DNA of TT virus (TTV), a novel human circovirus, was tested for in 116 mother-infant pairs who had participated in the adult T-cell leukemia prevention program (APP) in Nagasaki, Japan, and refrained from breast-feeding. By polymerase chain reaction with Okamoto's seminested primers, 36 of the 115 (31%) mothers were positive. At the age of 6-8 months, 7 of 29 (24%) and 6 of 72 (8%) infants born to infected and uninfected mothers were positive, respectively (P = 0.047; RR, 2.90). Maternal TTV DNA load did not correlate with infantile infections. Since 99 of 100 (99%) cord blood samples were neg

The use of enzyme immunoassay to detect St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viral antigen in vector mosquitoes enhances the effectiveness of surveillance because infected mosquitoes can be identified more rapidly than with conventional virus isolation systems and because it is a simple and accessible procedure. Infectivity among mosquitoes experimentally infected with SLE virus was lost within 24 h after the mosquitoes were stored at 27 degrees C and 80% relative humidity; however, viral antigen remained stable under these conditions and could be detected by enzyme immunoassay 2 weeks later. Desiccat

Salmonella enterica (S. enterica) is an important pathogen responsible for bloodstream infections, particularly in developing nations. These infections often lead to bacteremia, with a few patients developing cardiac complications in high-risk populations. Myocarditis, a common manifestation, presents with fever, chest pain, and dyspnea and can lead to severe complications, such as cardiogenic shock. Salmonella endocarditis, although rare, predominantly affects the mitral valve and leads to critical complications, including valve perforation and dehiscence, with a high mortality rate. Patients

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of pulmonary infections and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in infants and children under the age of 2 years. Although RSV infection most commonly affects the respiratory system, it has increasingly been linked to cardiovascular manifestations such as conduction abnormalities. Such complications are exceedingly rare in neonates, especially in the absence of clinical signs of infection. Herein, we present the case of a 3-day-old full-term neonate who presented to the emergency department owing to maternal concern of yel

Viruses in wastewater effluent pose significant public health risks, and achieving high log reduction values is critical for wastewater reuse applications. The influence of ionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (BAC) in wastewater on virus removal and infectivity after microfiltration (200 nm cutoff) was investigated. Microfiltration log rejection values (LRVs) for infective human adenovirus (ADV, nonenveloped, 90-nm diameter) and mouse hepatitis virus (MHV, enveloped, 80- to 120-nm diameter) increased when surfactants were present in wastewa

The livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) strains are prevalent in the poultry farming environment and are a common component of the bacterial microbiota on the skin and mucous membranes of healthy animals. The origin and spread of LA-MRSA are attributed to the use of antibiotics in animals, and close contact between people and different animal species increases the risk of animal exposure to humans. The epidemiology of LA-MRSA in poultry significantly changed when ST398 and ST9 were found in food-producing animals. The significance of LA-MRSA and zoonotic

BACKGROUND: A novel virus breakout in December 2019, with diverse clinical manifestations, initially identified as infecting the respiratory system, has spread rapidly around the world, with adverse effects which have caused acute myocardial injury and chronic damage to the cardiovascular system in some individuals.
AIM: To present a clinical case with the manifestation of COVID-19 suspected to be either a mild case of either myocarditis or pericarditis. This case highlights a relatively atypical presentation of COVID-19 and the value of a coordinated approach to the unexpected sequences of p

The Omicron variant is sweeping the world, which displays striking immune escape potential through mutations at key antigenic sites on the spike protein, making broad-spectrum SARS-CoV-2 prevention or therapeutical strategies urgently needed. Previously, we have reported a hACE2-targeting neutralizing antibody 3E8, which could efficiently block both prototype SARS-CoV-2 and Delta variant infections in prophylactic mouse models, having the potential of broad-spectrum to prevent SARS-CoV-2. However, preparation of monoclonal neutralizing antibodies is severely limited by the time-consuming proce

Strongyloides venezuelensis has been used in different experimental studies, such as those aimed at the evaluation of diagnostic techniques for human strongyloidiasis, mainly the molecular diagnosis. In this study, three regions (genus, 18S and 28S targets) of Strongyloides ribosomal DNA were evaluated for the molecular diagnosis of experimental strongyloidiasis. Rats were infected subcutaneously with 400 or 4000 S. venezuelensis infective larvae (400iL3 and 4000iL3), and kept for 35 days. Fecal samples were collected daily to count eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and to perform the polymerase ch

