Implementing Social Media Strategies in Community-Partnered HIV Research: Practical Considerations From 3 Ongoing Studies.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, social media has emerged as a pivotal tool in implementation science efforts to address the HIV epidemic. Engaging community partners is essential to ensure the successful and equitable implementation of social media strategies. There is a notable lack of scholarship addressing the operational considerations for studies using social media strategies in community-partnered HIV research. This article seeks to bridge this gap by consolidating field notes and practical considerations derived from 3 ongoing NIH-supported studies focused on Ending the HIV Epidemic in the

A study of expressed emotion in the parental primary carers of adolescents with intellectual impairment.

Expressed emotion (EE) was measured in the parental primary carer (carer) of 92 adolescents with intellectual impairment to examine its associated characteristics. High EE was mainly a result of high levels of emotional overinvolvement. High EE was associated with psychological illhealth, poor-quality marriage and poor practical social support of the carer, and psychiatric disorder in the adolescent with intellectual impairment. This suggests that EE may be a useful indicator of coping difficulties in these families. The subgroup of high EE emotional overinvolvement was associated with a carer

Social capital, functional health status and quality of life among adults in rural Southwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of adults is important for attainment of the third sustainable development goal. Both social capital and health are essential for development, hence research is needed to explore this relationship in low income countries. Therefore, this study explored the association(s) between structural social capital, functional health status, and quality of life among adults in rural southwest Nigeria. METHODS: Cross-sectional data was collected from 922 residents of rural communities in three states of southwest Nigeria. Questions on adult health, subjective well-be

Latent Structures of Social Determinants of Health in Later Life: A Comparison of U.S.-Born and Immigrants.

ObjectivesThis study examined whether the latent structure of social determinants of health (SDOH) differs by nativity and how they relate to health outcomes in later life.MethodsUsing 2016-2018 HRS data, exploratory factor analyses by nativity were conducted, followed by nativity-stratified regressions linking SDOH factors to health outcomes.ResultsFour comparable factors emerged in both groups: neighborhood environment, interpersonal stressors, socioeconomic resources, and family support. Loading patterns showed modest nativity differences: among immigrants, social isolation aligned more str

Are we finally making progress with suicide and self-harm? An overview of the history, epidemiology and evidence for prevention.

Ireland's suicide rate is falling, but suicide and self-harm remain substantial societal problems. It is not possible to predict suicide at the level of the individual but good primary care, good mental health care and good social care all likely reduce risk. In terms of targeted interventions, public health measures, such as paracetamol pack size regulations, have the best evidence base to support them. Despite increased public and professional discussion, much remains to be done to provide effective, coordinated support to those at risk of suicide and those bereaved. In 2016, there were up t

Passing through: meanings of survivorship and support among Filipinas with breast cancer.

Breast cancer among Filipinas in the United States is a major but largely neglected cancer disparity. In 2004, a community- university partnership resulted in the first Filipina breast cancer support group in the San Francisco Bay Area. Building on this partnership, we explored the social and cultural contexts of Filipinas' experiences with breast cancer to inform development of culturally appropriate and sustainable support services and outreach. We utilized multiple qualitative methods (participant observation, individual and small group in-depth qualitative interviews) to identify meanings

Psychosocial profile of pregnant adolescents in a large Australian regional area.

A psychosocial profile was developed of 122 pregnant adolescents attending a public hospital antenatal clinic in a large regional Australian area. Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Support Behaviours Inventory and were interviewed to obtain psychosocial and demographic information. Results revealed that those who were most likely to have either or a combination of poor self-esteem, lack of social support, be unemployed or smoke, were more likely to be living alone or with friends, not have a partner or have a partner for a shorter period, have a partner who was old

Associations Between Social Media-Based Digital Contact with Family and Friends on Loneliness and Well-being Outcomes in Middle-aged and Older Adults: A Mediation Analysis.

Social connections are essential for well-being, particularly in middle-aged and older adults, but maintaining them becomes challenging due to shrinking social networks and physical limitations that hinder participation in social events. Social media offers a potential avenue for increasing social interaction and online social support, thereby reducing loneliness and enhancing well-being. Links among social media, loneliness, and well-being remain unclear due in part to age-related differences in how social media is used and perceived. This study utilized data from MIDUS wave 3 and MIDUS refre

Threat is in the eye of the beholder: social anxiety and the interpretation of ambiguous facial expressions.

