Diagnosis of Schmallenberg virus infection in malformed lambs and calves and first indications for virus clearance in the fetus.

Since mid-December 2011, samples from malformed lambs and calves are sent to CODA-CERVA in Belgium for diagnosis of Schmallenberg virus (SBV … tion by rRT-PCR, a comparative analysis between different organs and tissues (cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, spinal cord, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, meconium) originating from respectively 90 and 81 malformed lambs and calves was undertaken. Furthermore, thoracic fluids of respectively 55 malformed lambs and calves were examined by a virus neutralizatio …

Functional improvement of focal cerebral ischemia injury by subdural transplantation of induced pluripotent stem cells with fibrin glue.

Ischemic stroke is the leading cause of disability in the world. Cell transplantation has emerged in various neurological diseases as a potential therapeutic approach in the postacute stroke phase. Recently, inducible pluripotent stem (iPS) cells showed potential for multilineage differentiation and provide a resource for stem cell-based therapies. However, whether iPS transplantation could improve the function of stroke-like model is still an open question. The aim of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effects of subdural transplantation of iPS mixed with fibrin glue (iPS-FG) on cer

A novel N-terminal isoform of the neuron-specific K-Cl cotransporter KCC2.

The neuronal K-Cl cotransporter KCC2 maintains the low intracellular chloride concentration required for the hyperpolarizing actions of inhi … assays indicated that KCC2a contributes 20-50% of total KCC2 mRNA expression in the neonatal mouse brain stem and spinal cord. In contrast to the marked increase in KCC2b mRNA levels in the cortex during postnatal development, the overall expression of KCC2a remains relatively constant and makes up only 5-10% of total KCC2 mRNA in the mature cortex. A rubid …

[Cavernous haemangiomas: hearing and vestibular inaugural symptoms].

INTRODUCTION: Cavernous haemangiomas (cavernomas)(CH) are relatively rare (2% of cranial tumoral pathology) vascular malformations mostly observed in the central nervous system. Their most common topographical site in brain stem is midline in the pons, for which clinical course may mimic symptoms of peripheral origin (sudden deafness, fluctuating hearing loss, Meniere-like vertigo). AIM: To establish the correlation between the clinical manifestations of hearing and balance disturbance and the anatomical site within the pons of cavernous haemangiomas, and to describe their clinical features, …

Enterovirus 71: the virus, its infections and outbreaks.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) was first recognized in 1974. Since then it has been implicated in 13 small and large outbreaks world-wide. Large outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), mostly benign, occurred in Japan in 1973 and 1978. Four outbreaks with brain stem encephalitis and significant numbers of deaths occurred in Bulgaria and Hungary in the late 1970's and in Malaysia and Taiwan in 1997 and 1998 respectively. During the latter two epidemics, pulmonary edema and hemorrhage often leading to quick deaths in children aged from 0.5 to 3 years old was first recognized. In Taiwan 78 death…

Direct surgery of basilar trunk and vertebrobasilar junction aneurysms via the combined transpetrosal approach.

Surgical access to aneurysms of the basilar trunk and vertebrobasilar junction is hampered by their direct proximity of these lesions to highly vulnerable neural structures like the brain stem and cranial nerves, as well by the bony structure of the petrous bone blocking the direct surgical approach to these aneurysms. Only recently lateral approaches directed through parts of the petrous bone have been reported for surgery of basilar trunk and vertebrobasilar junction aneurysms like the anterior transpetrosal, the retrolabyrinthine transsigmoid, as well as the combined supra-infratentorial po…

[Isolated angiitis of the central nervous system. Clinical and neuropathological study of 2 cases].

Isolated angiitis of the central nervous system (IAC) is an idiopatic, recurrent vasculitis confined to the CNS involving small blood vessel … n that evolved for 4 years with encephalic ischemic lesions distributed and confined throughout the brain stem and cerebellum, temporary remissions occurred and the patient required high-dose steroids and Cyclophosphamide to improve. Conventional and MRI angiographies only suggested the diagnosis that was confirmed at autopsy. The patient died after a massiv …

Arterial hypertension and neurovascular compression at the ventrolateral medulla. A comparative microanatomical and pathological study.

Intraoperative observations and animal experiments suggest that neurovascular compression at the left ventrolateral medulla is a possible etiological factor in essential hypertension. In pursuing this hypothesis, the authors examined the neurovascular relations in the posterior cranial fossa of 24 patients with essential hypertension, of 10 with renal hypertension, and of 21 normotensive control patients. Artificial perfusion of the vessels and microsurgical investigations during autopsy identified the vascular relations at the brain stem and at the root entry zone of the caudal cranial nerves…

Intraoperative monitoring of facial and cochlear nerves during acoustic neuroma surgery.

