Safety evaluation of MA-T after ingestion in mice.

MA-T (Matching Transformation System®) is a proprietary chemical mixture for on-demand production of aqueous chlorine dioxide that is used for the treatment of oral malodor. MA-T is also an effective disinfectant against at least 39 pathological microorganisms, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, and therefore may be useful as a disinfectant mouthwash to prevent the spread of infection. Accidental ingestion is the putative worst hazard scenario associated with mouthwash use; therefore, here we investigated the safety of MA-T ingestion in mice. Mice were provided drinking

'I don't know which is the chicken and which is the egg': A qualitative study of weight loss-related beliefs and behaviours among adults with psoriasis and comorbid obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a common (30%-40%) comorbidity of psoriasis. Weight loss is shown to improve the severity of psoriasis; however, little is known about the factors that may influence successful weight loss in the context of obesity and psoriasis. The current qualitative study aimed to explore the obesity-associated beliefs, perceptions, and behaviours related to weight loss in psoriasis. Preferences for a weight loss intervention were also explored. DESIGN: Qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 adults (62.5% male) with moderate-to-severe psoriasis and ob

Understanding sarcopenic obesity in young adults in clinical practice: a review of three unsolved questions.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to summarize the available literature on three yet unsolved questions, namely: 1) the dilemma surrounding definition of sarcopenic obesity (SO), especially in young adults; 2) the potential impact of this phenotype on weight-loss programme outcomes; and 3) the strategies for optimum management (prevention/treatment) of SO in clinical practice. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A literature review using the PubMed/Medline database was conducted, and data were summarized based on a narrative approach. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Firstly, SO can be screened by the 30-sec sit-to-stand test

Influence of Respiratory Gas Density on Tidal Volume during Mechanical Ventilation: A Laboratory Investigation and Observational Study in Children.

Fluid mechanics show that high-density gases need more energy while flowing through a tube. Thus, high-density anesthetic gases consume more energy to flow and less energy for lung inflation during general anesthesia. However, its impact has not been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of high-density anesthetic gases on tidal volume in laboratory and clinical settings. In the laboratory study, a test lung was ventilated at the same pressure-controlled ventilation with 22 different gas compositions (density range, 1.22-2.27 kg/m3) using an anesthesia machine. A pneu

Application of the Two-Dimensional Entropy Measures in the Infrared Thermography-Based Detection of Rider: Horse Bodyweight Ratio in Horseback Riding.

As obesity is a serious problem in the human population, overloading of the horse's thoracolumbar region often affects sport and school horses. The advances in using infrared thermography (IRT) to assess the horse's back overload will shortly integrate the IRT-based rider-horse fit into everyday equine practice. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of entropy measures to select the most informative measures and color components, and the accuracy of rider:horse bodyweight ratio detection. Twelve horses were ridden by each of the six riders assigned to the light, moderate, and heavy gr

Metabolomic evaluation of serum metabolites of geese reared at different stocking densities.

1. Stocking density is an issue for poultry production. High stocking density can impact biochemical parameters, production, and reproductive performance; however, information regarding the effects of stocking density on serum metabolites in geese is limited.2. Twenty-day-old, Sanhua male geese (n = 240) were allocated to one of two experimental groups for 50 days. One group was housed under a low stocking density (LSD; two birds per m2) and one under a high stocking density (HSD; five birds per m2). Body weight and feed intake were recorded every 10 d. Eight serum samples per group were used

Functional ecological convergence between the thylacine and small prey-focused canids.

BACKGROUND: Morphological convergence is a fundamental aspect of evolution, allowing for inference of the biology and ecology of extinct species by comparison with the form and function of living species as analogues. The thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), the iconic recently extinct marsupial, is considered a classic example of convergent evolution with the distantly related placental wolf or dog, though almost nothing is actually known regarding its ecology. This lack of data leads to questions regarding the degree of convergence with, and the similarity of, the functional ecology of the t

Keep your interoceptive streams under control: An active inference perspective on anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder primarily characterized by "restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health" (DSM-5, n.d.). Here, we propose a novel interpretation of food restriction of AN, which elaborates on recent accounts of the brain as a predictive machine, continuously inferring and controling incoming signals, including bodily signals - i.e., interoceptive (active) inference. In this perspective, the extreme eating restrictions characterizing AN ma
