Lower-extremity asymmetry and patellofemoral pain in young female dancers: A 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a prevalent injury in young dancers, with low recovery rates. This study aimed to assess PFP in young female dancers over a 2-year period while examining associations between lower-limb asymmetry and PFP. METHODS: Thirty-two female dancers (aged 13.6 ± 2.9 years) were clinically examined for PFP at the baseline, 12 months later (first follow-up), and 24 months later (second follow-up). Dancers were also assessed for anthropometric measurements, joint range of movement (ROM), and muscle strength. RESULTS: PFP was identified in 46.9%, 53.1%, and 46.9% o

Comparing the Effects of Progressive Balance and Hip Strengthening Rehabilitation in Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability.

CONTEXT: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with motor-behavioral and sensory-perceptual impairments, including reduced balance performance, hip strength, and ankle function, and increased disablement, and injury-related fear. Progressive balance training (BAL) and hip strengthening (HIP) can both improve balance and function, but their comparative effects are unknown. Our objective was to compare the effects of progressive BAL and HIP on balance, hip strength, and patient-reported outcomes in those with CAI. METHODS: Forty-five individuals with CAI volunteered for this randomized

Achilles Tendon Loading during Running Estimated Via Shear Wave Tensiometry: A Step Toward Wearable Kinetic Analysis.

PURPOSE: Understanding muscle-tendon forces (e.g., triceps surae and Achilles tendon) during locomotion may aid in the assessment of human performance, injury risk, and rehabilitation progress. Shear wave tensiometry is a noninvasive technique for assessing in vivo tendon forces that has been recently adapted to a wearable technology. However, previous laboratory-based and outdoor tensiometry studies have not evaluated running. This study was undertaken to assess the capacity for shear wave tensiometry to produce valid measures of Achilles tendon loading during running at a range of speeds. M

Similar Clinical Outcome in Locking and Conventional Plate Osteosynthesis for the Treatment of AO 44-B2 Ankle Fractures.

IntroductionBiomechanical studies have proved that locking plates have better primary stability besides versatility regarding fracture pattern while reducing bone contact and bridging the gap, whereas conventional nonlocking plates (plus lag screw) depend on bone-plate compression. The clinical benefit of locking plates over nonlocking plates remains unanswered, however. Therefore, this retrospective cohort study was set up to test the hypothesis that the use of locking plates for unstable ankle fractures will result in fewer re-displacements, superior bony healing, and functional and clinical

Orthopedic problems in athletes.

Physicians and patients must recognize the demands of the sport involved, as well as the individual's ability to meet those demands. Careful analysis of the sport and examination of the patient to assess recovery and chances of reinjury are mandatory, if he is to enjoy sports after injury. Physicians should become familiar with padding, shoes, warm-up programs, preparticipation examinations, and protective equipment and devices, all of which are helpful in preventing sports injuries. We have touched only briefly on the epidemic problem of quality of life trauma that is part of our society. Bec

Re-evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the 0.9 ankle-brachial index threshold in penetrating lower extremity trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Current guidelines recommend additional imaging when the ankle-brachial index (ABI) is ≤0.9 after extremity trauma; however, the accuracy of this 0.9 threshold compared with other values has not been evaluated. The primary aim of this study was to compare the safety and effectiveness of various ABI thresholds in predicting lower extremity vascular injuries after penetrating trauma. We hypothesized that a lower ABI threshold can be used safely to avoid unnecessary imaging. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a single level I trauma center from January 2015 to Dece

Temporary Bridge Plating vs Primary Arthrodesis of the First Tarsometatarsal Joint in Lisfranc Injuries: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Unstable Lisfranc injuries are best treated with anatomic reduction and stable fixation. There are controversies regarding which type of stabilization is best. In the present study, we compared primary arthrodesis of the first tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint to temporary bridge plating in unstable Lisfranc injuries. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with Lisfranc injuries were included and followed for 2 years. Twenty-four patients were randomized to primary arthrodesis (PA) of the medial 3 TMT joints, whereas 24 patients were randomized to temporary bridge plate (BP) over the first TMT j

Arthroscopic Assessment of Syndesmotic Instability in the Sagittal Plane in a Cadaveric Model.

BACKGROUND: Syndesmotic instability is multidirectional, occurring in the coronal, sagittal, and rotational planes. Despite the multitude of studies examining such instability in the coronal plane, other studies have highlighted that syndesmotic instability may instead be more evident in the sagittal plane. The aim of this study was to arthroscopically assess the degree of syndesmotic ligamentous injury necessary to precipitate fibular translation in the sagittal plane. METHODS: Twenty-one above-knee cadaveric specimens underwent arthroscopic evaluation of the syndesmosis, first with all synd

The usefulness of commercially available serological tests in the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment in patients with alveolar echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Significant increases in injuries were observed in the 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) season; these were attributed to an increased acute to chronic workload due to the interrupted preseason and compressed season during the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2021, the MLB resumed its regular schedule. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the injury incidence and epidemiology of the 2021 MLB season compared to the injury incidence in the 2020 season and pre-COVID-19 seasons. The hypothesis was that, with the return to normal preseason tr
