CASE: We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) who sustained bilateral femoral neck fractures associated with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Denosumab therapy for 18 months markedly improved the lumbar bone mineral density and the bone turnover markers. No fractures or complications were recorded during the treatment period.
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of denosumab treatment for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in a patient with DMD. The drug merits additional testing as an effective therapy for osteopo

Bisphosphonates are widely used for prevention of fractures in patients at risk, mainly in the presence of osteoporosis and bone metastases. A number of adverse effects of prolonged bisphosphonate treatment have emerged. We would like to highlight the skeletal complications from which a radiologist may be the first healthcare professional to recognise the association with bisphosphonate therapy. We illustrate these complications (namely osteonecrosis of the jaw and less well-known atypical femoral shaft fractures), presenting radiological findings in our patients. We report a case where a one-stage osteotomy and fixation, using a long proximal femoral nail and fibular graft, was performed to correct a severe shepherd's crook deformity (70-degree varus and 50-degree retroversion) of the femoral neck with a pathological stress fracture in a patient with fibrous dysplasia. The neck shaft angle was corrected to 125 degrees. At the 57-month follow-up, the patient was free of pain and had no limp or evidence of recurrence.

AIM: Patients with hip fractures are often frail with multiple comorbidities and at risk of medical serious adverse events (SAEs). We investigated the HEALTH trial patient population to ascertain predictors of SAEs.

Eleven ipsilateral neck and shaft fractures of the femur in 11 patients (4 females, 7 males) were treated between May 1987 and December 1990 at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
