OBJECTIVES: Neonatal sepsis is the third leading contributor to mortality and morbidity. Emanating resistance to antibiotics in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is considered a major burden. In this study, we aimed to investigate the bacterial prevalence and antibiotic profile among patients admitted with sepsis in the NICU of Cairo University Children Hospital.
METHODS: Neonates with suspected sepsis were evaluated for bacterial sepsis in their blood cultures. The neonates with positive bacterial blood culture were included in this study, whereas neonates with negative culture were excl

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological, clinical characteristics, and outcome of patients with left-side endocarditis caused by gram-negative bacteria.
METHOD: Prospective multicenter study of left-sided infective endocarditis reported in the Andalusian Cohort for the Study of Cardiovascular Infections between 1984 and 2008.
RESULTS: Among the 961 endocarditis, 24 (2.5%) were caused by gram-negative bacilli. The most common pathogens were Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enterica. Native valves (85.7%) were mainly affected, most of them …

An electron microscopic and cytochemical study of the Whipple bacillus in jejunal biopsies from three untreated patients was made using fixa … ria, but with an additional surface membrane. This membrane is different from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria because it has a symmetric profile, is thinner and has no periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive components. Normal-looking bacilli were seen very rarely inside jejunal macrophages, but degenerating bacteria were abundant in these phagocytes. Electron …

Global food security is threatened by crop losses due to plant diseases. Early detection of pathogens is essential for implementing effective management practices to mitigate the negative impacts of disease. On-site molecular diagnostic techniques have significantly advanced for rapid and accurate identification of pathogens, but DNA extraction remains a labour-intensive and time-consuming bottleneck. This study demonstrates the ability of polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) microneedle patches to extract detectable amounts of bacterial and plant DNA from diseased leaves within 1

RESULTS: PCT levels were significantly higher in sepsis caused by Gram-negative bacteria compared to Gram-positive bacteria, and showed a notable increase in Plasmodium infections (p < 0.0001). No significant association was observed between PCT levels and Candida albicans infections; however, cases involving non-albicans Candida specie …

The search for new antibiotics against multidrug-resistant (MDR), Gram-negative bacteria is crucial with respect to filling the antibiotics development pipeline, which is subject to a critical shortage of novel molecules. Screening of natural products is a promising approach for identifying antimicrobial compounds hosting a higher degree of novelty. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of four galloylglucoses active against different MDR strains of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. A crude acetone extract was prepared from Paeonia officinalis Linnaeus leaves, and bioaut…

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of BSI and antimicrobial resistance patterns amongst its common bacterial causes. We conducted a retrospective record review of blood culture results of patients hospitalized with BSI at University Hospital 'L. Vanvitelli' from 2016 to 2021. For each patient records were obtained from the database using microbiological information. Gram-positive bacteria were the most predominant pathogens followed by Gram-negative bacteria. Among all isolates, bacterial pathogens most f…

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid antimicrobial treatment.
METHODS: We determined the prevalence of bacterial isolates associated with BSI at Bukavu General Hospital (BGH), South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and their patterns of susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs, from February 2013 to January 2014.
RESULTS: We cultured 112 clinically relevant isolates from 320 blood cultures. Of these isolates, 104 (92.9%) were Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), with 103 bacilli (92.0%) and one coccus (0.9%). Among GNB, Escherichia…

BACKGROUND: Bacteria are increasingly resistant to antibiotics used to treat life-threatening infections in critically ill patients. The carbapenems represent the last line of defense against Gram-negative rods that are increasingly resistant to all other classes of β-lactam antibiotics used to treat life-threatening infections in critically ill patients. Carbapenem resistance in Gram-negative rods is most commonly caused by expression of carbapenemases, enzymes that hydrolyze the β-lactam ring of carbapenem antibiotics rendering them inactive. All of the available diagnostic tests rely on bac

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review focuses on recent changes in epidemiological aspects of bacteria-induced intra-abdominal infections (IAIs), including the dominant pathogens, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and emerging resistance phenotypes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Enterobacteriaceae species, including Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, remain the major pathogens contributing to abdominal sepsis, although Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii have recently become common causes of hospital-acquired IAIs. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli, especial

PURPOSE: To determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 12 antimicrobials in current ophthalmic use and 4 potentially new alternatives against isolates from bacterial keratitis.
METHODS: Bacteria were collected from cases of bacterial keratitis in six centers in the United Kingdom between 2003 and 2006. MICs were measured by using susceptibility strips containing a concentration gradient of the antimicrobials penicillin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, amikacin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, meropenem, linezo