The current study investigated the tendency of individuals with high levels of social anxiety to interpret ambiguous facial expressions in a threatening manner. Results obtained from self-report measures were consistent with previous studies in which highly socially anxious individuals endorsed threatening interpretations for ambiguous social information. More importantly, highly socially anxious participants showed relative facilitation of processing of threatening faces following neutral faces when a priming technique was used to eliminate artifact due to response selection bias. These findi

Long-term follow up after sex reassignment surgery.

A long-term follow up of 136 patients operated on for sex reassignment was done to evaluate the surgical outcome. Social and psychological adjustments were also investigated by a questionnaire in 90 of these 136 patients. Optimal results of the operation are essential for a successful outcome. Personal and social instability before operation, unsuitable body build, and age over 30 years at operation correlated with unsatisfactory results. Adequate family and social support is important for postoperative functioning. Sex reassignment had no influence on the person's ability to work.

Examination of spatial polygamy among young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in New York City: the P18 cohort study.

The few previous studies examining the influence of the neighborhood context on health and health behavior among young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) have predominantly focused on residential neighborhoods. No studies have examined multiple neighborhood contexts among YMSM or the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, psychosocial factors, social support network characteristics, health behaviors, and neighborhood concordance. In this study, we assessed spatial polygamy by determining the amount of concordance between residential, social, and sex neig

Social isolation and integration in relation to healthcare utilisation: a cross-sectional survey of emergency department and primary care use.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are critical public health concerns associated with poorer health outcomes and greater demand for healthcare services. With the NHS already under significant pressure, understanding how these social factors influence healthcare demand is crucial. AIMS: This study aimed to compare the distinct contributions of social isolation and social integration to primary care and emergency department use. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 460 UK adults were assessed on: loneliness using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, social integration using the LSNS-6 and heal

Social navigation modulates the anterior and posterior hippocampal circuits in the resting brain.

Social navigation is a dynamic and complex process that requires the collaboration of multiple brain regions. However, the neural networks for navigation in a social space remain largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of hippocampal circuit in social navigation from a resting-state fMRI data. Here, resting-state fMRI data were acquired before and after participants performed a social navigation task. By taking the anterior and posterior hippocampus (HPC) as the seeds, we calculated their connectivity with the whole brain using the seed-based static functional connectivity (s

How does the brain navigate knowledge of social relations? Testing for shared neural mechanisms for shifting attention in space and social knowledge.

How does the human brain support reasoning about social relations (e.g., social status, friendships)? Converging theories suggest that navigating knowledge of social relations may co-opt neural circuitry with evolutionarily older functions (e.g., shifting attention in space). Here, we analyzed multivoxel response patterns of fMRI data to examine the neural mechanisms for shifting attention in knowledge of a social hierarchy. The "directions" in which participants mentally navigated social knowledge were encoded in multivoxel patterns in superior parietal cortex, which also encoded directions o

Social anxiety and cognitive expectancy of aversive outcome in avoidance conditioning.

Fear conditioning studies have shown that social anxiety is associated with enhanced expectancy of aversive outcome. However, the relation between cognitive expectancy and social anxiety has never been tested in avoidance conditioning paradigms. We compared 48 low (LSA) and high socially anxious individuals (HSA) on subjective expectancy of aversive outcome during an avoidance conditioning task. Displays of neutral faces were coupled with an aversive outcome (US): a shout and a shock. Participants could avoid the US by pressing a correct button from a button box. First, HSA showed higher US ex

Investigating the role of perceived autonomy support in moderating the association between diabetes stigma and psychological and diabetes self-management outcomes among adults with type 2 diabetes in Ghana.

Studies on diabetes-related stigma rarely focus on identifying or examining protective factors (e.g., social support and healthcare environment) that can mitigate the adverse effect of this social phenomenon. In this cross-sectional study, we examined perceived autonomy support, a concept from the self-determination theory, as a moderator of the association between diabetes-related stigma and its adverse behavioral and psychological (depression, diabetes distress, and anxiety) correlates. We recruited 190 adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from a tertiary hospital in Ghana. We assessed diabetes
