Survey of normalized CTDIvol values across four major computed tomography vendors for use in the MIRDct software.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is an essential imaging modality for disease diagnosis, treatment efficacy, and image-based guidance of various medical procedures. The locally deposited radiation dose in tissues, as estimated by the computed tomography dose index (CTDI), can vary considerably across exposures delivered by CT scanners from different vendors, even if the scans are performed using similar technique factors, such as tube potential and tube current. The volumetric CTDI (CTDIvol) is a common dose metric that reports an average radiation dose (in mGy) delivered to a specific vol

Dose optimization with fully flexible vertex positioning for LATTICE radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Lattice radiotherapy (LATTICE) is a technique of spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) that delivers high radiation doses to specific regions (vertices) within a large tumor, forming a spatially modulated "lattice" pattern, while surrounding areas receive lower doses to minimize damage to healthy tissues. Although the original conception of LATTICE did not prescribe any rigorous symmetry, and early clinical implementations relied on manual vertex placement tailored to tumor shape and anatomical constraints, more recent automated approaches have introduced regular patterns

Feasibility, safety and outcomes of contrast-free cardiac resynchronisation therapy device implantation: a retrospective cohort comparison.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular lead (LVL) implantation can be challenging in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT). Therefore, contrast is commonly used to visualize the coronary venous system. However, contrast use is correlated with substantial risks such as contrast-induced nephropathy and anaphylactic reaction. Case studies suggest feasibility of LVL implantation without coronary sinus (CS) venography. PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the procedure characteristics, outcome, and safety of contrast-free and contrast-aided LVL implantation. METHODS: 346 LVL implantations performed between 2017 an

Application value of combining low tube voltage and deep learning image reconstruction algorithm in head and neck CT angiography with reduced radiation and contrast doses.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the value of combining low tube voltage (80kVp) and deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) in head and neck CT angiography (CTA) with reduced radiation and contrast doses, in comparison with routine dose scans with 100kVp and adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASIR-V). METHODS: This prospective study included 100 patients scheduled for head and neck CTA due to vascular diseases. Patients were prospectively and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the lower-dose group (group A, n = 50) with 80kVp, automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) scannin

Cardiovascular Outcomes Associated With Exposure To Radiation Therapy In Thoracic Malignancies: An Insight Study Using the National Inpatient Database.

Background Thoracic irradiation is a widely used therapeutic and palliative treatment option for thoracic neoplasms. However, short- and long-term cardiovascular adverse effects of radiation exposure remain a major concern. The short-term adverse effects are observed within months of exposure such as pericardial diseases; meanwhile, the long-term complications are usually insidious and manifest over decades, such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, conduction disorders, constrictive pericarditis, and valvular heart disease. Hence, long-term cardiovascular adve

Biodosimetric analysis of head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy by dicentric chromosome aberration assay.

BACKGROUND: Biodosimetry is the quantification of absorbed radiation dose using biological material obtained from an exposed individual. Radiation can cause different types of chromosomal aberrations, including stable aberrations like translocations and unstable ones like micronuclei, dicentric chromosomes (DC), acentric, and ring forms. Dicentric chromosome assay has become the "gold standard" for cytogenetic biodosimetry due to its reproducibility, specificity (low baseline rates), and sensitivity to low doses. Using existing calibration curves and models obtained from in vitro irradiation o

Clinical and dosimetric predictors of radiation pneumonitis in early-stage lung cancer treated with Stereotactic Ablative radiotherapy (SABR) - An analysis of UK's largest cohort of lung SABR patients.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) is the standard treatment for early-stage medically inoperable lung cancer. Predictors of radiation pneumonitis (RP) in patients treated with SABR are poorly defined. In this study, we investigate clinical and dosimetric parameters, which can predict symptomatic RP in early-stage lung cancer patients treated with SABR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated with lung SABR between May 2009 and August 2018, in a single United Kingdom (UK) radiotherapy center were included. The patient's baseline characteristics, treatment details, and toxic

First insights into the new particle formation mechanism in Istanbul.

Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) is a major source of ultrafine particles (UFPs) in urban environments. However, the characteristics and controlling mechanisms of NPF remain poorly understood in megacities influenced by complex emission mixtures and meteorological conditions. This study presents the first multi-site observational evidence of NPF in Istanbul, Turkiye, based on particle number size distribution (PNSD) measurements from 10 to 400 nm conducted over approximately 20 days in each season within a single year across three locations representing distinct urban characteristics;

Can 8-oxo-dG be used as a predictor for individual radiosensitivity?

