The relationship between self-compassion and acute stress disorder in mothers whose babies were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Mothers of babies admitted to neonatal intensive care units experience stressful life situations. These experiences can lead to mental conditions such as acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Self-compassion can shape and empower people as they struggle through difficult situations. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-compassion and acute stress disorder in mothers whose babies were hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit. The study sample consisted of 372 mothers. Data were collected using an Information Form, The Severity of Acute Stress Sy

Association between COVID-19 infection and risk of mental disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and meta-analyse the association between COVID-19 and the risk of mental disorders. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and the reference lists of systematic reviews and included cohort studies assessing the association between COVID-19 and mental disorders. Two reviewers independently performed literature screening, data extraction, and the risk of bias assessment. We conducted a random-effect meta-analysis to assess the association and calculated the pooled risk ratio with 95 % confidence interval. RESULTS: Twenty-eight cohorts with a

Trauma Experiences Are Common in Anorexia Nervosa and Related to Eating Disorder Pathology but Do Not Influence Weight-Gain during the Start of Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The main characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) in adults are restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to significant weight loss, disturbed body image, and intense fear of becoming fat. Traumatic experiences (TE) have been reported as common, although less is known about the relationship with other symptoms in severe AN. We investigated the presence of TE, PTSD, and the relation between TE, eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and other symptoms in moderate to severe AN (n = 97) at admission to inpatient weight-restoration treatment. All patients were enrolled in t

Potential Impact of Childhood Abuse on Quality of Life During Mood-Stabilising Treatment in Individuals Living With Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research examining whether childhood abuse affects the quality of life (QoL) of individuals living with bipolar disorder and its improvement over the course of treatment. METHODS: Data from the Clinical Health Outcomes Initiative in Comparative Effectiveness for Bipolar Disorder were used to explore the associations between childhood abuse and multiple domains of QoL among 476 outpatients with bipolar disorder. Rates of change in QoL throughout treatment were explored with a series of Generalised Estimation Equations for repeated measures. RESULTS: At baseline,

Detecting PTSD in Clinical Interviews: A Comparative Analysis of NLP Methods and Large Language Models.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remains under-detected in clinical settings, presenting opportunities for automated detection to identify at-risk patients. This study evaluates natural language processing approaches for binary PTSD classification from clinical interview transcripts using the DAIC-WOZ dataset, which contains semi-structured interviews with standardized psychological assessments. We compared embedding-based methods (SentenceBERT/LLaMA with logistic regression), general and mental health-specific transformer models (BERT/RoBERTa), and large language model prompting strategi

Interwoven oppression: A qualitative study of the contribution of racism and sexism to co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorder.

Racism and sexism are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD), yet few studies examine their role in co-occurring PTSD/SUD. Through qualitative interviews with 23 people of color with PTSD/SUD, we found that racism and sexism influence the onset of men and women of color's PTSD/SUD in gendered ways. Women reported that sexism played a role in their exposure to sexual violence, and that concerns around being blamed or dismissed when reporting sexual trauma because of their gender and race, they used substances to cope. Men reported that racism rende

Psychometric properties of the Ukrainian version of Dissociative Subtype of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Scale (DSPS).

Background: The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (D-PTSD) was introduced in the DSM-5 to identify individuals with PTSD who experience dissociative symptoms, such as derealization and depersonalization. The Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Scale (DSPS) was developed to assess these symptoms but has yet to be validated in Ukrainian, a necessity due to the psychological impact of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate the Ukrainian version of the DSPS, examining its psychometric properties in a sample of trauma-exposed Ukrainian indiv

Grief modular group therapy: theoretical bases and pilot study of a new bereavement intervention programme in China.

Background: Bereavement is a major life stressor, with millions of Chinese individuals experiencing grief each year. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent among bereaved people in China, yet culturally appropriate interventions are scarce. Existing Western-based protocols often showed limited cross-cultural applicability when implemented in the Chinese context, highlighting the need for evidence-based, culturally adapted interventions. Objective: This study aimed to introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed structured Grief Mod

Change Patterns of Posttraumatic and Grief Disorders and Their Somatic Variables in Ongoing Trauma.

