A Randomised Controlled Trial of YOGa and Strengthening Exercise for Knee OsteoArthritis: Protocol for a Comparative Effectiveness Trial (YOGA Trial).

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disorder for which there is no cure. Current treatments are suboptimal. Exercise is a core treatment for knee OA, with muscle strengthening exercise commonly recommended. Yoga is a mind-body exercise intervention that can improve flexibility, muscle strength, balance, and fitness and potentially reduce symptoms of OA. However, there is a scarcity of robust, high-quality conclusive evidence on the efficacy of yoga in knee OA. We are currently conducting the first randomised comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness trial of a yoga program compared wi

Associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms of human exonuclease 1 and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Single camera markerless motion capture has the potential to facilitate at home movement assessment due to the ease of setup, portability, and affordable cost of the technology. However, it is not clear what the current healthcare applications of single camera markerless motion capture are and what information is being collected that may be used to inform clinical decision making. This review aims to map the available literature to highlight potential use cases and identify the limitations of the technology for clinicians and researchers interested in the collection of movement dat

Identification of two previously unreported Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene variants in a patient diagnosed with a dystrophinopathy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Becker muscular dystrophy are X-linked recessive disorders affecting muscle function, which are caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene (also known as the Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene). The resulting condition is dictated by the severity of the involved mutation; for instance, Duchenne muscular dystrophy presents in early childhood with rapid progression, whereas Becker muscular dystrophy exhibits a milder, later onset with slower progression. In this report, we present the case of a young patient with clinical symptoms of a dystrophinopathy

Proteomic and transcriptomic characterisation of FIA10, a novel murine leukemic cell line that metastasizes into the brain.

Brain metastasis leads to increased mortality and is a major site of relapse for several cancers, yet the molecular mechanisms of brain metastasis are not well understood. In this study, we established and characterized a new leukemic cell line, FIA10, that metastasizes into the central nervous system (CNS) following injection into the tail vein of syngeneic mice. Mice injected with FIA10 cells developed neurological symptoms such as loss of balance, tremor, ataxic gait and seizures, leading to death within 3 months. Histopathology coupled with PCR analysis clearly showed infiltration of leuke

Quantitative assessment of cerebellar ataxia, through automated limb functional tests.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar damage can often result in disabilities affecting the peripheral regions of the body. These include poor and inaccurate coordination, tremors and irregular movements that often manifest as disorders associated with balance, gait and speech. The severity assessment of Cerebellar ataxia (CA) is determined by expert opinion and is likely to be subjective in nature. This paper investigates automated versions of three commonly used tests: Finger to Nose test (FNT), test for upper limb Dysdiadochokinesia Test (DDK) and Heel to Shin Test (HST), in evaluating disability due to C

White matter lesions and glial activation in a novel mouse model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular white matter (WM) lesions are closely associated with cognitive impairment and gait disorders in the elderly. We have successfully established a mouse model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion that may provide new strategies for the molecular analysis of cerebrovascular WM lesions. METHODS: Adult C57Bl/6 male mice were subjected to bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) using external microcoils with varying inner diameters from 0.16 to 0.22 mm. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the frontal cortices was measured by laser-Doppler flowmetry at 2 hours a

Evaluating Laryngeal Stability in Drug-Induced Parkinsonism Using Hilbert-Huang Transform and Chaos Dynamics: A Multi-Vowel Nonlinear Acoustic Framework for Differential Diagnosis.

Background/Objectives: Drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) is a common extrapyramidal adverse effect of dopamine-receptor blocking agents, yet interpretable biomarkers of its acoustics remain limited. This study investigated whether nonlinear dynamics could provide physiologically interpretable markers of DIP and clarify how these abnormalities vary across vowels and extrapyramidal symptoms. Methods: Sustained phonations of five vowels (/a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/) were analyzed in 82 patients with DIP and 30 healthy controls. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) features were integrated along with Sample En

A novel multimodal AI framework for early diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor symptoms, but early diagnosis is challenging due to symptom overlap with other conditions and a lack of definitive biomarkers (clinical assessments). In this study, we propose a novel multimodal artificial intelligence (AI)-based decision support system aimed at the early diagnosis of idiopathic PD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first framework to enable the synchronous analysis of four distinct modalities: walking, facial expression, voice, and posture, whereas prior studies have typically focused
