UNLABELLED: Pneumonic plague is one of the clinical forms of plague, of low frequency and high mortality, transmitted by direct inhalation of Yersinia pestis coming from an animal or from person to person.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the cases of primary pneumonic plague in an outbreak in the north of Peru.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical records of the confirmed cases of primary pneumonic plague presenting in an outbreak occurring in La Libertad, in July 2010, were reviewed, also the search and contact investigation was performed.
RESULTS:

Intestinal microbiotype necessary for life is a source of complications in childhood. Bacterial translocation is responsible of endogenous septicaemia and invasive complications. We report five cases of severe invasive infections associated with diarrhoea, digestive bleeding or sepsis. Biological parameters for inflammation are highly positive, and blood cultures reveal bacterial identification: salmonella enteridis, enterobacter cloacae, campylobacter jejuni, escherichia coli or clostridium difficile. We describe the predisposing factors and susceptibility status to develop translocation: inv

Human infection by Cunninghamella bertholletiae occurs almost exclusively in immunocompromised patients. Infections due to this microorganism have been most frequently diagnosed in patients with hematological malignancies, with neutropenia and in diabetes mellitus patients. This work reports a case of fungal infection by Cunninghamella bertholletiae isolated from blood in a man with a complex clinical picture, involving diabetes and pharmacological immunosupression. Blood culture at room temperature and at 37 degrees C on Sabouraud agar grew a single mold with characteristic properties of Cunn

Abstract The larval stages of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax are responsible for myiasis, which primarily affects wounds. We report the case of a bed-ridden patient with dementia who developed right nasal myiasis during his stay at Cayenne Hospital. Progression was favorable, but the nasal pyramid was partially destroyed. In zones where this fly is endemic, particular attention should be given to hospitalized patients with wounds and consciousness problems.

From time to time hospitals are in the focus of the local and national media because of cases of nosocomial Legionnaires' disease. In particular intensive care patients are a risk group because of their high amount of immunocompromised patients with an increased risk of developing a Legionellosis. Therefore it is an important aim to maintain an effective prevention system. Nevertheless in some hospitals legionella can be identified. Particularly in these hospitals a high level of attention is required to recognize cases of legionellosis and to take adequately steps to avoid outbreaks of legion

Until the 1980s, recovery of Candida species from normally sterile body sites in high-risk infants was often dismissed as contamination. Such delay in diagnosis often resulted in death, multifocal disease, or significant morbidity, outcomes that still occur today. Problems establishing the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis persist, while the frequency of this infection in increasingly fragile and smaller premature infants appears to be increasing. Standard culture techniques have limited sensitivity and often take several days for recovery of Candida when positive. Heightened suspicion and imp

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease represent a unique infection control problem because prions exhibit an unusual resistance to conventional chemical and physical decontamination methods. This paper reviews the recent literature and provides recommendations for the prevention of nosocomial transmission of prion agents.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recommendations to prevent the cross-transmission of infection from medical devices potentially contaminated with prions have been based primarily on prion inactivation studies. Newer recommendations consider inactivation data,

Legionnaires' disease is a community-acquired or hospital-acquired pneumonia, and the immunocompromised patient is at particular risk. We report a case of serogroup 1 pneumonia in a renal transplant patient shortly after grafting. No source of infection was identified in the hospital unit, but an extended investigation located patient exposure to a shower during a weekend home stay. Sampling at the hospital, in the patient's flat, other flats, and the laundry of the same building returned only one positive result from the patient's showerhead. Strain identity was confirmed by pulsed-field elec

The cases of two elderly patients who complained of general malaise after they had undergone ward transfer (due to rationalisation of the rehabilitation service) are discussed. Both were pyrexial and had signs of pneumonic consolidation. Subsequent investigation revealed that their symptoms were due to infection with Legionella pneumophila. Their cases highlight the problems associated with ward closures and the hazards of stagnant water.

A summer and autumn peak in incidence is a characteristic epidemiological feature of Legionnaires' disease, a fact which may help in diagnosis. Previous reports from Scotland have reported a winter peak. This study examined the seasonal variation in Legionnaires' disease in Scotland in each year and by category of diagnosis. A characteristic summer/autumn peak was seen for travel-related infection. For non-travel infection, there was an autumnal peak between 1978 and 1982 but an early winter peak between 1983 and 1986. Overall, the pattern could be described as a summer/autumn plateau reaching

Since the discovery of Legionella pneumophila in the late 1970s, this organism and other Legionella sp have been an important cause of pneumonia in solid organ transplant recipients. Legionella sp are obligate aerobes that require a source of amino acids, iron, and L-cystine. Growth is enhanced in a 5% CO2 atmosphere at 37 degrees C in the presence of charcoal. Legionella sp reside in water supplies and hospital outbreaks associated with contaminated water have been described. Transplant recipients are particularly susceptible to Legionella infection. Legionella pneumonia tends to occur within

Consecutive injections of microfilariae of L. carinii and D. viteae were carried out in the homologous or heterologous sequence into the corresponding natural or into the experimental hosts. Microfilariae of D. viteae are imunogenic in Sigmodon specifically and crossreacting as well. However, in the natural host, Meriones, they are doubtlessly tolerogenic. The sojourn and level of microfilaraemia are prolonged resp. higher when living D. viteae-Mf are injected s.c. followed by an i.v. injection. However, freeze-killed microfilariae of D. viteae are immunogenic in Meriones. Obviously the two fi
