Albendazole and Mebendazole as Anti-Parasitic and Anti-Cancer Agents: an Update.

The use of albendazole and mebendazole, i.e., benzimidazole broad-spectrum anthelmintics, in treatment of parasitic infections, as well as cancers, is briefly reviewed. These drugs are known to block the microtubule systems of parasites and mammalian cells leading to inhibition of glucose uptake and transport and finally cell death. Eventually they exhibit ovicidal, larvicidal, and vermicidal effects on parasites, and tumoricidal effects on hosts. Albendazole and mebendazole are most frequently prescribed for treatment of intestinal nematode infections (ascariasis, hookworm infections, trichur

Efficacy and Safety Curcuma zadoaria L. to Inactivate the Hydatid Cyst Protoscoleces.

BACKGROUND: The present work aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of Curcuma zadoaria essential oil and to investigate its efficacy and safety against hydatid cyst protoscoleces. METHODS: Collected protoscoleces from liver fertile hydatid cysts of infected sheep were exposed to different concentrations of the essential oil (75, 150, 300 μl/mL) for 5-30 min in vitro and ex vivo. Then, by using the eosin exclusion assay, the viability of protoscoleces was studied. In the next step, 24 male NMRI mice were examined to assess the toxicity of C. zadoaria essential oil by measuring the biochem

The High Potential of Ozone Gas to Inactivate Echinococcus granulosus Protoscoleces During Hydatid Cyst Surgery.

BACKGROUND: In medicine, ozone therapy is effectively used in a broad spectrum of diseases. Reviews have shown that ozone gas demonstrates potent antimicrobial effects against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, such as oral bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasite even in resistant strains. The present investigation was designed to assess the protoscolicidal effects of ozone gas on hydatid cysts protoscoleces in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Hydatid cyst protoscoleces were acquired from sheep livers that were slaughtered at Kerman slaughterhouse, Iran. The viability of protoscoleces was a

Primary Mediastinal Hydatid Cyst Causing Diaphragmatic Palsy.

Hydatid cystic disease is a significant clinical problem in endemic countries. Hydatid cysts are most commonly located in the liver and lungs. Primary mediastinal hydatid cyst is a rare clinical entity. The diagnosis must be considered in a patient with a mediastinal mass, particularly in endemic regions. Mediastinal hydatid cysts causing paralysis of phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerves have been rarely reported. We describe a rare case of primary mediastinal hydatid cyst associated with diaphragmatic palsy caused by compression of the left phrenic nerve, which was successfully treated with

Surgically confirmed cases of cystic echinococcosis from Baluchistan Province, Pakistan for the years 2011-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus tapeworms. It has a worldwide geographic distribution and can threaten the livestock industry and human health in endemic areas, including Pakistan. CE prevalence is high in Pakistan due to lack of local knowledge about disease transmission and a lack of control measures. The Pakistan province of Baluchistan shares a border with Iran and Afghanistan and is largely agricultural. However, little is known about E. granulosus transmission in this region. METHODS: Informat

Liver metastasis and local recurrence of meningeal hemangiopericytoma: a case report.

This report describes the clinical features, diagnostic and treatment modalities of a 62-year-old female patient with liver metastasis and local recurrence of meningeal hemangiopericytoma (HPC), who presented with the clinical manifestations of memory deterioration, visual reduction and abdominal mass for one month. Skull and abdominal computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 18FFluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET)-CT were used for pre-surgery identification. Lesions without FDG uptake and less tumoral viability was observed through FDG-PET-CT, which

Disseminated Hydatid Disease in a Child Involving Multiple Organ Systems: A Case Report.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation by Echinococcus granulosus, which involves the liver and lungs primarily. The authors report a case of disseminated hydatid disease involving multiple organs simultaneously in a 7-year-old child from Kabul, Afghanistan. The patient under examination had been having a complaint of cough and low-grade fever for the last one year. Computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography (USG) demonstrated cystic lesions in his liver, lungs, spleen, and suprarenal region. The literature review showed that it was very rare for hydatid disease to involve multiple organ

Closed Cyst Resection for Liver Hydatid Disease: a New Standard.

BACKGROUND: Although radical resections are recommended for the surgical management of liver hydatid disease (LHD), whether closed (CCR) or opened (OCR) cyst resections should be performed remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative and long-term outcomes of CCR and OCR for primary and recurrent LHD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical charts of patients who underwent surgery at a single centre were retrospectively reviewed and compared with respect to major postoperative complications and recurrence rates. RESULTS: Seventy-nine CCRs and 37 OCRs were included. The majo

Case 275: Multiple Hepatic Hydatid Cysts.

HistoryA 61-year-old woman presented to the cardiology service with sinus tachycardia. As part of her work-up, she underwent routine echocardiography that showed a normal heart but incidentally revealed multiple lesions in the liver. An outpatient CT scan was performed to characterize the liver lesions. The patient had emigrated to Canada from the Middle East several years earlier and had no medical history of note; in particular, there was no history of cancer or predisposing factors for chronic liver disease. The patient's clinical examination findings; laboratory test results, including com

Traumatic rupture of a hydatid cyst of the liver presenting with skin lesions.

The hydatid cyst is the evolution of a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and is an endemic disease in Turkey. The hydatid cysts of the liver can give origin to several complications and the rupture is one of them. Rupture can occur spontaneously or as a result of external trauma. The presentation with skin lesions is very rare. We present a 20-year-old male patient who presented himself after a car accident, and was diagnosed with a rupture of traumatic hydatid cysts due to hives rash. In the operation, a scolicidal gent was administered to the cyst, the cyst wall was parti

Ventricular Tachycardia and the Cystic Heart: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts are caused by Echinococcus granulosus infection, and hydatidosis is recognized as a re-emerging zoonotic disease globally. While the liver is the most commonly affected organ, other organs can also be affected, including the heart. Because of the low sensitivity and specificity of serologic diagnostic tests, ultrasound and echocardiography are increasingly used to make the diagnosis of cardiac hydatid cyst. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a cardiac hydatid cyst, detected by point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), in a 79-year-old woman who presented with shortness of br

Case Report: Sudden death related to unrecognized cardiac hydatid cyst.

Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is a common parasitic human infestation found in sheep-breeding areas. It is caused by the larvae stage of Echinococcus granulosus, and cysts develop mostly in the lungs and the liver. Cardiac involvement is unusual and silent until acute complications or a fatal outcome occurs. Herein, we report an autopsy case of a young healthy adult who died suddenly. The autopsy revealed an external bulging on the right heart ventricle outlet with a fluid-filled cystic cavity discovered on sectioning. Dissection of other organs did not reveal other cyst locat
