[The "hip value" as a criterium for the operative treatment of CDH in juveniles (author's transl)].

Planimetric measuring was performed at the X-rays of the pelvis of 2027 mainly juvenile patients in order to determine the socalled "hip value". We were able to define a clear statistical difference between normal and pathological values. It was possible to use the hip value as a parameter for the displasia of the hip and with additional clinical data to give a prognosis about the development of pathological hips. In addition to this guide lines for corrective operative procedures could be established. Extreme displastic joints with a hip value of more than 30 need immediate operative treatmen

Strain on the interarticular stress distribution. Measurements regarding the development of spondylolysis.

In discussion the aetiology of spondylolysis, attention has been increasingly directed to the biomechanics of the lumbar vertebral column and the lumbo-sacral transition. The theory of a traumatic induction of spondylolysis was tested with stress distribution measurements on the vertebral column of cadavers. Using stretch measuring strips it was possible to investigate, the strain exerted upon the interarticular portion of the intact lumbar vertebral column preparation. A particular strain upon the pars interarticularis occurs through hyperextension, axial stress and torsion of the lumbar vert

Fractures of the zygoma. A geometric, biomechanical, and surgical analysis.

We present a four-part study of the cosmetic results of common zygomatic fracture reduction techniques: (1) a geometric analysis of an idealized paper and clay model; (2) a topographic analysis of zygomatic fractures in the dry skull; (3) a biomechanical analysis of fixation techniques in the fresh cadaver; and (4) a retrospective and prospective review of our clinical experience. The following are concluded: Alignment of the fracture at three points and fixation at two stable points provide the most accurate and satisfactory postoperative results. Masseteric contraction may cause late displac

[Injury of the patella (author's transl)].

Fractures of the patella account for about 1% of all fractures. They result from the impact of direct or indirect forces. Various fracture types are distinguished. Treatment of simple transverse or oblique fractures consists of anatomic reduction, with special attention to perfect reconstruction of the retro-patellar gliding surface. Tension banding is used for fixation to achieve functional stability. Comminuted fractures in the pole region may require partial resection along with careful reconstruction of the extensor mechanism. In cases of complete communition of the patella, early patellec

Irreducible fracture dislocation of the ankle due to posterior dislocation of the fibula.

In order to prevent permanent disability, a proper diagnosis of the fixed posterior fracture dislocation of the fibula with fracture dislocation of the ankle joint must be made. Full-length (knee to ankle) radiographs are necessary to make this diagnosis. Although a closed reduction has been described as successful, we feel that an open reduction is usually necessary. Freeing of the trapped fibula from behind the tibia results in a satisfactory reduction of this fracture dislocation. The reduction and fixation of the malleolar fragment is then simple, and an excellent result can be expected.

Experimental measurement of maximum torque capacity of long bones.

By means of a new method with high precision (error 3.1 percent), the maximum torque capacity of an entire long bone from an experimental animal was measured under standardized conditions within 10 minutes after sacrifice of the animal.

Identification Method for Seated Balance Control Based on Horizontal Support-Surface Sway and Dual Force-Platform Measurements.

Identifying seated balance control may contribute to estimation of time delay and evaluation of vestibular weighting. However, few practical methods exist for measuring seated body motion or identifying seated balance control. This study aimed to estimate upper-body center of mass (COM) displacement during sitting under horizontal sway of the support surface using a practical measurement method and to identify a seated balance control system for each individual. Two force platforms under the buttocks and feet were synchronized with a support surface accelerometer. Under unpredictable horizonta

Dynamic stability in sit-to-walk transition: A quantitative analysis based on age-related momentum distribution and lower extremity kinematics.

PURPOSE: The sit-to-walk (STW) transition serves not merely as a highly prevalent functional movement in activities of daily living but also as a pivotal task paradigm for elucidating overall motor control strategies. The objective of this study was to comparatively evaluate the stability control characteristics between two groups during STW transitions and to explore the underlying mechanisms associated with potential fall risks. METHODS: Lower-limb differences between the two groups were assessed using independent samples t-tests, statistical parametric mapping, and phase-average comparison

Impact of age and ballet experience on overground gait kinematics and kinetics.

BACKGROUND: Ballet strengthens leg muscles, improves balance, and lowers fall risk, but its effects on gait remain under-researched. This study analyzed spatiotemporal gait parameters, dynamic gait stability, and kinetic measurements during overground walking in young professional ballet dancers, older recreational ballet dancers, and non-dancers. METHODS: Sixty participants (10 young dancers, 10 young non-dancers, 20 older dancers, 20 older non-dancers) walked at their preferred pace while their full-body kinematics and kinetics were collected. Gait speed was the primary outcome. Secondary o

Shaping smooth muscle forces: the role of preconditioning in urinary smooth muscle.

Smooth muscle (SM) exhibits rapid mechanical adaptation in response to various stimuli, posing challenges for reproducible experimental results and consistent material parameter determination in biomechanical modeling. Preconditioning involving repeated loading and unloading cycles is commonly used to stabilize mechanical responses before testing. However, their influence on tissue properties and data variability remains underexplored. This study compares the effects of three preconditioning routines-passive cycling (PCYC), no preconditioning (PNPC), and free contraction (PFC)-on the active an