Since December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in devastating consequences worldwide and infected more than 350,000 individuals and killed more than 16,000 people. SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the coronavirus family to affect humans. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever (88%), cough (68%), vomiting (5%) and diarrhoea (3.7%), and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is thought to occur from human to human via respiratory secretions released by the infected individuals when coughing and sneezing. COVID-19 ca

Despite previous detection of Chlamydia pecorum in sporadic ovine abortions, published descriptions of naturally occurring infections with fetoplacental lesions are lacking. This report provides the first descriptions of severe necrosuppurative chorionitis with vasculitis, and fetal pyelonephritis and enteritis in late-term abortions of maiden ewes. Chlamydial infection was detected using a Chlamydia genus-specific qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) on tissue extracts from 3 fetuses. C. pecorum was identified using a targeted qPCR assay, which also determined infectious load within

The neurotropic pathogen Toxoplasma gondii infects about one-third of the human population. Both acute and chronic (latent or life-long) forms of toxoplasmosis are associated with specific neurologic and neuropsychiatric symptoms. In the present study, swiss albino mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with 15-20 tissue cysts of the ME-49 strain of Toxoplasma gondii. The brain samples were collected on the days 10, 20, and 30 for determining the histopathological scores and the number of cysts. Furthermore, a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was conducted to find out

How much drug-resistant infections in livestock contribute to disease in humans is controversial. While zoonoses are a prominent cause of emerging infections, and the profligate use of antibiotics as growth promoters is expected to lead to the spread of resistance, this resistance could remain concentrated in animal pathogens and only rarely spill over into humans. A recent paper compares genomes of Escherichia coli isolates from human bloodstream infections in England, focused on the Cambridge area, with isolates collected from farms and the food chain in the east of the country, seeking evid

INTRODUCTION: More than 1200 different types of microbes were found in the human mouth, only some of these microorganisms were associated with intracranial bacterial infection. However, there are limited data available about the Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus (P alactolyticus) or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) intracranial infections oral origin.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we reported a rarely case with P alactolyticus and MTB coinfection in central nervous after dental extraction. The 44-year-old man presented with progressive headache over the last 2 weeks and a sustained fever >39°C, with a

Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis) may cause sepsis and meningitis. N. meningitidis with a mutated lpxL1 gene has five, instead of six, acyl chains in the lipid A moiety. Compared with patients infected with the wild type (wt) meningococcus, patients infected with the lpxL1 mutant have a mild meningococcal disease with less systemic inflammation and less coagulopathy. Circulating tissue factor (TF), the main initiator of coagulation, has a central role in the development of coagulation disturbances during sepsis. To study how TF was influenced by the lpxL1 mutant, human primary monocytes

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and many other viruses, including HIV, initiate infection of host cells by binding to glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains of cell surface proteoglycans. Although GAG mimetics, such as sulfated oligo- and polysaccharides, exhibit potent antiviral activities in cultured cells, the prophylactic application of these inhibitors as vaginal microbicides failed to protect women upon their exposure to HIV. A possible explanation for this failure is that sulfated oligo- and polysaccharides exhibit no typical virucidal activity, as their interaction with viral particles is largely e

Finegoldia magna is an anaerobic Gram positive coccus, previously classified as Peptostreoptococcus magnus. It is normal flora of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract, and can be isolated from skin and the oral cavity and is often regarded as a contaminant in cultures. As the most frequently isolated anaerobic coccus, it is implicated in a range of mono- and polymicrobial infections, including skin and skin structure, bone and joint (native and prosthetic joints), infective endocarditis (native and prosthetic valves), necrotizing pneumonia, mediastinitis and meningitis. Recently, whole

CD8 T cells are recognized key players in control of persistent virus infections, but increasing evidence suggests that assistance from other immune mediators is also needed. Here, we investigated whether specific antibody responses contribute to control of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), a prototypic mouse model of systemic persistent infection. Mice expressing transgenic B cell receptors of LCMV-unrelated specificity, and mice unable to produce soluble immunoglobulin M (IgM) exhibited protracted viremia or failed to resolve LCMV. Virus control depended on immunoglobulin class swit

Bacillus anthracis elaborates a poly-gamma-d-glutamic acid capsule that protects bacilli from phagocytic killing during infection. The enzyme CapD generates amide bonds with peptidoglycan cross-bridges to anchor capsular material within the cell wall envelope of B. anthracis. The capsular biosynthetic pathway is essential for virulence during anthrax infections and can be targeted for anti-infective inhibition with small molecules. Here, we present the crystal structures of the gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase CapD with and without alpha-l-Glu-l-Glu dipeptide, a non-hydrolyzable analog of poly-gam
