Yoga for Migraine Prevention: An Ancient Practice with Evidence for Current Use.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The objective of this study is to review the recent literature on yoga for migraine prevention either as adjuvant or standalone therapy. Yoga is one of the most widely used complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) therapies; clinicians should be familiar with yoga practice so that they can best advise interested patients. It is also important to assess study design and types of yoga offered. Using PubMed and Litmaps, research published from 2018 to 2023 addressing yoga and migraine was assessed. RECENT FINDINGS: Two systematic reviews and six studies have recently been

Gene therapy for deafness: are we there now?

Approximately half a billion people—5% of the world’s population—suffer from disabling hearing impairment (HI) according to the WHO (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/deafness/en/). HI commonly hampers speech acquisition, leads to social isolation and increases risk for depression and cognitive decline. One to two per thousand children are born with disabling HI and over 50% of sensorineural HI is caused by defects in individual genes (deafness genes) of which roughly 150 have been identified so far (http://hereditaryhearingloss.org/). In case of profound hearing impairment or deafness, co

Management of sleep disorders among children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders: A practical guide for clinicians.

There is a complex relationship between sleep disorders and childhood neurodevelopmental, emotional, behavioral and intellectual disorders (NDEBID). NDEBID include several conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning (intellectual) disorders. Up to 75% of children and young people (CYP) with NDEBID are known to experience different types of insomnia, compared to 3% to 36% in normally developing population. Sleep disorders affect 15% to 19% of adolescents with no disability, in comparison with 26% to 36% among CYP w

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: An Audit of the Ultrasound Screening Programme.

Aims Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is an important cause of disability in children and young adults. Early diagnosis and treatment can help avoid more invasive interventions and long-term morbidity. This study examines the ultrasound screening programme conducted in University Hospital Waterford (UHW), and the outcomes for infants with DDH in the Southeast of Ireland. Methods We conducted an audit of all the DDH screening ultrasounds performed in UHW in the year 2020, a total of 992 infants. Data included referral and ultrasound times, screening results, interventions, and outcomes.

Two novel pathogenic variants in MED13L: one familial and one isolated case.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variants involving the MED13L gene can lead to an autosomal dominant syndrome characterised by intellectual disability/developmental delay and facial dysmorphism. METHODS: We investigated two cases (one familial and one isolated) of intellectual disability with speech delay and dysmorphic facial features by whole-exome sequencing analyses. Further, we performed a literature review about clinical and molecular aspects of MED13L gene and syndrome. RESULTS: Two MED13L variants have been identified [MED13L(NM_015335.5):c.4417C>T and MED13L(NM_015335.5):c.2318delC] and were cl

Processing speed and timed academic skills in children with learning problems.

Information processing speed is commonly measured in intelligence and neuropsychological testing, and the scores from speed measures are considered in diagnostic and management recommendations for students with academic learning problems. However, this score usage often depends on assumptions about strong relationships between cognitive speed and the ability to perform actual academic tasks under time pressure. The primary purpose of the present study was to test the strength of these relationships empirically. In the present study, children with prior learning disability diagnoses (146 girls

Applying the ICF-CY in visually impaired rehabilitation: a case report in China.

The model provided by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is used to describe, classify and measure function in both health care practice and research. ICF for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) has not been applied to the rehabilitation of patients with visual impairment. The purpose of this case report is to describe the process of evaluation and treatment of low vision patients based on ICF-CY models. The patient was a 9-year-old girl. The diagnosis included retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (OU), secondary glaucoma after iridectomy (OD), keratoleukoma (OD),

A Cognitive Dimensional Approach to Understanding Shared and Unique Contributions to Reading, Math, and Attention Skills.

Disorders of reading, math, and attention frequently co-occur in children. However, it is not yet clear which cognitive factors contribute to comorbidities among multiple disorders and which uniquely relate to one, especially because they have rarely been studied as a triad. Thus, the present study considers how reading, math, and attention relate to phonological awareness, numerosity, working memory, and processing speed, all implicated as either unique or shared correlates of these disorders. In response to findings that the attributes of all three disorders exist on a continuum rather than

A de novo nonsense mutation in ASXL3 shared by siblings with Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome.

