Recoil, dissection, and restenosis in Below-The-Knee (BTK) arteries following standard balloon angioplasty.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a growing health problem, with symptoms ranging from intermittent claudication to chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Balloon angioplasty in below-the-knee (BTK) PAD lesions is the mainstay treatment procedure but still a challenging one, given the heterogeneity in the patient population, multivessel and multilevel involvement, small-vessel size, long lesions (up to 40 cm), calcium burden, and lower flow rates with or without impaired runoff. The technical success of balloon angioplasty is often subverted by flow-limiting dissections, recoil with early

Influences on Skeletal Health and Bone Mineralization in Children.

Bone is in its most active formation phase of mineralization in the pediatric and adolescent population. Peak bone mass is achieved around the late teens to early 20s. Deficient bone mineralization and decreased peak bone mass acquisition predispose an individual to childhood fractures or lifelong fracture risk. Adolescent fragility or stress fractures should prompt a secondary evaluation for the causes of a low bone mineral content, the root of a fracture. The purpose of this article is to review published literature that discusses the risk factors associated with a decreased bone mineral con

Improving community coverage of Japanese encephalitis vaccination: lessons learned from a mass campaign in Battambang Province, Cambodia.

A mass Japanese encephalitis (JE) immunization campaign for children aged 9 months through 12 years was conducted in 2013 in Battambang province, western Cambodia. Vaccinators working at almost 2,000 immunization posts in approximately 800 villages provided vaccinations to almost 310,000 children using one dose of Chengdu Institute of Biological Products' live, attenuated SA14-14-2 JE vaccine (CD-JEV), achieving a coverage rate of greater than 90%. Lessons learned, in general for mass vaccination campaigns and specifically for vaccination with CD-JEV, are described. These observations will be

[Research progress of maternal immunization].

Maternal immunization is an immune strategy that protects both mothers and early-life infants from disease by the vaccination of pregnant women. The effect of maternal immunization is influenced by the types of vaccines, the timing of vaccination, the subtypes of antibodies induced by vaccines, and the health status of mothers themselves. Inactivated influenza vaccination during pregnancy and DPT vaccination during the third trimester of pregnancy have been widely used in the world, while Hepatitis B vaccine, pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines also show good efficacy and safety in pregnan

Chronic renal disease and antenatal care.

In 2018, it is unusual for women with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to be told that pregnancy is not an option. Maternal and foetal outcomes have steadily improved over the last 50 years and a successful pregnancy, resulting in a healthy infant without detrimental to maternal health, is commonplace. Nevertheless, the incidence of adverse outcomes including pre-eclampsia, preterm birth and small-for-gestational age infants is higher for women with CKD than the general population, requiring enhanced monitoring. Furthermore, as women with more advanced renal disease including dialysis recipients a

Gingival enlargement unveiling Crohn's disease - A report of a rarefied case.

This article highlights a peculiar case of Crohn's disease (CD) with the primary presenting symptom as localized gingival overgrowth in the anterior region of maxilla. The patient underwent surgical treatment with external bevel gingivectomy procedure. Follow-up after 6 months revealed no recurrence. A final diagnosis of CD was made, after following histopathological evaluation of the gingival biopsy and other special investigations. It is thus crucial to associate the localized granulomatous gingival overgrowth to systemic signs of CD. Intraoral occurrence preceding intestinal involvement is

Complex wounds and their management.

Complex wounds present a challenge to both the surgeon and patient in operative management, long-term care, cosmetic outcome, and effects on lifestyle, self-image, and general health. Each patient with complex wounds usually manifests multiple risk factors for their development. This article focuses on complex wounds involved with traumatic and orthopedic blunt or penetrating injuries, particularly in the extremities, as well as massive soft tissue infections including necrotizing fasciitis, gas gangrene, and Fournier gangrene. The principles of management of complex wounds involve assessing t

[Monitoring human African trypanosomiasis in Central Africa in 2001 and cartography: results and perspectives].

Cases of human African trypanosomiasis are distributed in changing geographical "outbreak areas" that can be visualized over time and space. Because of these variations in distribution, cartography and spatial analysis provide powerful tools for planning surveillance and control strategies. In 1996, the WHO in collaboration with the 15 most endemic countries in Central Africa undertook a program to develop a standardized inter-regional map of trypanosomiasis. This article provides a brief overview of the value of geomatic tools in public health followed by a description of the WHO program and

What do family planning clients and university students in Nairobi, Kenya, know and think about emergency contraception?

Currently, emergency contraception is seldom used in Kenya. As part of a larger study designed to provide insight into the possible roles for the method in Kenya, we assessed the knowledge of and attitudes towards emergency contraception in two groups of potential users, and we focus on these data specifically in this paper. We interviewed clustered samples of clients at ten family planning clinics in Nairobi (n = 282) and conducted four focus group discussions with students at two universities in Kenya (n = 42). Results show that despite relatively low levels of awareness and widespread misin

Maternal mortality in Bahrain with special reference to sickle cell disease.

The maternal mortality in Bahrain during the 10-year period, 1977-1986, was 33.9 per 100,000 livebirths; the second 5-year period showed a significant reduction (26.9) compared to the first 5-year period (42.3). Haemorrhage, pulmonary embolism, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy and infection were the main causes of maternal mortality. Sickle cell disease was found to be an underlying cause in about one third of the maternal deaths. Avoidable factors were present in 38% of the cases, the majority being due to the failure of the patients to seek medical care or follow medical advice. Health edu

Difficulties patients have at home after cataract surgery.

Twenty patients were interviewed to investigate their ability to manage eye-care and daily-living routines at home following uncomplicated unilateral cataract extraction without implantation of an artificial lens. A high degree of compliance with the recommendations of health care professionals was reported; however, difficulties were incurred in obtaining medications, reading labels, instilling eyedrops, applying the eye shield and providing a safe environment. Performance of daily-living routines presented no problems if help with shopping and heavy household tasks was available in the first

Why is the data quality of hospital morbidity so heterogeneous? A nationwide survey of Portuguese clinical coders.

BACKGROUND: Hospital morbidity data are used for hospital reimbursement in many countries and are also critical for epidemiological profiling and health planning, both of which depend on data quality. Exploring the clinical coders' perspective is crucial for implementing targeted interventions in this field. OBJECTIVE: To identify the main factors influencing the quality of health registries, the coding process and data quality, from the perspective of clinical coders in Portugal. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide online survey of clinical coders, informed by prior focus groups and a litera

Ontario healthcare workers who sought treatment for their mental health during the first five waves of the COVID-19 pandemic: a snapshot of self-referrals across the province.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers (HCWs) have reported COVID-19 pandemic-related adverse mental health impacts. We examined the demographic profile of HCWs who self-referred for mental health treatment, how referrals changed over time in relation to waves of COVID-19, what the main problem was for which HCWs sought treatment, and how this changed during the pandemic. METHODS: Five major healthcare institutions provided mental health supports to HCWs across Ontario during the pandemic. Data from May 2020 to March 2022 were collected from 2725 HCW self-referrals regarding referral frequency, mai

Climate Change and Cardiovascular Health: Advancing Resilient Action Beyond COP30.

COP30 in Belém highlighted the urgent intersection of climate change, air pollution, and cardiovascular health. Climate hazards including heatwaves, floods, wildfires, and deteriorating air quality disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, exacerbating cardiovascular disease and straining fragile health systems. Air pollution, a major contributor to global CVD mortality, shares common sources with climate change, yet both act through distinct health pathways. Low- and middle-income countries face the greatest burden, reflecting inequities in social determinants, energy use, and urban i
