Coronavirus Disease 2019 is an Occupational Disease for Teachers: How to Support the Teacher Workforce.

Analyzing a growing body of epidemiological research that considers coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as an occupational disease situates teaching (eg, pre-kindergarten, elementary, secondary) among the more vulnerable occupations. Teachers have experienced a higher risk of COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, death, and Long COVID than people from many other occupations. More research attending to occupational patterns and risk mitigation is needed. Taking an occupational epidemiology approach for teachers can inform a wide array of policy solutions, including school environment improvement

Work environment and occupational risk assessment for small animal Portuguese veterinary activities.

The professional work of small animal veterinary staff encompasses a wide diversity of demanding tasks. This has prompted a number of studies covering physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, or psychological hazards, as well as their health effects upon veterinary workers. However, such results were obtained from self-reported surveys (via paper or online). This study reports the identification of potential hazards and provides a risk assessment of 15 veterinary clinics based on data from walk-through surveys, interviews with workers, and quantification of indoor air quality parameters incl

The global distribution of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne infection caused by a virus (CCHFV) from the Bunyaviridae family. Domestic and wild vertebrates are asymptomatic reservoirs for the virus, putting animal handlers, slaughter-house workers and agricultural labourers at highest risk in endemic areas, with secondary transmission possible through contact with infected blood and other bodily fluids. Human infection is characterized by severe symptoms that often result in death. While it is known that CCHFV transmission is limited to Africa, Asia and Europe, definitive global extents

[Accidents and injuries at work].

In the case of an accident at work, the person concerned is insured by law according to the guidelines of the Sozialgesetzbuch VII as far as the injuries have been caused by this accident. The most important source of information on the incident in question is the accident report that has to be sent to the responsible institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention by the employer, if the accident of the injured person is fatal or leads to an incapacity to work for more than 3 days (= reportable accident). Data concerning accidents like these are sent to the Deutsche Gesetzliche Un

The effects of safety handrails and the heights of scaffolds on the subjective and objective evaluation of postural stability and cardiovascular stress in novice and expert construction workers.

Work performed on scaffolds carries the risk of falling that disproportionately threatens the safety and health of novice construction workers. Hence, objective measures of the postural stability, cardiovascular stress, and subjective difficulty in maintaining postural balance were evaluated for four expert and four novice construction workers performing a manual task in a standing posture on a scaffold with and without safety handrails at two different elevation heights. Based on a multivariate analysis of variance, the experience, scaffold height, and presence of a handrail were found to sig

Shielding properties of lead-free protective clothing and their impact on radiation doses.

The shielding properties of two different lead-free materials-tin and a compound of 80% tin and 20% bismuth-for protective clothing are compared with those of lead for three typical x-ray spectra generated at tube voltages of 60, 75, and 120 kV. Three different quantities were used to compare the shielding capability of the different materials: (1) Air-kerma attenuation factors in narrow-beam geometry, (2) air-kerma attenuation factors in broad-beam geometry, and (3) ratios of organ and effective doses in the human body for a whole-body irradiation with a parallel beam directed frontally at th

A hospital-based screening program for natural rubber latex allergy.

BACKGROUND: Natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy has become an important occupational health problem for health care workers, of whom approximately 10% are reportedly sensitized. Some medical facilities have chosen to convert entirely to NRL-free gloves, but others have found this to be financially or logistically unfeasible. OBJECTIVES: The goals of this study were 1) to devise a NRL allergy screening program that could identify sensitized (at-risk) employees for the purpose of providing them with a safe working environment; and 2) to develop a glove conversion plan that would lead to the remo

Evolution of an on-site industrial physical therapy program.

This article describes the growth and cost benefits of an on-site industrial physical therapy program. The program was initiated in 1982 at one of five plants managed by a major corporation to help reduce the costs of musculoskeletal injury. A significant reduction in the occupational absence rate was noted at the plant with the physical therapy program. Now in its tenth year, the program has produced calculated savings of $8.3 million, a benefit-to-cost ratio of greater than 9 to 1. The physical therapy program now serves approximately 50% of the company's employees and provides technical ass

[Occupational exposure of the anesthesiologist to nitrous oxide and halothane. Control measures].

Anesthetic gas spillage does occur in the operating room. Anesthesiologists and other operating room personnel are likely exposed to health hazards caused by chronic exposure to anesthetic gases and vapours. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the possible relationship between the chronic exposure to anesthetic gases and their adverse effects on the health. Present data, while controversial, do not establish a cause-effect relationship. Nevertheless, until solid data refutes the existence of a health hazard for operating room personnel, the anesthesiologist must try to reduce the anes