PURPOSE: To develop predictive tests for individual radiosensitivity of tumor patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Acute skin reactions were clinically scored among 40 women after 46 Gy, given with 2 Gy fractions to breast and regional lymph nodes, adjuvant after surgery. The acute skin reactions were compared to the excretion of 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) in urine, determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detector. Specimens of urine were collected before and during postoperative radiation treatment at given intervals. We compared a gro

From Magnetic Moment to Magnetic Particle Imaging: A Comprehensive Review on MPI Technology, Tracer Design and Biological Applications.

Background/Objectives: Magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as powerful tools for biomedical imaging, targeted drug delivery, and hyperthermia therapy. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is among the most promising technologies built around its properties: a radiation-free, quantitative tomographic modality that detects superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) directly against a biologically silent background. This review synthesizes MPI's physical principles, nanoparticle design strategies, and preclinical applications within the broader landscape of magnetic material engineering for b

XPS analysis of polymer brush coatings.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a powerful surface-sensitive technique widely used for the chemical characterization of thin films and interfaces. XPS detects the outermost ∼10 nm of organic films, making it useful for studying the surface of polymer-brush coatings. Despite the widespread use of XPS for polymer brushes, data interpretation and reporting practices often remain inconsistent, particularly for chemically complex or beam-sensitive systems. This tutorial review provides a practical overview of XPS analysis of polymer-brush coatings, with emphasis on experimental considerat

Pharmacokinetic Optimization of Radiocopper-Based Theranostic Pretargeting.

In vivo pretargeting offers a strategy to improve nuclear imaging and radiopharmaceutical therapy by increasing tumor-to-background activity concentration ratios and decreasing radiation burden to healthy tissues. One particularly promising approach to in vivo pretargeting is predicated on the inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) ligation between tetrazine (Tz)-based radioligands and trans-cyclooctene (TCO)-bearing immunoconjugates. Not surprisingly, the performance of such systems is highly dependent upon the pharmacokinetic profiles of the small molecule radioligands. Herein, we repor

Comparison of outcomes in high-risk prostate cancer patients treated with low-/high-dose-rate brachytherapy plus external beam radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Although brachytherapy is a standard treatment option for patients with high-risk prostate cancer, only a few studies have compared low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) and high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT). We applied propensity score-based inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) to compare oncological outcomes for LDR-BT and HDR-BT. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed prognosis in 392 patients with high-risk localized prostate cancer who had undergone brachytherapy plus external beam radiation. IPTW was applied to adjust the Kaplan-Meier survival analyses and Cox pro

Re-resection of Microscopically Positive Margins Found on Intraoperative Frozen Section Analysis Does Not Result in a Survival Benefit in Patients Undergoing Surgery and Intraoperative Radiation Therapy for Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative frozen-section analysis provides real-time margin resection status that can guide intraoperative decisions made by the surgeon and radiation oncologist. For patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer undergoing surgery and intraoperative radiation therapy, intraoperative re-resection of positive margins to achieve negative margins is common practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether re-resection of positive margins found on intraoperative frozen-section analysis improves oncologic outcomes. DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study. SETTINGS: Th

Gas puff imaging diagnostic for fluctuation studies in alternative divertor configurations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak.

Controlling power and particle exhaust is a critical challenge for magnetic-confinement fusion devices. Therefore, the dynamics of the transient filamentary transport in the divertor region need to be well characterized, especially in the newly designed upper divertor of ASDEX Upgrade (AUG). To address this, we have developed a two-color gas puff imaging (GPI) system optimized for the new experimental capabilities. The diagnostic employs a fast in-vessel helium valve, a compact periscope with a fiber-optic image guide, and a single camera that simultaneously records two helium lines. This arra

'Here comes the sun': pigmentary traits and sun habits in women with endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited but interesting evidence suggesting that endometriosis may be associated with specific pigmentary traits and sun habits. In this case-control study, we aimed to further clarify this point. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with a first laparoscopic diagnosis of endometriosis according to Holt and Weiss criteria were selected as cases. Controls were women who underwent laparoscopy during the same study period, but who were found to be free of the disease. Selected women were interviewed and examined by two trained physicians.