IMPORTANCE: This study provides insight into change patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) under conditions of continuous trauma. Clarification of how these disorders are associated with somatization and pain is essential for the assessment and development of integrated care models for continuous trauma-exposed populations. OBJECTIVE: To examine longitudinal change patterns of PTSD, CPTSD, and PGD and assess their associations with somatization and pain. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort study was

Potentially traumatic events and substance use do not predict changes in resting state functional connectivity in early adolescence.

Potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and substance use (SU) are commonly endorsed in early adolescence, a crucial period for neurodevelopment. PTEs and SU are precipitating events in the etiology of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD). Separately, they have been shown to alter within- and between-network connectivity in the three brain networks posited by Menon's Theory of Psychopathology: the default mode network (DMN), fronto-parietal network (FPN), and salience network (SN). While comorbid PTSD+SUD in adulthood shows shared neural underpinnings, thi

The role of alexithymia and maladaptive coping in long-term Trauma: Insights from the aftermath of the October 7th attacks.

The study investigates the psychological effects of alexithymia and maladaptive coping strategies on individuals exposed indirectly to trauma through media coverage. Focusing the October 7th, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel, we explore how alexithymia characterized by difficulty in processing emotions, exacerbates trauma-related symptoms. The research examines 213 participants using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) as well as trauma, somatization and coping questionnaires. Results indicate that individuals with alexithymia experience more severe and prolonged trauma symptoms, including

Perceived social support as a moderator of posttraumatic stress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face elevated psychological distress, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study explored whether perceived social support moderates the relationship between parental gender and PTSD risk. A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted among 142 Arabic-speaking parents (equally distributed between mothers and fathers) recruited from 10 ASD treatment centers in central Jordan. Participants completed standardized measures of PTSD symptoms and perceived social support, along with demographic

Childhood Maltreatment and Borderline Personality Pathology Among Young Women: The Buffering Role of Autobiographical Reasoning About Childhood Experiences.

According to narrative identity theory, the meaning and importance given to childhood events within one's life story (i.e., autobiographical reasoning [AR]) may help explain why only some individuals who experience childhood maltreatment (CM) develop borderline personality (BP) pathology. We test this hypothesis by examining whether AR about childhood emotional experiences, particularly perceived event centrality and meaning-making, moderate relations between CM and BP symptoms, BP traits, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a diverse sample of 216 young women with a previous

Associations between parental alcoholism and delinquent behaviours among youth: exploring serial and parallel mediation by posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, anxiety symptoms and impulsivity.

Background: Despite mounting evidence linking parental alcoholism (PA) with delinquency in youth, little is known about the factors that mediate this link globally. This study, therefore, aimed to explore whether Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) symptoms and impulsivity serially or parallel mediate the associations between PA and delinquency among youth.Method: A random sample of 341 male participants aged between 17 and 25 years (M = 21.34, SD = 2.23) was selected from the Iwawa Rehabilitation Centre for youth affected by delinquency, alcohol o

Neurocognitive Intraindividual Variability in Veterans with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury History and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Veterans with a history of blast-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be at risk for greater cognitive concerns and worse functional outcomes compared to those with either condition in isolation. However, traditional neuropsychological assessment approaches have yielded equivocal results in these populations. The present study examined an alternative method for detecting subtle cognitive inefficiencies: neurocognitive intraindividual variability (IIV), a measure of within-person performance consistency. METHOD: Participants were 79

Identification of a subgroup of post-9/11 veterans with unique combat experiences and worse clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Prior studies have examined the influence of military deployments and combat exposure on post-9/11 Veterans' health and well-being. Fewer studies, however, have focused on the extent to which specific combat experiences relate to clinical outcomes in this Veteran cohort. We sought to identify distinct groups of post-9/11 Veterans based on their combat experience profiles and examine the relationship between combat experiences and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We used data from 21,995 deployed, combat-exposed, Iraq/Afghanistan-era Veterans who enrolled in the VA Million Veteran Progr
