Cognitive Function and Heart Failure: The Role of the Adrenergic System.

BACKGROUND: Heart Failure (HF) and cognitive impairment (CI) represent two high incident diseases worldwide, with extremely elevated mortality and morbidity rates. Their prevalence is expected to further increase in the next years due to the aging population, thus they pose enormous clinical, social and economic challenges. Sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity is known to play a pivotal role in HF pathophysiology and progression. In fact, increased cardiac and circulating catecholamine levels are responsible for several molecular and structural abnormalities with detrimental effects on the

[Cerebral microbleeds in cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases with cognitive impairment].

AIM: To study a role of cerebral microbleeds (CMB) in the diagnosis of main cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases with cognitive impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: CMB were studied in 120 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and vascular dementia using 1.5T MRI in T2 * gradient echo. An impact of CMB on cognitive functions and the relationship with signs of vascular and neurodegenerative lesions of the brain were studied as well. The neuropsychological battery included Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale (MoCA), Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (A

Prognostic Factors for Cognitive Decline After Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke and dementia are closely related, but no prospective study ever focused on poststroke cognitive decline in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We aimed to determine prognostic factors for cognitive decline in patients with ICH. METHODS: We prospectively included 167 consecutive ICH survivors without preexisting dementia from the Prognosis of Intra-Cerebral Hemorrhage (PITCH) cohort. Median follow-up was 4 years (interquartile range, 2.3-5.4). We explored factors associated with cognitive decline using linear mixed models. Cognitive decline was determin

Neuropathological comparisons of amnestic and nonamnestic mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Although there are studies investigating the pathologic origins of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), they have revolved around comparisons to normal elderly individuals or those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other dementias. There are few studies directly comparing the comprehensive neuropathology of amnestic (aMCI) and nonamnestic (naMCI) MCI. METHODS: The database of the Brain and Body Donation Program ( www.brainandbodydonationprogram.org ), a longitudinal clinicopathological study of normal aging and neurodegenerative disorders, was queried for subjects who were carrying a d

Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases: Focus on mild cognitive impairment.

The mild cognitive impairment (MCI) concept was developed to identify the earliest stages of cognitive impairment. MCI and, more specifically, amnestic MCI were initially proposed as transitional states that ultimately progress to full blown Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, MCI subjects do not uniformly progress to dementia (either AD or another) and may revert back to normal cognitive state. The MCI as concept has been borrowed from AD to other neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). However the operational definition of MCI may not adequately convey the intended

Augmentation of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy for PTSD With Cognitive Enhancers.

Exposure-based therapy has proven to be useful to treat various anxiety disorders as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite its efficacy, a fair proportion of patients remain symptomatic after treatment. Different lines of research have put considerable efforts to investigate ways to enhance the efficacy of exposure-based therapy, which could ultimately lead to better clinical outcomes for patients. Given that this type of therapy relies on extinction learning principles, neuroscience research has tested different adjuncts that could be used as cognitive enhancers through their

Germinoma in the bilateral basal ganglia presented with cognitive deterioration.

PURPOSE: Here, we report a case of pediatric germinoma located in the bilateral basal ganglia, which presented with severe cognitive deteriorations. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old boy presented with decreased school performance and mild cognitive disturbances. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain revealed T2 hyperintensity in the bilateral basal ganglia. The patient was initially observed by a local hospital and had screening for metabolic diseases or inflammatory diseases. Lesions with similar characteristics were also found in the pituitary stalk and infundibulum, and these lesions were

Serum leptin and risk of cognitive decline in elderly italians.

BACKGROUND: US studies suggest that leptin, a fat-derived hormone, may be protective against the development of dementia. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the complex relationship between leptin levels and cognitive decline in elderly Italians. METHODS: We studied circulating fasting leptin levels in 809 elderly adults free from dementia who participated in the prospective Italian population-based InCHIANTI study between 1998 and 2009 (mean follow-up of 8.0 years). Global cognitive decline was defined as a reduction of ≥5 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Trail-Making Tests A and

Is Cancer a Risk Factor for Cognitive Decline in Late Life?

With advances in screening and early detection, coupled with improved treatment and care, the number of cancer survivors has risen exponentially over the past several decades. Moreover, because age is the most significant risk factor for cancer, the majority of cancer survivors are over 65 years of age. Finally, cancer survivors often experience significant health issues for many years after the treatment has subsided. In the current article, we describe select research that has focused on changes to cognitive performance associated with cancer and its treatment, i.e., alterations that have be

[Pharmacological cognitive enhancement from a perspective of misuse and addiction].

Pharmacological "cognitive enhancement" (CE) and "pharmacological neuroenhancement" (PN) are different terms to describe the use of diverse substances by healthy individuals aiming at an increase of individual cognitive skills. Targets of CE are an increase of vigilance, attention, concentration, memory and motivation. Substances used for pharmacological CE can be divided into two categories: stimulants and non-stimulants. The sub-group of methylxanthines like caffeine as well as the sub-group of amphetamines like prescription and illicit amphetamine as well as methylphenidate and modafinil be

Gait transition dynamics are modulated by concurrent cognitive activity.

In tasks with two categorically distinct behavioral possibilities a person beginning with one option will typically switch to the other at a higher value of a control parameter in an ascending (increasing) sequence than in a descending (decreasing) sequence. For example, the switch from walking to running on an accelerating treadmill occurs at a higher speed than the switch from running to walking on a decelerating treadmill. The reported research posed the question of whether this variant of behavioral hysteresis was affected by concurrent cognitive activity. Participants walked or ran on a t

Differential effects of dietary oils on emotional and cognitive behaviors.

Several dietary oils have been used preventatively and therapeutically in the setting of neurological disease. However, the mechanisms underlying their influence on brain function and metabolism remain unknown. It was investigated whether 3 types of dietary oils affected emotional behaviors in mice. Wild-type (WT) mice and sialyltransferase ST3Gal IV-knockout (KO) mice, which exhibit increased emotional and cognitive behaviors, were fed diets containing 20% dietary oils from post-weaning to adulthood. Mice were fed pellets made from control feed AIN93G powder containing 18% fish oil, soybean o
