A postal questionnaire survey was undertaken in registered nursing homes in three different health districts in England: Gloucestershire, North Staffordshire and Leeds. Nursing homes may be registered as general nursing or mental health homes. If homes also have provision for residential beds these are defined as dual registered homes. Overall, 9% (438/4900) of residents, with an equal male:female split, had urinary catheters. Human babesiosis in the northeastern United States caused by Babesia microti (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) is mainly reported from coastal New England sites, where deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) are common. However, the piroplasm has been detected in microtine rodents elsewhere in association with I. angustus or other nidicolous ticks, suggesting that the agent is widely distributed but zoonotically significant only where a human-biting "bridge" vector is present. To explore whether different distributions of numbness and tingling in the hand can be usefully distinguished in epidemiologic studies of disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, the authors used a postal questionnaire, an interview, and a physical examination to collect information about risk factors, symptoms, and signs from a general population sample of 2,142 adults in Southampton, England, during 1998-2000. The authors distinguished six distributions of numbness and tingling and compared their associations with other clinical findings and with known risk factors for upper limb disorders.

Amphoacetates are organic compounds used in many industrial applications and in cosmetic formulations for the skin, hair and mucosa, as surfactants, mild foaming and cleansing agents in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 50%. Most investigations that report a positive association between obstetric complications and schizophrenia have been case-control studies that are often based on long-term maternal recall of events during pregnancy. Consumption of fruits and vegetables by a sample of 369 elderly people living in Nottingham, England, was analysed in relation to whether or not they were eating five portions a day. A clinical and genetic study of type 2 neurofibromatosis (NF2) has been carried out in the United Kingdom.
