Diversity, Host Attachment Preferences and Role of Tick Rhipicephalus microplus in the Transmission of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp. in Cattle From Southern Benin.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks, particularly Rhipicephalus microplus, are major blood-sucking ectoparasites of livestock, causing considerable economic losses both through their direct pathogenic effects and their role as vectors of infectious agents. However, tick diversity, host association and pathogen carriage remain insufficiently documented in Southern Benin. This study investigated tick species composition, anatomical attachment preferences, host breed associations and the molecular detection of selected bacterial pathogens in six municipalities of Southern Benin. METHODS: Ticks were collected fr

Comparative analysis of Feedlot and Free-range cattle management on Botswana beef quality: a study of sustainability, post-mortem examination, and SWOT analysis.

African agriculture faces triple threats of climate change, population growth and inequality, necessitating sustainability research in agriculture that comprehensively examines social, economic, environmental, and socio-political trade-offs. To examine sustainable beef production in Botswana, this study used a mixed-method approach to explore Feedlot and Free-range cattle management systems. First, competing but overlapping factors of environmental, economic, and social sustainability in beef production were identified from literature review, and a conceptual framework for sustainability was u

The association of lung consolidation in beef × dairy cattle at weaning with feedlot growth performance, carcass characteristics, liver health, and liver microbiome diversity.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the costliest disease in the cattle industry and often compromises the immune system. The objective of this observational cohort study was to evaluate the impact of lung consolidation (LC) diagnosed at weaning (61 plus/minus 14 days of age) on feedlot growth performance, carcass characteristics, and liver health and microbiome in beef × dairy cattle. At 4 d post-weaning, LC was assessed by thoracic ultrasonography. The cattle (n = 139) either had ≥ 1 cm2 LC in at least one lung lobe and were BRD positive (35 calves; BRD) or did not (< 1 cm2) and were negativ

Over-expression and increased copy numbers of a cytochrome P450 and two UDP-glucuronosyltransferase genes in macrocyclic lactone resistant Psoroptes ovis of cattle.

Psoroptes ovis is a mite species that feeds on sheep, cattle, other ungulates, rabbits, and horses, which can develop into a severe exudative dermatitis known as psoroptic mange. The macrocyclic lactone (ML) family of acaricides are commonly used to control psoroptic mange. However, certain strains of cattle and sheep mites have developed resistance against MLs, which has led to reduced treatment efficacy and even treatment failure. Here we investigated the genetic basis of ML resistance in P. ovis mites collected from cattle across Belgium. We compared gene expression between susceptible and

Exposure to Arboviruses in Cattle: Seroprevalence of Rift Valley Fever, Bluetongue, and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Viruses and Risk Factors in Baringo County, Kenya.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) causes disease outbreaks in livestock and humans; however, its inter-epidemic circulation is poorly understood, similar to other arboviruses affecting cattle such as bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). Serum samples were collected in Baringo County, Kenya from 400 cattle, accompanied by a risk factor questionnaire. Serological tests were then conducted to determine the exposure of cattle to RVFV, BTV, and EHDV. RVFV, BTV, and EHDV IgG seroprevalence rates were 15.5%, 91.5%, and 91%, respectively. Seropositivity for RVFV, BTV, an

Single-cell transcriptome analysis and in vitro differentiation of testicular cells reveal novel insights into male sterility of the interspecific hybrid cattle-yak.

BACKGROUND: Interspecific hybridization plays vital roles in enriching animal diversity, while male hybrid sterility (MHS) of the offspring commonly suffered from spermatogenic arrest constitutes the postzygotic reproductive isolation. Cattle-yak, the hybrid offspring of cattle (Bos taurus) and yak (Bos grunniens) can serve as an ideal MHS animal model. Although meiotic arrest was found to contribute to MHS of cattle-yak, yet the cellular characteristics and developmental potentials of male germline cell in pubertal cattle-yak remain to be systematically investigated. RESULTS: Single-cell RNA

Correlation between the Biodistribution of Bovine Leukemia Virus in the Organs and the Proviral Load in the Peripheral Blood during Early Stages of Experimentally Infected Cattle.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the etiological agent of enzootic bovine leukosis. However, the propagation and distribution of BLV after primary infection still need to be fully elucidated. Here, we experimentally infected seven cattle with BLV and analyzed the BLV proviral load (PVL) in the blood and various organs. BLV was first detected in the blood of the cattle after one week, and the blood PVL increased for three weeks after infection. The PVL was maintained at a high level in five cattle, while it decreased to a low or medium level in two cattle. BLV was distributed in various organs, s

Toll-like Receptor 2 is Involved in Calcium Influx and Acrosome Reaction to Facilitate Sperm Penetration to Oocytes During in vitro Fertilization in Cattle.

Cumulus cells of ovulated cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) express Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), pathogen recognition receptors, to recognize and react to sperm signals during fertilization. Sperm also express TLR2, but its contribution to the sperm-oocytes crosstalk is still unclear. Here, we adapted the in vitro fertilization (IVF) model to characterize the potential relevance of sperm TLR2 in sperm-oocytes interactions during fertilization in bovine. The IVF results showed that the ligation of sperm TLR2 with its specific antagonist/agonist resulted in down/up-regulation of the cleavage and b

Epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens of cattle and tick control practices among mixed farming and pastoral communities in Gairo and Monduli districts, Tanzania.

Tick-borne diseases including East Coast fever, anaplasmosis and babesiosis constitute a major constraint to improving livestock production worldwide, including Tanzania. Determination of the prevalence and factors associated with the occurrence of pathogens in cattle is important for informed decision making on the control and prevention of these diseases. However, little is known about the epidemiology of these pathogens in cattle in some regions of Tanzania. Therefore, this study aimed at establishing the prevalence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis and Theileria parva

Could cattle dung burning have contributed to the epidemic of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis in India? Results of an experimental aero-mycological study.

BACKGROUND: Several hypotheses have been proposed for explaining the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated mucormycosis in India, including the burning of cattle dung cakes, though no study has yet been conducted to support this claim. METHODS: We conducted an aero-mycological study to evaluate whether Mucorales in the air increased during or after burning cattle dung cakes. We further compared the growth of Mucorales in the indoor air samples from houses with and without cattle. We also cultured fresh and dried cattle dung and soil samples for Mucorales. RESULTS: We not
