronal, behavioral, and physiological responses to social stress in female rats. Adult, female, Sprague-Dawley rats underwent ovariectomy or a sham procedure and were implante

Use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in Clinical Care: A Community-Based Allied Health Setting.

OBJECTIVES: Measuring patient health outcomes is important for effective healthcare. Community-based allied health care provides services for people with complex and often deteriorating conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if a single outcome measure was applicable across a multidisciplinary team of eight allied health professions to measure the impact of the team. The chosen measure was the EuroQoL, 5-dimension, 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) which we compared to changes in discipline specific functional and quality of life measures. METHODS: Any adult attending community-based services

Role of Technology in Promoting Heart Healthy Behavior Change to Increase Equity in Optimal Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Populations most affected by cardiovascular health disparities, including underrepresented populations with lower socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, and those living in underserved rural communities, are disproportionately exposed to adverse social determinants of health. Specifically, economic instability and suboptimal living conditions within the neighborhood and built environment directly determine access to resources and opportunities for healthful behaviors. In this scientific statement, we examined the technology-enabled interventions that address cardiovascular health beha

Interactive effects of biological vulnerability and family invalidation on adolescent borderline personality features.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder is theorized to be the result of an interaction between biological vulnerability and an invalidating environment. Yet, few studies have investigated the relationship between these factors in adolescents with borderline personality features (BPF). The study examined the interactive effects of adolescents’ biological susceptibility and family invalidation on the severity of BPF. METHODS: Participants were 82 adolescents high in borderline personality features (high-BPF group) and 30 control adolescents (low-BPF group). Participants’ respiratory sinus a

Behavioral Balance in Tryptophan Turmoil: Regional Metabolic Rewiring in Kynurenine Aminotransferase II Knockout Mice.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive, emotional, and social impairments are pervasive across neuropsychiatric conditions, where alterations in the tryptophan (Trp)-kynurenine pathway and its product kynurenic acid (KYNA) from kynurenine aminotransferases (KATs) have been linked to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In novel CRISPR/Cas9-engineered KAT II knockout (aadat-/- also known as kat2-/-) mice, we observed despair-linked depression-like behavior with peripheral excitotoxicity and oxidative stress. KAT II's role and its crosstalk with serotonin, ind

The impact of alcohol minimum pricing policies on vulnerable populations and health equity: A rapid review.

Alcohol minimum pricing policies, including minimum unit pricing (MUP), are effective strategies for reducing alcohol consumption and related harm. However, their equity implications remain underexplored. We conducted a rapid review of PubMed and Web of Science, identifying 37 real-world studies assessing the impacts of alcohol minimum pricing. Studies from diverse contexts were synthesised with respect to vulnerable populations and health equity, focusing on consumption, health outcomes, and economic effects. Findings indicate that minimum pricing reduces consumption among people who drink he

Health inequality in medieval Cambridge, 1200-1500 CE.

Health inequality is not only a major problem today; it left its mark upon past societies too. For much of the past, health inequality has been poorly studied, mostly because bioarchaeologists have concentrated upon single sites rather than a broader social landscape. This article compares 476 adults in multiple locations of medieval Cambridge (UK). Samples include ordinary townspeople (All Saints), people living in a charitable institution (the Hospital of St. John), and members of a religious order (the Augustinian Friary). These groups shared many conditions of life, such as a similar range
