OBJECTIVE: Cardiac-implantable electronic device (CIED) infections are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this review, we describe the risk factors and pathogenesis of CIED infections and review the rationale and the evidence for the use of antibiotic-eluting envelopes (ABEs) in patients at increased risk for CIED infections.

In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO2 plane. We studied the effect of dinitrosyl-iron complexes with N-acetyl-L-cysteine as a thiol-containing ligand (DNIC-Acc) after transdermal administration to rats. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy with a lipophilic NO spin trap (a complex of iron and diethyldithiocarbamate ions) showed that DNIC-Acc administration significantly increased the total level of NO in the lung and liver tissues of the animal, which was accompanied by a slight decrease in the mean BP (<10%).
