Patch testing is an important tool in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. Although this technique can be accurate, occasionally the results may be inconclusive. A previously positive result to an allergen may become negative upon repeat testing, and this may complicate the process of achieving a definitive diagnosis. There are some potential explanations for such inconsistencies, including the Excited Skin Syndrome, irritant reactions, a need to repeat the diagnostic algorithm, "rogue" reactions, and "contact allergy." Using a modified FCA (Freund's complete adjuvant) procedure, the sensitizing capacity of Euxyl K 400 and its ingredients, 1,2-dibromo-2,4-dicyanobutane and 2-phenoxyethanol, has been studied in guinea pigs. The experiments demonstrate that a distinct but weak sensitizing potency exists for Euxyl K 400 and dibromodicyanobutane. Phenoxyethanol remained almost negative. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot trial was to determine whether rates of contact dermatitis following cutaneous antisepsis for central catheter placement were similar among neonates treated with chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone-iodine. Chlorhexidine gluconate absorption was also evaluated.
