Since 1992, we have applied a standard questionnaire to all our Meniere's syndrome patients. We ask about other family members affected by the symptoms and about the presence of the usual migraine symptom. Through this questionnaire we have identified a family that has some members affected by Meniere's syndrome alone, some others with associated migraine, and still others with migraine alone. Two members of this family started out with migraine and later in life developed Meniere's syndrome. The genetic transmission follows an autosomal dominant pattern for both Meniere's syndrome and migrain

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Celiac disease (CD) affects approximately 1% of the population and negatively affects aspects of life including physical and social function. The relationship between socioeconomic (SE) factors, symptom severity, and perceived burden of living with CD is not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between income, symptoms, and perceived burden of CD.
METHODS: In this survey study conducted at a tertiary care center, 773 patients 18 years of age or more with biopsy confirmed CD were eligible to participate. Patients completed a survey wit

Whipple's disease is a rare, chronic infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei, an ubiquitary gram positive bacterium. The disease is associated with a high mortality in absence of an antibiotic treatment. The disease can be detected in affected tissues and body fluids by light and electron microscopy, as well as by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Musculoskeletal symptoms such as arthralgia and arthritis frequently represent the first manifestation of this multi-system disease; typical subsequent symptoms are weight loss, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Symptoms of central nervous system involvem

Cytokines have been associated with the development of cancer cachexia. Cytokine dysregulation is thought to cause cachexia and its associated symptoms by negatively affecting physiological homeostasis. Cytokines that have been associated with cachexia are thought to be associated with symptom development. Despite this increased association, there is mixed data regarding the development of symptoms, such as pain, anorexia, and lethargy. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the association of cytokine and C-reactive protein levels over time to determine if levels were associat

OBJECTIVE: In clinical practice, persistent somatic symptoms are regularly explained using a cognitive-behavioral model (CBM). In the CBM, predisposing, perpetuating, and precipitating factors are assumed to interact and to cause the onset and endurance of somatic symptoms. However, these models are rarely investigated in their entirety.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 2114 participants from the general German population completed questionnaires that measured different factors of the CBM. We used state negative affectivity and neuroticism as pre

Warm temperatures induce peripheral vasodilation, decrease afterload, and may concurrently increase the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient. We aimed to assess the impact of subjective ambient temperature on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) symptoms and determine whether they were associated with LVOT gradient, patient quality of life (QOL), and risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). We identified consecutive patients with HC presenting to a tertiary referral center. Of the 173 patients in the study, 143 (83%) had HC symptoms, with ambient temperature change worsening symptoms for 72 p

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is a chronic condition that significantly affects both physical function and quality of life of breast cancer patients. Although there is no definitive cure, various treatment options exist to alleviate its symptoms. Among these, Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is widely regarded as a primary approach. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of CDT for breast cancer patients with upper limb lymphedema and aims to assess the benefits of this treatment despite the challenges and constraints in resource-limited settings.
METHODS: This observational study was cond

Information on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnancy and breastfeeding experiences, as well as on perinatal mental health in Switzerland is limited. In Switzerland, there are few national studies and little information. Using an anonymous online survey accessible after the first wave of the outbreak in Switzerland, we have investigated how this pandemic affected pregnant and breastfeeding women. Among women who completed the survey, 69.0% (1050/1518) indicated the first wave of the pandemic affected their personal habits, 61.0% (689/1131) were affected in their work and 40.0% (632/1

BACKGROUND: The adverse health effects of incarceration are well-documented, affecting individuals throughout their life course. However, the influence of a history of incarceration on end-of-life (EOL) experiences remains unexplored. This study aims to examine how prior incarceration affects individuals' experiences and care needs as they approach the EOL.
METHODS: Leveraging the Health and Retirement Study, we conducted secondary analyses on 1 710 individuals who participated between 2012 and 2018. Through retrospective cohort analysis, we explored the association between incarceration hist

Adolescent depression is a serious public health concern, warranting examination of its development. A negative family emotional climate (NFEC) is one risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms. The specific emotion regulatory processes linking NFEC and depression, however, remain unclear. Cognitive reappraisal, a strategy that entails shifting one's thoughts about an emotion eliciting situation before the emotion is generated, expressive suppression, an emotion regulation strategy where individuals push down their expressions of an emotion after it is generated, and emotional iner

Gait and limb incoordination and ataxia are most often found in patients with brainstem and cerebellar infarcts and hemorrhages. Lesions involving the thalamus and the deep portions of the cerebral hemispheres also may cause ataxia accompanied by weakness and sensory symptoms. Patients who have lesions in the lateral medulla and inferior cerebellum often topple, lean, or veer when attempting to sit, stand, or walk. They list to the side or abruptly veer when walking. The affected limbs are often hypotonic. In pontine lesions, ataxia is accompanied by weakness and pyramidal tract signs as part
