An efficient synthesis of 6H-6-iminothiopyran-2,3-dicarboxylate and 1H-isothiochromene-3,4-dicarboxylate derivatives via one-pot reactions between acetylenic esters, aryl isothiocyanates and enaminones in dichloromethane at room temperature is described. An efficient, convenient, one-pot synthesis of 2,3,3a,4-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]quinazolin-5(1H)-one and 2,3,3a,4-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]quinazoline-1,5-dione was accomplished in good yields via the novel reductive cyclization of 2-nitrobenzamides with haloketones or keto acids mediated by SnCl(2).2H(2)O system. A variety of substrates can participate in the process with good yields, making this methodology suitable for library synthesis in drug discovery efforts.

Dihydrouridine synthases (DUSs) are flavin-dependent enzymes that catalyze site-specific reduction of uracils in tRNAs. The mechanism of DUS 2 from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied. A composite sorbent PANI/HA was prepared by adding humic acid (HA) into chemical oxidation process of polyaniline (PANI). The sorbent was characterized by BET analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and FT-IR spectra. Batch adsorption results showed that the sorbent had high affinity to Hg(II) in aqueous solutions. We investigated the role of the 58-kDa FTT0918 protein in the iron metabolism of Francisella tularensis. The phenotypes of SCHU S4, a prototypic strain of F. tularensis subsp. tularensis, and the Delta FTT0918 and Delta fslA isogenic mutants were analyzed. The gene product missing in the Delta fslA mutant is responsible for synthesis of a siderophore. When grown in broth with various iron concentrations, the two deletion mutants generally reached lower maximal densities than SCHU S4.
