Overview of Social Cognitive Dysfunctions in Rare Developmental Syndromes With Psychiatric Phenotype.

Rare neurodevelopmental syndromes often present social cognitive deficits that may underlie difficulties in social interactions and increase the risk of psychosis or autism spectrum disorders. However, little is known regarding the specificities of social cognitive impairment across syndromes while it remains a major challenge for the care. Our review provides an overview of social cognitive dysfunctions in rare diseases associated with psychiatric symptoms (with a prevalence estimated between 1 in 1,200 and 1 in 25,000 live births: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Fragile X syndr

Effect of social influence on antiviral therapy behavior among chronic hepatitis B patients with different disease knowledge levels.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a global health challenge with low rates of diagnosis and treatment worldwide. Since social factors and individual cognition significantly influence antiviral therapy adherence in CHB patients, both of which are shaped by patients' understanding of hepatitis B, this study aimed to investigate the effects of social influences on antiviral therapy behavior among CHB patients with different levels of disease knowledge. METHODS: From March to October 2023, a survey was conducted among CHB patients in Fuqing City, Fujian Province. A self-designed scale was

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of ondansetron for the treatment of cocaine use disorder with post hoc pharmacogenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) has significant consequences and there remain no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies. Ondansetron is an indirect dopaminergic modulator that has shown efficacy in alcohol use disorder, particularly in phenotypic and genotypic subgroups, and was found to be efficacious in a pilot dose-finding trial for CUD. METHODS: One-hundred eight (108) adults with CUD were randomized to ondansetron 4 mg twice daily or placebo for 9 weeks and assessed up to thrice weekly to evaluate self-reported cocaine use and urine benzoylecgonine. Participants received cognitive-behavio

A multi-scale, circuit-to-gene signature of approach-bias modification in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Approach-bias modification (ApBM) is a cognitive training intervention with potential therapeutic value for internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, its clinical efficacy and the underlying neural mechanisms remain to be systematically investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ApBM for IGD and to identify the associated multi-scale neurobiological signatures, from brain connectivity to gene expression. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial involving individuals with IGD assigned to either an ApBM (N = 30) or a control group (N = 27). Resting-sta

A randomized controlled trial of a self-guided mobile app targeting repetitive negative thought to prevent depression in university students: study protocol of the Nurture-U Reducing Worry prevention trial.

BACKGROUND: Tackling poor mental health in university students has been identified as a priority in higher education. However, there are few evidence-based prevention initiatives designed for students. Repetitive Negative Thought (RNT, e.g. worry, rumination) is elevated in university students and is a well-established vulnerability factor for anxiety and depression. Furthermore, there are now evidence-based cognitive-behavioural interventions to tackle RNT. A mobile self-help cognitive-behavioural app targeting RNT, adapted for students may therefore be an effective, scalable, and acceptable

Dysfunctional attitudes and cognitive schemas in bipolar manic and unipolar depressed outpatients: implications for cognitively based psychotherapeutics.

Dysfunctional thought patterns are presumed to underlie cognitive biases in mood disorder patients. However, few studies have compared dysfunctional thought patterns in bipolar manic and unipolar depressed patients. Cognitive schemas and dysfunctional attitudes were evaluated using the cognitive checklist for mania and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS) in 34 bipolar manic, 35 unipolar depressed, and 29 nonpsychiatric control subjects. Unipolar depressed subjects had significantly higher total DAS scores and subfactor scores as compared with nonpsychiatric controls, whereas bipolar patients h

Quality of life in children with psychiatric disorders and parental well-being: Effects of group CBT.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multidimensional construct encompassing physical, psychological, and social functioning. It is increasingly used as a universal outcome in evaluating interventions for children with psychiatric disorders. This study examined the effects of group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) on child HRQoL in naturalistic clinical settings and explored associations between child HRQoL and parental well-being dimensions using network analysis. The sample included 109 children with mixed psychiatric disorders. Of these, 56 were initially assigned to a waitlist co…

A study on the effect of CBSM-based psychological intervention on self-management ability and quality of life in colorectal cancer patients from the perspective of benefit finding: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly prevalent malignant tumor in China. Patients often experience negative emotions due to disease- and treatment-related stress, which impairs their ability to self-manage the illness. Benefit finding (BF) can improve patients'quality of life through cognitive restructuring. Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) has been proven to exert positive intervention effects on breast cancer patients, but relevant research on its application in Chinese CRC patients and its impact on their BF, quality of life and self-management ability remains scarce

Providing Psychological Therapy Support and Improving Postdischarge Data Collection: Preliminary Evaluation of the "Paddle" App.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials of psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy typically show sustained posttreatment effects. However, less is known about individuals' outcomes following treatment in routine practice, and additionally, patient representatives have highlighted a need for better postdischarge support. OBJECTIVE: The "Paddle" app aims to address these issues. Paddle allows patients to store their therapy materials, reflect on sessions, and monitor their well-being during and after treatment, completing outcome questionnaires and monthly reviews. METHODS: Study 1 e…

Parental involvement in cognitive behavioral group treatment for adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that parents of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often accommodate symptoms which may contribute to the maintenance and reinforcement of the disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is recommended as a first-line treatment for children and adolescents with OCD, and it is common practice to involve parents in the treatment. However, little is known about the experiences of parents involved in CBT. Therefore, this study aimed to explore parents’ experiences of being involved in their child’s OCD treatment through group CBT for ad…