The likelihood of successful preservation of facial and cochlear nerve function during acoustic neuroma surgery has been improved by the adv … tion. The ability to elicit EMG responses from low amplitude stimulation of the facial nerve at the brain stem after tumor removal is a reasonable predictor of postoperative facial function. Cochlear nerve function is assessed by recording the ABR from ear canal and scalp electrodes or the CNAP with an electrode placed directly on the nerve at the brain stem …

Thyroid hormone dependency of the developing dorsal raphe nucleus but not the superior cervical ganglion. Evidence from intraocular grafting experiments.

Immature superior cervical ganglia and brain stem pieces containing 5-hydroxytryptamine neurons of the dorsal raphe nucleus were grafted to the anterior eye chamber of intact and thyroidectomized recipients. The grafts were left in the eye to mature for 4-6 weeks and were measured through the translucent cornea repeatedly to follow survival and growth. Monoaminergic nerve fibre outgrowth from the grafts onto the host irides was evaluated with Falck-Hillarp monoamine histochemistry on iris whole mounts. Body weight and plasma concentrations of thyroid-stimulating hormone monitored the thyroid s…

[An autopsy case of Parkinson's disease associated clinically with dementia terminating in akinetic mutism and pathologically with multiple Lewy's Bodies in the cerebral cortex].

An autopsy case of a 50 year-old male with Parkinson's disease associated with multiple Lewy bodies in the cerebral cortex was reported. His clinical symptoms began at the age of 26 with the speech and actions indicative of a persecution complex accompanied by irritability and were followed by progressive dementia from the age of 37 and Parkinsonism since the age of 41. He was in a state of akinetic mutism thereafter till his death at the age of 50. Autopsy disclosed in addition to the typical findings of Parkinson's disease in the brain stem multiple intracytoplasmic Lewy bodies in medium-siz…

Choroid plexus organoids mimic amyloid uptake at the blood-cerebrospinal fluid-barrier.

The choroid plexus (ChP) is a specialised tissue of the central nervous system that produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), maintains cerebral homeostasis and forms the blood-CSF barrier (B-CSF-B), a key interface that regulates the exchange of substances between the blood and the brain. Despite its physiological importance, the involvement of the ChP in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), remains poorly understood. This is largely due to the reliance on murine models and the limited availability of human brain tissue. Recent advances in human stem-cell derived ChP organoi

Deep spatial profiling of human COVID-19 brains reveals neuroinflammation with distinct microanatomical microglia-T-cell interactions.

COVID-19 can cause severe neurological symptoms, but the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear. Here, we interrogated the brain stems and olfactory bulbs in postmortem patients who had COVID-19 using imaging mass cytometry to understand the local immune response at a spatially resolved, high-dimensional, single-cell level and compared their immune map to non-COVID respiratory failure, multiple sclerosis, and control patients. We observed substantial immune activation in the central nervous system with pronounced neuropathology (astrocytosis, axonal damage, and blood-brain-barrie…

Modeling Brain Pathology of Niemann-Pick Disease Type C Using Patient-Derived Neurons.

BACKGROUND: Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a rare autosomal-recessive lysosomal storage disease that is also associated with progressive neurodegeneration. NPC shares many pathological features with Alzheimer's disease, including neurofibrillary tangles, axonal spheroids, β-amyloid deposition, and dystrophic neurites. Here, we examined if these pathological features could be detected in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons from NPC patients. METHODS: Brain tissues from 8 NPC patients and 5 controls were analyzed for histopathological and biochemical markers of pathology.

Brain tissue analysis of impacts to American football helmets.

Concussion in American football is a prevalent concern. Research has been conducted examining frequencies, location, and thresholds for conc … de of the head resulted in higher magnitudes of strain in the grey and white matter, as well as the brain stem. Finally, commonly worn American football helmets were used in this research and significant risk of injury was incurred for all impacts. These results suggest that improvements in American football helmets are warranted, in particular for impacts t …

Chronic inflammation and impaired development of the preterm brain.

The preterm newborn is at significant risk of neural injury and impaired neurodevelopment. Infants with mild or no evidence of injury may also be at risk of altered brain development, with evidence impaired cell maturation. The underlying causes are multifactorial and include exposure of both the fetus and newborn to hypoxia-ischemia, inflammation (chorioamnionitis) and infection, adverse maternal lifestyle choices (smoking, drug and alcohol use, diet) and obesity, as well as the significant demand that adaptation to post-natal life places on immature organs. Further, many fetuses and infants
