Intraosseous hemangioma arising in the clavicle.

Intraosseous hemangioma (IH) is commonly seen in the vertebral column and skull: however, IH occurring in the appendicular skeleton, including the clavicle, is uncommon. We herein report the case of a 69-year-old female presenting with IH of the left clavicle. The findings of preoperative imaging studies, including radiographs, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, fluorine-18-fludeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT and ultrasonography, are described. In particular, (18)F-FDG PET/CT showed an ill-defined osteolytic lesion with abnormally high FDG uptak

A follow up study of non-demented patients with primary visual cortical hypometabolism: prodromal dementia with Lewy bodies.

We previously reported non-demented patients with glucose hypometabolism in the primary visual cortex (PVC), which is the preferentially affected region in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). It remains unknown, however, whether these patients represent a prodromal DLB state. Eleven non-demented patients who attended our memory clinic for more than three years (mean follow-up period: 44 ± 5 months) were examined. All the patients had glucose hypometabolism in the PVC on [(18)F]-fluoro-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans at baseline. Four patients, including one

Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron-emission tomography/computed tomography imaging for adrenal masses in patients with lung cancer: review and diagnostic algorithm.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used as first-line staging for patients with newly diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Our purpose was to review the accuracy of FDG-PET/CT to predict adrenal gland metastasis, explain the causes for false-positive PET, and provide a diagnostic algorithm. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients with incidentally discovered lung masses were found to have hypermetabolic adrenal activity by FDG-PET/CT with maximal standard uptake value (SUV) of 4.5 and 6.5. Evaluation of hybrid PET/CT gastrography in gastric cancer.

AIM: With the recent advances in multidetector-row CT, a fusion of functional PET with three dimensional (3D) CT gastrography may provide enhanced diagnostic capability and help surgeons during preoperative planning. The diagnostic value of hybrid PET/CT gastrography was compared with that of conventional PET/CT alone in gastric cancer staging. PATIENTS, METHODS: Patients with gastric cancer (n = 101) confirmed by endoscopic biopsy specimens underwent conventional PET/CT and regional PET with contrast enhanced CT, followed by gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy at our institution from November 2

Sarcoidosis lymphoma syndrome - the value of PET-CT in the diagnosis.

We report a 52-year-old patient who developed B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subsequent to sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis was diagnosed 16 years ago and remained asymptomatic for 14 years after steroid treatment. She presented with new symptoms of arthralgia, photosensitivity, butterfly erythema, autoimmune antibodies (ANA, chromatin positivity) associated with progression of the known left upper lobe lesion on the chest X-ray suggesting primary autoimmune disease (systemic lupus erythematosus). As steroid treatment was not effective, we started bolus cyclophosphamide therapy after which progression

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in elderly patients with an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate of unknown origin.

Patients with an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and non-specific symptoms often pose a diagnostic dilemma. PET/CT visualises infection, inflammation and malignancy, all of which may cause elevated ESR. The objective of this study was to determine the contribution of 18F-fluorodeoxglucose positron emission tomography (PET/CT) in the diagnostic work-up of referred patients with an elevated ESR, in whom initial routine evaluation did not reveal a diagnosis. We conducted a combined retrospective (A) and prospective (B) study in elderly (>50 years) patients with a significantly eleva

PET molecular imaging to investigate higher brain dysfunction in patients with neurotrauma.

INTRODUCTION: Many neurotrauma patients suffer from higher brain dysfunction even when focal brain damage is not detected with MRI. We performed functional imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) to clarify the relationship between the functional deficit and symptoms of such patients. METHODS: Patients who complain of higher brain dysfunction without apparent morphological cortical damage were recruited. Thirteen patients underwent PET study to image glucose metabolism by (18)F-FDG, and central benzodiazepine receptor (cBZD-R) by (11)C-flumazenil, together with measurement of cognitio

Dysgraphia in Korean patients with Alzheimer's disease as a manifestation of bilateral hemispheric dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: In writing, linguistic (i.e., spelling) and nonlinguistic (i.e., arranging strokes or letters) functions are processed by the left and right hemispheres, respectively. The configuration of Korean alphabet, 'Hangul' invokes nonlinguistic, visuospatial functions that other writing systems use less extensively. Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have bilateral involvement of temporoparietal-frontal areas that are responsible for processing language and visuospatial functions. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the nature of Hangul writing dysfunction, which may be a

Infection dynamics and response to chemotherapy in a rabbit model of tuberculosis using [¹⁸F]2-fluoro-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography.

With a host of new antitubercular chemotherapeutics in development, methods to assess the activity of these agents beyond mouse efficacy are needed to prioritize combinations for clinical trials. Lesions in Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected rabbits are hypoxic, with histopathologic features that closely resemble those of human tuberculous lesions. Using [(18)F]2-fluoro-deoxy-d-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging, we studied the dynamics of tuberculosis infection in rabbits, revealing an initial inflammatory response followed by a consolidati