Two sisters (ages 16 yr and 15 yr) have been followed by our clinical genetics team for several years. Both girls have severe intellectual disability, hypotonia, seizures, and distinctive craniofacial features. The parents are healthy and have no other children. Oligo array, fragile X testing, and numerous single-gene tests were negative. All four family members underwent research exome sequencing, which revealed a heterozygous nonsense mutation in ASXL3 (p.R1036X) that segregated with disease. Exome data and independent Sanger sequencing confirmed that the variant is de novo, suggesting possi

Clinical delineation of a patient with trisomy 12q23q24.

Trisomies of 12q23q24 have been described rarely in literature. Only a few case-reports have been published so far almost exclusively reporting on neonates or young infants. We present a 16-year-old patient with a trisomy of 12q23.3q24.3. Full phenotypic evaluation at this age comprised: severe growth retardation, developmental delay, intellectual disability and characteristic facial dysmorphisms. Initially, in the proband an insertion was cytogenetically mapped at chromosome 16: der(16)dir ins(16; 12)(q12.1; q24.11q24.31). The mother appeared carrier of a balanced insertion. Neuroanatomy in adolescents and young adults with 22q11 deletion syndrome: comparison to an IQ-matched group.

22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a common genetic condition associated with learning disability and high risk for psychiatric illness, in particular schizophrenia. Previous neuroimaging studies in children and adults with 22q11DS have uncovered a number of abnormalities, but have not differentiated between features relating to cognitive impairment and features relating to risk for schizophrenia. This structural MRI study compares adolescents with 22q11DS (n=14) to adolescents with idiopathic learning disability (n=13) and to typically-developing controls (n=14). Voxel-based morphometry and

A prospective series of musculoskeletal system rehabilitation of arthropathic joints in young male hemophilic patients.

The study aims to evaluate prospective results of physical therapy interventions and rehabilitation of arthropathic joints in young male hemophilic patients. Given that the effectiveness of the therapy would be higher if therapy is provided at early ages, a series of males aged 18 years or younger were included in the study. The study is a descriptive case series of 31 hemophilic children who consecutively referred to the physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic from the pediatric hematology clinic of the same hospital over a period of 12 months. After getting their oral informed consent, al

Pediatric physical functioning reference curves.

We developed normative profiles of physical functioning (mobility and self-care) in infancy up through 14 years of age with an expanded version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory. Mobility and self-care reference curves were based on the original Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory standardization data (n = 412) and data from an additional cross-sectional, convenience sample (n = 373) via web-based survey, telephone or in-person interviews of parents. This new sample, which included children up through 14 years-of-age, was stratified for race, age, and sex, but was pr

Complexities in Identifying and Defining Mathematics Learning Disability in the Primary School-Age Years.

This paper is a descriptive report of findings from a prospective longitudinal study of math disability (MD). The study was designed to address the incidence of MD during primary school, the utility of different MD definitions, and evidence of MD subtypes. The results illustrate the dynamic properties of psychometrically derived definitions of MD. Different groups of children meet criteria for MD depending on which measure(s) are used for identification. Over time, a given individual may not continue to meet MD criteria, even when using the same assessments. Thus, the findings lead to cautions

Clinical manifestations, disability and use of folk medicine in dracunculus infection in Nigeria.

A cross-sectional survey of households was carried out in a dracunculiasis endemic village in Oyo state Nigeria. Data were collected on history of dracunculiasis, occupational and domestic sources of drinking water, clinical manifestations, disability, use of folk medicine, and incorporation of previous dracunculiasis control programmes. The findings indicated that dracunculiasis patients were usually unaware of their infection 3-5 days before the appearance of a bleb; that religious affiliation appeared to be positively related to increasing morbidity; and that ulcers were predominantly in th

Community views of neurodiversity, models of disability and autism intervention: Mixed methods reveal shared goals and key tensions.

Controversies regarding the neurodiversity movement may be exacerbated by confusion over its meaning. For example, some suggest neurodiversity entails acceptance of the social model, whereas others describe it as more nuanced. We aimed to help resolve conflicting viewpoints by inviting insights from 504 autistic and autism community members (278 autistic, 226 non-autistic), including 100 researchers (41 autistic), 122 professionals (35 autistic) and 162 parents/caregivers (53 autistic). They rated the neurodiversity movement, social model, medical model and intervention goals, and answered ope
