Adding employment status in the medical record demonstrates its importance as a social determinant of health.

OBJECTIVE: To share findings of a quality improvement initiative to capture employment status in the electronic medical record (EMR) to mitigate the potential impact of work loss on the health of patients by utilizing the results to identify eligible individuals for resources to assist return-to-work efforts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients self-identified employment status through a structured new social determinants of health (SDOH) question within the EMR. An electronic outreach campaign was developed to provide information via the patient portal detailing services within healthcare and th

From Disease to Illness: Reframing Periodontitis Through an Anthropological Lens.

While periodontitis is globally recognized as a significant public health problem, its common definition as a plaque-based inflammatory condition is incomplete. Disease progression, personal experience, and treatment are shaped by social, economic, and structural forces largely invisible in clinical practice and policy. A lens from medical anthropology helps us see periodontitis as more than a clinical diagnosis; it is a lived experience, deeply entangled with a person's social world. The physical reality of inflammation translates into profound emotional distress-from the shame and stigma of

Advanced multiple sclerosis: an exploratory study on a neglected patient population.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated disease that can cause severe physical and cognitive disability. While modern therapies have improved outcomes in relapsing MS, patients with advanced disease remain underserved. In this stage, neurodegeneration dominates, treatment options are limited, and care becomes complex. Yet individuals with advanced MS are largely absent from trials, registries, and structured care pathways, leaving a major evidence gap. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical, social, and treatment-related profile of patients with advanced MS in insti

Intersectionality, gender norms, and young adolescents in context: a review of longitudinal multicountry research programmes to shape future action.

Discriminatory gender norms can intersect and interact with other dimensions of discrimination-such as age, race, ethnicity, disability, education status, and sexual orientation-to shape individuals' experiences and impact their health and wellbeing. This interaction is referred to as intersectionality. Although the theory has been in circulation since the late 1980s, only recently has it gained traction in low-income and middle-income settings, and it has yet to fully penetrate global research on adolescence. The social and structural intersectional drivers of adolescent health and wellbeing,

Association of frailty with workplace social activity, physical activity, and well-being among older employees: a moderated mediation in two income-variant samples.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that frailty is associated with lower physical activity and well-being in old age, but social activities at work may facilitate physical activity and its positive effect on well-being among older employees with frailty. This study, therefore, ascertained whether there is a moderated mediation of the association of frailty, Workplace Social Activity (WSA), and well-being by Physical Activity (PA). METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional design with relevant sensitivity analyses for confounding. The participants were within two Ghanaian samples with different

Essential Advance Care Planning Intervention Features in Low-Income Communities: A Qualitative Study.

CONTEXT: Older adults with low socioeconomic status (SES) participate in advance care planning (ACP) at lower rates than those with higher SES. Community feedback is an essential component of intervention design for communities with fewer social and health resources to ensure that the intervention is relevant and meaningful. OBJECTIVES: To understand the perspectives for potential interventions, we aimed to qualitatively explore participant priorities for ACP intervention development. METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive design, we recruited and conducted individual and one-time, semi-st

Deciphering autism heterogeneity: a molecular stratification approach in four mouse models.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, as well as restrained or stereotyped behaviors. The inherent heterogeneity within the autism spectrum poses challenges for developing effective pharmacological treatments targeting core features. Successful clinical trials require the identification of robust markers to enable patient stratification. In this study, we identified molecular markers within the oxytocin and immediate early gene families across five interconnected brain structures of the soc
