A Case Report of Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture in a Patient With Multimorbidity Treated With Endoscopic Flexor Hallucis Longus Transfer.

Acute Achilles tendon rupture (AATR) in patients with multimorbidity poses a significant therapeutic challenge to surgeons because of the increased risk for wound-healing-related complications. Thus, nonoperative management has been these individuals' most widely adopted treatment. We report a case of a 66-year-old patient with AATR who was treated with endoscopic flexor hallucis longus (FHL) transfer. His medical history was remarkable for recent stroke, hypertension, prediabetes, pemphigus under oral methylprednisolone, smoking, and recent pneumonia. The patient was evaluated up to two years

Giant calcific insertional Achilles tendinopathy with Haglund's deformity following childhood tendon lengthening: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Calcific insertional Achilles tendinopathy (CIAT) is a rare and challenging condition characterized by calcium hydroxyapatite deposition at the Achilles tendon's calcaneal insertion. While typically affecting older individuals, its occurrence in younger patients is uncommon, particularly with large calcific lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 36-year-old male presenting with progressive left Achilles tendon insertional pain and swelling. The patient had a history of Achilles tendon lengthening surgery in childhood. Imaging revealed large, multifocal calcific dep

Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) promotes Achilles tendon repair: from network pharmacology prediction to in vivo mechanistic validation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the key bioactive component of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) for repairing Achilles tendon injury and to elucidate its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A network pharmacology approach was employed to screen for common targets for Danshen in Achilles tendon repair, identifying Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) as the key bioactive component. Its targets were then subjected to Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) and KEGG pathway analyses. Subsequently, a rat model of Achilles tendon injury was established. After a 4-week intervention with Tan IIA, its reparative effects were compr

Editorial Commentary: Failure Following Biceps Long Head Tenodesis Includes Popeye Sign, Cramping, and Tendon Migration.

The long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) is often referred to as a "pain generator" around the shoulder, and tenodesis of the LHBT is a commonly used surgical method for treating pathologies of the tendon. Current literature indicates that tenodesis of the LHBT can lead to reduced pain, improved shoulder function, and a low failure rate. However, the definition of failure following LHBT tenodesis varies. Clinically, postoperative cramping is generally considered a sign of treatment failure, while the appearance of a Popeye sign is usually regarded as a mechanical failure. In addition, recent

Rotator cuff repair with all-suture anchor enhances biomechanical properties and tendon-bone integration in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: All-suture anchor (ASA) is a special type of suture anchor. It has been used to repair rotator cuff tears (RCTs). However, mechanical properties and tendon-bone integration at different time postoperatively remains to be unclear. METHODS: Mechanical testing and water contact angle measurements were conducted for ASA. In vitro biocompatibility was assessed using rat bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs), including live/dead cell staining and Cell Counting Kit-8 assays. ASA was implanted for rotator cuff repair (ASA group) in a New Zealand White rabbit model of RCTs, and a natural rotator

Reconstruction of the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Through a Double Bundle of a Single Patellar Tract and Quadriceps Tendon: A Modified Technique.

The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is one of the important structures that maintains patellar stability during knee flexion and extension. For patients with patellar dislocation, timely surgical reconstruction of the MPFL can reduce the risk of patellofemoral joint degeneration. Different methods of MPFL reconstruction have been reported in the literature. However, complications such as patellar fracture, postoperative foreign body stimulation, and fixation failure caused by inappropriate graft tension are common clinical problems. Therefore, on the basis of physiological anatomy, we pr

Safety and Efficacy of One vs Two Incision Broström Gould with Calcaneal Osteotomy and Peroneal Tendon Debridement Surgery.

Surgical intervention, such as the Broström-Gould procedure, is typically indicated for patients with chronic lateral ankle instability. In this study, we are comparing the safety and efficacy of the Broström-Gould procedure with peroneal tendon debridement, a sliding lateralizing calcaneal osteotomy, and adjuvant procedures performed with a single- versus double-incision approach. Our retrospective analysis included patients who underwent the procedure of interest between 2011 and 2020. Patients were divided into 2 groups: undergoing either a 1-incision (n = 53) or a 2-incision approach (n =

Comparison of Clinical Efficacy between Arthroscopic and Open Surgery for Ogden Type 1-2 Peroneal Tendon Dislocation.

OBJECTIVE: While the incidence of peroneal tendon dislocation (PTD) is relatively low, it is frequently underdiagnosed in clinical practice, and the misdiagnosis or improper treatment of this condition may lead to a decline in patients' quality of life. Currently, the surgical treatment options for PTD mainly include open and arthroscopic surgery. However, in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of these two surgical approaches, further comparative research is needed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the early clinical outcomes of arthroscopic and open surgery i

Effect of Decellularized Amniotic Membrane on the Tendon-Bone Integration in Rotator Cuff Repair: A Comparative Rat Model Study.

OBJECTIVE: Rotator cuff retear after arthroscopy repair is a difficult complication that is often due to poor tendon-bone healing. Decellularized amniotic membrane (DAM) has a variety of bioactive substances which have great potential to enhance tendon-bone healing. However, DAM has three layers, of which the middle basement layer is dense and thick. Whether DAM will hinder tendon-bone healing of rotator cuff after surgical repair is unclear. Our study aims to investigate the effect of DAM on tendon-bone healing of the rotator cuff after surgical repair. METHODS: Thirty-three Sprague-Dawley (

All-endoscopic approach for distal biceps tendon pathology: analysis of long-term outcomes in partial and complete ruptures.

BACKGROUND: Distal biceps tendon (DBT) pathology is a spectrum that ranges from tendinopathy to complete retracted ruptures, and surgical treatment is usually performed via open approaches. The purpose of this study was to analyze safety and long-term outcomes of all-endoscopic surgery for entire spectrum of primary DBT pathology. The hypothesis was that at an all-endoscopic technique would result in satisfactory clinical outcomes and a low complication rate. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent all-endoscopic surgery for primary isolated DBT pathology (bursitis, partial and acute/chro

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure gas discharge plasma enhances tendon-to-bone junction repair in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Plasma is a collection of active particles generated by dissociating molecules and ionizing atoms through applying high energy to a gas, such as high-sound heating or electrical shock. Recently, many reports have been published on the effectiveness of non-thermal atmospheric pressure gas discharge plasma (NTAPP) on living organisms. Furthermore, we have reported on the promotion of bone and tendon repair by NTAPP irradiation. We hypothesized that irradiation of NTAPP would promote the repair of the tendon-bone junction in a rotator cuff repair. This study investigated the effect of
