[Chinese expert consensus on the surgical treatment of right-sided colon cancer (2024 edition)].

In the past two decades, with the development and application of laparoscopic technique and the promotion of the concept of complete mesocolic excision, significant changes have occurred in the surgical treatment of right-sided colon cancer. The Chinese Society of Colorectal Surgery and Chinese Colorectal Research Consortium (CCRC) Organized national experts in colorectal surgery to form a consensus on 14 key clinical issues related to right hemicolectomy, taking into account the preferences of Chinese doctors and patients as well as the pros and cons of intervention measures, with a view to s

Feasibility of two levels of protein intake in patients with colorectal cancer: findings from the Protein Recommendation to Increase Muscle (PRIMe) randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Low muscle mass (MM) predicts unfavorable outcomes in cancer. Protein intake supports muscle health, but oncologic recommendations are not well characterized. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of dietary change to attain 1.0 or 2.0 g/kg/day protein diets, and the preliminary potential to halt MM loss and functional decline in patients starting chemotherapy for stage II-IV colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were randomized to the diets and provided individualized counseling. Assessments at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks included weighed 3

TGF-β Modulated Pathways in Colorectal Cancer: New Potential Therapeutic Opportunities.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with 20% of patients presenting with metastatic disease at diagnosis. TGF-β signaling plays a crucial role in various cellular processes, including growth, differentiation, apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), regulation of the extracellular matrix, angiogenesis, and immune responses. TGF-β signals through SMAD proteins, which are intracellular molecules that transmit TGF-β signals from the cell membrane to the nucleus. Alterations in the TGF-β pathway and mutations in SMAD proteins are common in meta

[Targeting HER2 in colorectal cancer].

Among the molecular subgroups of interest in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), innovations are underway for tumors with overexpression of HER2 (Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2). Overexpression of the HER2 protein concerns 2 to 5% of CRC at any stage mainly located in the distal colon and rectum. Diagnosis is based on immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization with appropriate criteria for colorectal localization, and molecular biology (NGS: next-generation sequencing). Overexpression of HER2 is a predictive factor for resistance to treatments targeting EGFR which are indicated in

Post-operative complications after colorectal cancer surgery increased with higher BMI.

INTRODUCTION: Because of conflicting evidence regarding overweight and post-operative complications, this study focused on post-operative complications and death within 30 and 90 days after curatively intended surgery for colorectal cancer and its association with BMI. METHODS: The study included all patients who had potentially curative surgery for colon or rectum cancer in Denmark from 2014 through 2018. The primary endpoint was post-operative complications within 30 days of surgery and secondary endpoints were 30- and 90-day mortality. All clinically relevant confounders were included in a

Autoantibody repertoire profiling in tissue and blood identifies colorectal cancer-specific biomarkers.

Autoantibodies (AAbs) in the blood of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients have been evaluated for tumor detection. However, it remains uncertain whether these AAbs are specific to tumor-associated antigens. In this study, we explored the IgG and IgM autoantibody repertoires in both the in situ tissue microenvironment and peripheral blood as potential tumor-specific biomarkers. We applied high-density protein arrays to profile AAbs in the tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte supernatants and corresponding serum from four patients with CRC, as well as in the serum of three noncancer controls. Our findings

Factors associated with long-term gastrointestinal symptoms in colorectal cancer survivors in the women's health initiatives (WHI study).

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors often experience long-term symptoms after cancer treatments. But gastrointestinal (GI) symptom experiences are under-investigated in CRC survivors. We described persistent GI symptoms after cancer treatments in female CRC survivors and assessed GI symptoms' risk and life-impact factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study utilized data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Life and Longevity After Cancer (LILAC) study that recruited postmenopausal women. Correlation analyses and multivariable linear regression models were used. RESULTS: CRC survivor

Association between weight cycling and risk of colorectal cancer: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Weight cycling is the repeated episodes manifesting intentional weight loss and subsequent unintentional weight gain. Whether the frequency and magnitude of weight cycling is associated with colorectal cancer risk independent of body mass index (BMI) remains unknown. METHODS: Two prospective cohort studies, Nurses' Health Study I and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, followed 85,562 participants from 1992 to 2014. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding the frequency and magnitude of intentional weight loss in the past 4 years at the baseline. Hazard ratios (HRs) and

Circulating vitamin D concentration and risk of 14 cancers: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have revealed relationships between circulating vitamin D concentrations and the risk of different types of cancer, although the potential causal relationship remains controversial. This study aims to investigate the presence of a causal relationship between circulating vitamin D concentrations and the risk of different types of cancer. METHODS: Summary statistics from corresponding genome-wide association studies (GWASs) were used to investigate the causal relationship between circulating vitamin D concentrations and the risk of 14 cancers. "Endoscopic" adenoma detection rate as a quality indicator of colonoscopy: First report from the J-SCOUT study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether reasonable detection rate of endoscopically diagnosed lesions as adenoma ("endoscopic" adenoma detection rate [ADR]) could be calculated with a database generated from colonoscopy reports and whether it could be used as a surrogate colonoscopy quality indicator of "pathological" ADR. METHODS: A lesion-by-lesion database of colonoscopies performed between 2010 and 2020 at eight Japanese endoscopy centers and corresponding pathology database were integrated. Differences in numbers of detected polyps, "endoscopic" and "pathological" adenomas, and what these differe

Efficacy and accuracy of faecal sampling by a digital rectal examination for faecal immunochemical testing.

AIM: A digital rectal examination (DRE) during routine assessment for patients with abdominal symptoms provides an opportunity to obtain faeces from the glove for faecal immunochemical testing (FIT). Here, we compared sampling via DRE to the standard faecal sampling by patients. METHOD: Patients were recruited to a prospective observational cohort study between July 2019 and March 2020. Patients provided a sample for the FOB Gold Wide® which was compared to a further sample taken at clinic via DRE. Clinicians reported whether they obtained a 'good' sample filling all the grooves, a 'poor' sam

Postoperative Probiotics Administration Attenuates Gastrointestinal Complications and Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis Caused by Chemotherapy in Colorectal Cancer Patients.

The current study aims to evaluate the potential roles of taking probiotics postoperatively in attenuating the gastrointestinal complications and disturbed gut microbiota in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients undergoing chemotherapy. One hundred eligible CRC patients who were treated with radical surgery and needed to receive chemotherapy were recruited. Half of them were randomly assigned to the Probio group to take a probiotic combination from post-operation to the end of the first chemotherapeutic course. The other half of patients taking placebo instead were classified as the Placebo group.

The Diagnostic Performance of Fecal Immunochemical Tests for Detecting Advanced Neoplasia at Surveillance Colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: An increasing burden on health care resources has resulted in a backlog of individuals requiring colonoscopy, with delays in surveillance possibly detrimental for individuals at increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study investigated the use of a 2-sample fecal immunochemical test (FIT) to establish those most likely to have advanced neoplasia (AN) and in need of prioritized surveillance colonoscopy. METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted in the tertiary care setting. Participants completed a 2-sample FIT (OC-Sensor, Eiken Chemical Company) within 90 day
