Affective disorders-developments of ICD-11 in comparison with ICD-10.

With the introduction of the 11th revision of the World Health Organization (WHO) "International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems" (ICD-11), structural and content-related adjustments were made to the diagnostic guidelines for affective disorders, which are presented in this review article. The update has resulted in some changes to the diagnostic classification of affective disorders, based on the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5). The ICD-11 assigns depressive symptoms to so-called clusters, the main symptoms of depress

Involvement of vulva in lichen sclerosus increases the risk of antidepressant and benzodiazepine prescriptions for psychiatric disorder diagnoses.

While vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) causes intense pruritus, associated risks of mood disorders and prescription patterns and impact of concurrent sexual dysfunction are unknown. We queried TriNetX Diamond Network between 2009 and 2022, conducting three comparisons after propensity-score matching for demographics and relevant comorbidities: (1) women with lichen sclerosus (LS) sparing the vulva vs. women with VLS; (2) VLS patients who received treatment within 6 months of diagnosis vs. patients who did not and (3) VLS patients with vs. without sexual dysfunction. Outcomes included new depressi

At-Home Telehealth-Supported Subcutaneous Ketamine Therapy for Safety, Feasibility, and Clinical Outcomes in Adults With Moderate to Severe Depression, Anxiety, or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in a Large, Heterogeneous Cohort in the United States: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are leading global causes of disability. Standard interventions have slow mechanisms of action, high attrition, and significant accessibility barriers. While intravenous and intranasal ketamine are rapid-acting alternatives, high cost and intensive logistical requirements limit adoption. Sublingual at-home ketamine addresses some gaps but is constrained by low bioavailability and variable absorption. Subcutaneous administration offers high bioavailability and precise dosing, potentially bridging the gap between in-clinic

Bright light therapy versus physical exercise to prevent co-occurring depression in adolescents and young adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a multicentre, three-arm, randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial.

Depression is common in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but preventive behavioural interventions are lacking. This randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial aimed to study a physical exercise intervention (EI) and bright light therapy (BLT)-both implemented and monitored in an individual, naturalistic setting via a mobile health (m-health) system-for feasibility of trial design and interventions, and to estimate their effects on depressive symptoms in young people with ADHD. Two hundred seven participants aged 14-45 years were randomised to 10-week add-on intervention of ei

Does rTMS on brain areas of mirror neurons lead to higher improvements on symptom severity and empathy compared to the rTMS standard procedure? - Results from a double-blind interventional study in individuals with major depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: A key feature of major depressive disorders is the lack of emotional processing such as empathy. To counter this, we tested, if brain stimulation on areas rich of mirror neurons on the left inferior parietal lobe (lIPL) might improve emotional processing, including empathy, compared to a standard brain stimulation on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC). METHODS: Twenty inpatients (mean age: 38.9 years; 55% females) with severe major depressive disorders and stable treatment of sertraline at therapeutic dosages were randomly assigned to either the rTMS condition on are

Depressive Disorders - From ICD-10 to ICD-11 Abstract: This article presents the main changes in the classification of depressive disorders associated with the transition from ICD-10 to ICD-11. We evaluate the changes regarding their relevance for diagnostic assessment during childhood and adolescence and the current state of research. Some changes were implemented in the categorization of disorders: In ICD-11, depressive disorders are listed as a disorder group separately from bipolar disorders and now include both dysthymic disorder as well as mixed depressive and anxiety disorder. With the

Suicide risk in patients with somatization disorder.

The aim of the study was to assess suicide risk in psychiatric outpatients with and without somatization disorder. A total sample of 120 psychiatric outpatients was used in the study, 29 of whom met diagnostic criteria for somatization disorder. The results indicated that somatization disorder was significantly associated with suicide attempts even when the effects of both a comorbid major depressive disorder and a comorbid personality disorder were statistically controlled for. The results suggest that, although a patient meets the criteria for a principal diagnosis of major depressive disord

Bipolar spectrum disorder: improving its recognition and diagnosis.

The lifetime prevalence of bipolar I disorder is approximately 1%. However, the prevalence of bipolar spectrum disorder is substantially higher. Bipolar spectrum disorder is a longitudinal diagnosis characterized by abnormal mood swings comprising some of the following cross-sectional clinical states: mania, hypomania, mixed states, hyperthymic temperament, major depressive episode, and depressive mixed state. Most bipolar spectrum patients present for treatment during a depressive episode, and therefore clinicians often miss the diagnosis of bipolar spectrum disorder. Several studies have doc

Onset and persistence of postpartum depression in an inner-city maternal health clinic system.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depressive disorders lead to maternal disability and disturbed mother-infant relationships, but information regarding the rates of major depressive disorder in minority women is noticeably lacking. The goal of this study was to determine whether the risk factors for and rate of postpartum major depressive disorder in a predominantly African American and Hispanic clinic population would be similar to those reported for Caucasian women. METHOD: Investigators systematically screened all women scheduled for their first postpartum visit on selected days at four publicly funde

Reduced density of calbindin immunoreactive GABAergic neurons in the occipital cortex in major depression: relevance to neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest dysfunction of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic system in major depressive disorder. Neuroimaging studies report reduced levels of GABA in the dorsolateral prefrontal and occipital cortex of depressed patients. Our previous postmortem study revealed a reduction in the density and size of calbindin-immunoreactive (CB-IR) GABAergic neurons in the prefrontal cortex in major depressive disorder. The goal of this study was to test whether the changes in CB-IR neurons can also be detected in the occipital cortex, where neuroimaging studies report

The correlation of depression with functional activity in Parkinson's disease.

We evaluated 109 Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in three ways: using a standardized psychiatric interview for depression and anxiety, using standardized neurological evaluation for motor disability, and using cognitive assessment for cognitive impairment. Six of the 109 patients who had dementia and another two afflicted with organic delusional disorder were excluded from further analysis. The remaining 101 PD patients were divided into the following three groups according to the DSM-III-R criteria: major depressive disorder (n = 18), other depressive disorders (n = 25) includi

Polygenic risk scores for mood disorders and actigraphy estimates of sleep and circadian rhythms: A preliminary study in bipolar disorders.

In bipolar disorders, abnormalities of sleep patterns and of circadian rhythms of activity are observed during mood episodes, but also persist during euthymia. Shared vulnerabilities between mood disorders and abnormalities of sleep patterns and circadian rhythms of activity have been suggested. This exploratory study investigated the association between polygenic risk scores for bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, actigraphy estimates of sleep patterns, and circadian rhythms of activity in a sample of 62 euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder. The polygenic risk score - bipola
