Pre-Exposure Intranasal Treatment with Neomycin Sulfate Reduces Transmission of Influenza B Virus.

Background/Objectives: Influenza B virus infection contributes substantially to annual morbidity and mortality, accounting for 20% to 30% of influenza-associated deaths worldwide. Although vaccination reduces the risk of severe disease, widely used inactivated influenza vaccines are often insufficient to prevent virus transmission. Moreover, influenza B viruses are less susceptible to commonly used antivirals than influenza A viruses. New approaches are therefore required to decrease disease burden and limit virus spread. Neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, was recently shown to mitigate S

Rising clustering of metabolic risk factors and behavioral-metabolic profiles in Viet Nam, 2015-2021: repeated cross-sectional surveys.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence on the burden and clustering of metabolic non-communicable disease risks and on data-driven risk profiles remains limited. This study assessed trends in the clustering of metabolic risk factors in Viet Nam from 2015 to 2021 and identified behavioral-metabolic profiles in 2021. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional design was used, using national STEPS data from 2015 (n = 3,074) and 2021 (n = 3,712), both of which included participants who completed all survey components. Behavioral risk factors (smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, and low fruit and vegetable intake)

Sex differences in the association between cumulative social risk and life's essential 8 cardiovascular health scores in U.S. adults.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular health (CVH) disparities persist in the U.S., often shaped by social risk factors. However, few studies have examined how individual and cumulative social risks relate to CVH across sex. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the 2013-2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). CVH was defined by Life's Essential 8 (LE8) which includes diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure. LE8 scores range from 0 to 100 and were categorized as low (<50), moderate (50-79), or

Age- and sex-specific predictive performance of obesity indices for hypertension in the Persian (Shahedieh) cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The rising global prevalence of obesity and its associated negative health outcomes impose a substantial burden on healthcare systems. This study aimed to investigate the predictive power of obesity-related indices for hypertension (HTN) in an Iranian population. METHODS: This prospective study included 7793 individuals aged 35-70 years, without HTN, who were enrolled in the Shahedieh cohort study in 2016. During the 4-year follow-up period, HTN status was determined via annual telephone interviews. A conditional time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was app

ACTH-independent hypercortisolism across the cardiometabolic spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that the prevalence of hypercortisolism in patients with cardiometabolic risk factors is much higher than previously thought. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of ACTH-independent hypercortisolism across the spectrum of cardiometabolic risk. METHODS: Participants were prospectively recruited into three cohorts to undergo protocolized assessment of adrenal physiology:1) normotensive participants; 2) participants with hypertension and obesity, but without diabetes; 3) participants with diabetes and overweight/obesity. All participants (n=216)

Role of genetic risk on progression to diabetes in children with acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an established risk factor for diabetes, with approximately 20% of children developing either prediabetes or diabetes within one year of their first episode. Little is known about the diabetes pathophysiology or which individuals are at highest risk. We aimed to evaluate whether genetic risk scores (GRS) for type 1 (T1D) and polygenic risk scores (PRS) type 2 diabetes (T2D) are associated with progression to dysglycemia following AP. METHODS: Clinical data were available for 123 children (mean age (IQR), 12 (8-15) years; mean body mass index (BMI), 21.8)

Baseline Functional Performance Predicts Better Long-Term Self-Reported Physical Function After Auto-HSCT.

Background/Objectives: Determination of baseline predictors of longer-term quality of life (QOL) after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Auto-HSCT) may identify patients with the greatest supportive care needs. We hypothesized that baseline older age, weight loss, and worse functional performance would negatively predict QOL over two years post-HSCT. Methods: Physical function, body composition, and QOL were assessed before (PRE) and one month (1MO) after Auto-HSCT in U.S. Veterans (N = 23). QOL and survival were also assessed approximately every six months for two years afte

Adolescent patellofemoral pain syndrome: reappraisal of pathophysiology and implications for clinical management.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent patellofemoral pain syndrome (APFS) is the most common cause of knee pain in this population. Despite its high prevalence, it remains frequently underestimated and is often considered a benign and self-limiting condition. However, persistent symptoms, significant psychosocial burden, and limited long-term efficacy of conventional treatments challenge this traditional view and call for an updated understanding of its underlying mechanisms and management. MAIN BODY: This narrative review is based on a structured literature search conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar, wi

An AI-augmented review of childhood atopic dermatitis biomarkers across genetic, immune, microbial, and metabolic domains.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent inflammatory skin disease and a major source of disease burden in children. Biomarker studies in childhood AD span genetic, immune, microbial and metabolic domains, but prior reviews have often focused on single molecular layers, specific sample sites or clinical classification. As a result, the field lacks an integrated, systems-level synthesis that compares and contextualizes biomarkers across domains while clearly distinguishing evidence strength. The rapid growth of literature in this field also poses practical challenges for traditional ma

Towards caring communities: A community-based qualitative inquiry of family caregiving for people who use drugs in rural settings.

BACKGROUND: The unregulated toxic drug supply has had a disproportionate impact on rural communities across Canada, yet most health and social interventions target urban settings. Drawing on the Care Collective's (2020) work on universal care, families often provide care within the larger context of "careless" communities and governments that prioritize economic productivity over relational wellbeing. Although there is a growing body of research on care and caregiving experiences, little is known about the experiences of family caregivers of people who use drugs (PWUD) in rural settings. METH

Isolation of a highly virulent colibactin-positive tumor-promoting strain of Escherichia coli from the gut microbiota of an adult.

Recent studies have pointed to critical roles for microbes in both exacerbation of and protection from the development of colon cancer. While much has been learned, the field remains understudied, with functional studies available for only a handful of bacteria. To identify novel microbes associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) development, we employed a preclinical chemical carcinogenesis CRC mouse model using germ-free mice that were colonized with human microbiotas. During the course of these studies, we identified a microbiota that exacerbated CRC, from which we isolated an Escherichia col

Associated factors, nonlinear risk patterns and effect heterogeneity of severe injuries in recreational skiers and snowboarders.

BACKGROUND: Severe injuries in recreational alpine skiing and snowboarding impose disproportionate clinical and societal burden. Evidence on modifiable countermeasures beyond helmets remains fragmented and may vary across risk profiles and exposure conditions. This study aimed to identify factors associated with severe injuries among recreational skiers and snowboarders, and to examine nonlinear dose-response relationships and effect modification by preventive practices. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional injury-severity study of injured adult skiers and snowboarders treate

Glycoprotein Nonmetastatic B⁺ Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells Mediate Radiation-Induced Immune Suppression in Prostate Cancer and Are Targetable to Improve Systemic Control.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) provides excellent local control for localized prostate cancer (PC); however, systemic relapse remains the primary cause of death in high-risk patients, underscoring the need to understand and therapeutically address radiation-induced immune suppression. Here, we identify a previously unrecognized myeloid checkpoint pathway driven by glycoprotein nonmetastatic B (GPNMB⁺) myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) as a dominant systemic response to clinical SBRT and demonstrate a tractable strategy to counter it. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We used

Association of respiratory health with occupational exposures in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) cohort: a multinational longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposures are contributors to chronic respiratory diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where regulatory policies are limited. We investigated associations between occupational exposures and respiratory outcomes using longitudinal data from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. METHODS: We analysed data from 4237 participants across 17 sites, mostly in LMICs. Occupational exposures were assessed by self-report (never vs ever) and the ALOHA+Job Exposure Matrix for vapours, gases, dusts, fumes (VGDF), pesticides, solvents and metals
