Trace elements and vitamins in maintenance dialysis patients.

Although protein-energy malnutrition occurs commonly in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing maintenance dialysis treatment, it is not the only form of malnutrition that may exist in these individuals. They may also suffer from deficiencies of micronutrients, particularly trace elements and vitamins. More commonly occurring vitamin deficiencies in maintenance dialysis patients include those for vitamin C (ascorbate), folate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol). Among trace elements, deficiencies may occur more commonly for iron, zinc, and possibl

Loss of tumor suppressors KAI1 and p27 identifies a unique subgroup of primary melanoma patients with poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, no study assessed simultaneously a variety of organ-specific autoantibodies and the prevalence of organ-specific autoimmune diseases in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate organ-specific autoantibodies and autoimmune diseases in JSLE and JDM patients. METHODS: Forty-one JSLE and 41 JDM patients were investigated for autoantibodies associated with autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), autoimmune

Severe Hypophosphatemia Following Ferric Carboxymaltose in a Patient With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the large and small bowel, which includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common complications in people with inflammatory bowel disease. The treatment of choice is intravenous iron infusion. There is a lack of awareness of side effects of intravenous iron (Ferinject) such as hypophosphatemia, which can prolong hospital admission. We present the case of a patient with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin D deficiency who developed severe hypophosphatemia a

[Celiac disease in adults revealed by sensory-motor neuropathy].

Central or peripheral nervous system complications are occasionally observed in adult patients with celiac disease. Several mechanisms have been proposed including vitamin deficiency, vascular inflammation and a direct effect of gluten intolerance. Typical nerve fiber damage due to demyelinization has been suggested. We observed a 65-year old woman with a right peroneal nerve palsy superimposed on a diffuse peripheral neuropathy who was found to have folic acid deficiency which in turn led to the diagnosis of adult celiac disease. Electrophysiological and histological studies demonstrated a pr

[Neurologic and psychologic disorders in folic acid deficiency].

Folic acid deficiency is the most common of all vitamin deficiencies in North America and in Western Europe, usually in association with other vitamin deficiencies. Alcoholism is considered to be the most frequent cause of folic acid deficiency, as far as the Western world is concerned. Severe neurological and mental disturbances can develop in case of folate deficiency probably long before the manifestation of macrocythaemia. Among the neurological sequelae of folic acid deficiency the main phenomena that are discussed as likely are polyneuropathy, funicular disease of the spine and restless

Scurvy in pediatric age group - A disease often forgotten?

Scurvy is caused by prolonged severe dietary deficiency of vitamin C. Being rare as compared to other nutritional deficiencies, it is seldom suspected and this frequently leads to delayed recognition of this disorder. Children with abnormal dietary habits, mental illness or physical disabilities are prone to develop this disease. The disease spectrum of scurvy is quite varied and includes dermatological, dental, bone and systemic manifestations. Subperiosteal hematoma, ring epiphysis, metaphyseal white line and rarefaction zone along with epiphyseal slips are common radiological findings. High

Diagnosis and treatment of unexplained anemia with iron deficiency without overt bleeding.

A general overview is given of the causes of anemia with iron deficiency as well as the pathogenesis of anemia and the para-clinical diagnosis of anemia. Anemia with iron deficiency but without overt GI bleeding is associated with a risk of malignant disease of the gastrointestinal tract; upper gastrointestinal cancer is 1/7 as common as colon cancer. Benign gastrointestinal causes of anemia are iron malabsorption (atrophic gastritis, celiac disease, chronic inflammation, and bariatric surgery) and chronic blood loss due to gastrointestinal ulcerations. The following diagnostic strategy is rec

Expression of lysosomal enzymes in human mutant fibroblast-chick erythrocyte heterokaryons.

The generation of enzymes located in lysosomes, in cytosol or in endoplasmatic reticulum/Golgi complex is studied in heterokaryons in which chick erythrocyte nuclei are reactivated. The lysosomal enzymes, alpha-glucosidase (alpha-glu) and beta-galactosidase (beta-gal), are synthesized in heterokaryons obtained after fusion of chick erythrocytes with human fibroblasts of patients with Pompe's disease (alpha-glu-deficient) and GM1-gangliosidosis (beta-gal-deficient), respectively. The enzymes appear to be of chick origin and their activities can be detected at first around 4 days after fusion, i

Tumor necrosis factor receptor associated factor 6 is not required for atherogenesis in mice and does not associate with atherosclerosis in humans.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factors (TRAFs) are important signaling molecules for a variety of pro-atherogenic cytokines including CD40L, TNF alpha, and IL1beta. Several lines of evidence identified TRAF6 as a pro-inflammatory signaling molecule in vitro and we previously demonstrated overexpression of TRAF6 in human and Murine atherosclerotic plaques. This study investigated the role of TRAF6-deficiency in mice developing atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Lethally irradiated low density lipoprotein receptor-deficient mi

Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency in Japan: A Case Report of Siblings and a Literature Review of Cases in Japan.

We report on two siblings with early onset lysosomal acid lipase deficiency or Wolman disease. Their parents had a consanguineous marriage. The children showed evidence of abdominal distension and failed to thrive, despite having regular nutrition. At 3-4 months of age, their abdominal distension and jaundice progressed rapidly and they died of liver failure. Sebelipase alfa, a recombinant form of human lysosomal acid lipase has recently been used as an enzyme replacement therapy in patients with later-onset cholesteryl ester storage disease. Therefore, we investigated cases of lysosomal acid

Epidemiology and treatment of patients with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia: a study on longitudinal German health claims data.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA), the most common deficiency diseases, may occur as isolated diseases or secondary to a causative disorder such as menorrhagia, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and heart disease (HD). As real-world data are limited, our objective was to assess the prevalence of ID/IDA, associated comorbidity, drug treatments focusing on trivalent ferric maltol, and healthcare resource utilization (HRU) with associated costs in Germany. METHODS: This retrospective, non-interventional cohort study analyzed anonymized German health claims data covering 2016–20…

High frequency of GATA2 variants in patients with pulmonary fungal disease without immunocompromised risk factors: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of pulmonary fungal diseases is on the rise. Individuals harboring underlying immunocompromised conditions such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), malignant tumors, or those who have undergone organ transplantation, among others, are particularly susceptible to fungal infections. However, in clinical practice, certain patients diagnosed with pulmonary fungal infections exhibit no discernible risk factors for immunosuppression. GATA2, a pivotal transcription factor governing hematopoiesis, is implicated in GATA2 def

Professor QIU Mao-Iiang is a famous Chinese physician of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in modern time and is one of representative figure of Chengijang acupuncture schools. The theory of "three benefits" of acupuncture for diseases of disgestive system is established according to pathogenesis. He holds that acupuncture is favorable in removing the stagnated liver qi, reinforcing the functions of the spleen and the stomach in treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer. For problems due to spleen deficiency, reinforcing method should be given to the main points, Back-shu points and Yuan-primary points

Rheumatologic manifestations in patients with selected primary immunodeficiencies evaluated at the University Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize an IgA deficient and common variable immunodeficiency (CVI) group of patients in terms of the presence of rheumatologic manifestations. BACKGROUND: Although the molecular basis of some of the primary immunodeficiencies has been elucidated, it has not been possible to explain why in most cases these conditions are often associated with autoimmune manifestations, besides infections. The concomitant inability to fight infections adequately (immunodeficiency) and an inordinate reaction of the immune system to self components (autoimmunity) has been a perplexing situatio
