Generalized hair loss and selenium exposure.

The manufacture and maintenance of drums used in photocopy machines involves use of a selenium alloy. A worker employed in this type of job for 6 mo presented with alopecia aereta which later deteriorated to alopecia universalis. As selenium intoxication is known to present with a similar clinical picture, selenium levels in blood and nails of this subject were estimated and compared with those found in other workers. We report a case of alopecia universalis due to occupational selenium intoxication.

Application of Ultraviolet-Induced Fluorescence Trichoscopy (UVFT) in Hair and Scalp Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD) is increasingly utilized in dermatooncology and general dermatology. The objective of the study was to characterize the ultraviolet-induced fluorescence trichoscopy (UVFT) findings in a wide range of hair and scalp conditions. METHODS: Consecutive patients with non-scarring alopecias (alopecia areata, AA, n = 40; androgenetic alopecia, AGA, n = 40), scarring alopecias (frontal fibrosing alopecia, FFA, n = 20; lichen planopilaris, LPP, n = 20; folliculitis decalvans, FD, n = 14; discoid lupus erythematosus, DLE, n = 23), and infl

Helping children cope with hair loss.

Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis are emotionally devastating forms of hair loss, which are difficult to cure. When childhood hair loss is unresponsive to alopecia therapies, both traditional and nontraditional, children may be stigmatized and fall under extreme psychologic distress. The not-for-profit organization Locks of Love began providing custom hair prostheses to children in 1997 and has continued to serve the emotional and cosmetic needs of children with extensive hair loss.

Prolonged and Late-Onset Symptoms of Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Some patients who recover from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have prolonged symptoms such as dyspnea, fatigue, cough, and dysosmia for longer than 120 days after symptom onset. In addition, some patients who recovered from COVID-19 reported hair loss a few months after the onset of the disease. Alopecia is a late-onset symptom of COVID-19. The cause of alopecia is unknown; however, androgenic alopecia and telogen effluvium are possible causes.

Culprits of Medication-Induced Telogen Effluvium, Part 2.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common mechanism underlying medication-related alopecia. The inciting cause of TE may be difficult to identify due to delays in clinically apparent hair loss. Because medication-induced TE is a nonscarring alopecia that typically is reversible, appropriate management requires identification of the underlying trigger and cessation of potential culprit medications. In part 2 of this 2-part series on medication-induced TE, we focus on anticoagulant and antihypertensive medications.

[Hair loss. Causes, diagnosis, clinical manifestations and treatment].

Loss of hair is a common complaint and may lead to psychosocial problems. Even the physiological and mildest forms of alopecia can cause considerable distress, and some degree of dysmorphophobia is experienced in a proportion of the patients. Hair loss may be a benign and transient process, or can be a serious and permanent problem. The majority of hair loss complaints seen in both males and females are caused by androgen-dependent or increased telogen hair shedding. Correct diagnosis is often reached by examining the clinical symptoms and presenting signs. A full explanation and open discussi

Wood's lamp for early detection of Microsporum Canis tinea capitis in children.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric alopecia is increasingly common, influenced by conditions like alopecia areata and infections such as tinea capitis, primarily caused by Microsporum canis. Diagnosing tinea capitis in primary care is challenging due to limited access to advanced tools, leading to treatment delays. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Wood's lamp for early diagnosis of tinea capitis and its role in distinguishing it from other pediatric alopecia types. METHODS: Fifty pediatric patients under 12 with alopecia were enrolled from March 2023 to March 2024. Data collected inc

Hair loss. Common congenital and acquired causes.

Hair loss is a common problem likely to be encountered by a clinical practitioner. The most frequent causes of hair loss in pediatric patients include tinea capitis, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania. In the adult population, causes to be considered are alopecia areata and hair loss associated with systemic disease and hormonal influence. The clinician must be able to separate the types and causes of hair loss into those that reflect primary dermatologic conditions and those that represent reaction to systemic disease.

Deuruxolitinib: New Approval.

Deuruxolitinib (LEQSELVI), a deuterated analogue of the Janus kinase (JAK) 1/2 inhibitor ruxolitinib, is being developed by Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries for the treatment of alopecia areata. In July 2024, deuruxolitinib received its first global approval for the treatment of severe alopecia areata in adults in the USA. Additionally, in March 2026, deuruxolitinib received approval in the same indication in the UK. This article summarizes the milestones in the development of deuruxolitinib leading to the approval for severe alopecia areata in adults.

Hair and scalp disorders in ethnic populations.

Human hair has been classified into 3 major groups, as determined by ethnic origin. In these populations, significant structural and biochemical variations of the hair follicle and shaft are seen, as well as unique hair grooming practices. These structural variations of the hair are closely linked to the common disorders of the hair and scalp, such as acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, seborrheic dermatitis, traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, dissecting cellulitis, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Cutaneous fibrous dysplasia: an incomplete form of the McCune-Albright syndrome.

A number of genetic disorders have been described in limited form. We report a patient with precocious puberty, large irregularly shaped café-au-lait spots since birth and a diffuse scalp alopecia showing the cutaneous changes of fibrous dysplasia. Histologically, the hair follicles were replaced by convolutions of fibrous tissue. This is to our knowledge the first patient reported with an apparently localized cutaneous form of this syndrome, a pattern predicted by the recently described somatic mutation of the Gs alpha gene. This is the second patient reported to our knowledge with the cutane

Lipid nanocarriers as innovative strategies for hair regrowth.

Alopecia, or hair loss, is a multifactorial condition that may arise from genetic, hormonal, or autoimmune causes. This review outlines the major types of alopecia and discusses their underlying etiologies, along with the limitations associated with current therapeutic approaches, including poor efficacy, adverse effects, and low patient adherence. In recent years, lipid-based nanoparticles have emerged as promising carriers for improving the delivery of therapeutic agents to the scalp and hair follicles. The present review summarizes different treatment strategies for alopecia while highlight

Follicular degeneration syndrome in men.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Follicular degeneration syndrome (FDS, formerly called hot comb alopecia) has only been described in black women. The clinical and histologic features of eight black men with a scarring alopecia resembling FDS were studied. OBSERVATIONS: All eight men had evidence of scarring alopecia, which was most prominent on the crown of the scalp. None of the men were using chemical or physical modalities to straighten or style the hair. Overall, this group of men had more evidence of active inflammation than did the previously described women with FDS. The histologic features in

Hair loss in women.

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a clinical problem that is becoming more common in women. Female alopecia with androgen increase is called female androgenetic alopecia (FAGA) and without androgen increase is called female pattern hair loss. The clinical picture of typical FAGA begins with a specific "diffuse loss of hair from the parietal or frontovertical areas with an intact frontal hairline." Ludwig called this process "rarefaction." In Ludwig's classification of hair loss in women, progressive type of FAGA, 3 patterns were described: grade I or minimal, grade II or moderate, and grade I
