Impact of sustainability policies on sterilization services in Latin America.

The Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception retrospectively examined the impact of funding decreases on access to sterilization services at 20 nongovernmental family planning clinics in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. Clinic staff were asked questions about client fees, caseloads, availability of comparable low-cost or free services nearby, cost-recovery activities, and the socioeconomic profile of clients before, during the time, and after subsidies were lowered or eliminated. Funding reductions were followed by decreased caseloads at 14 of the 20 sites studied. Of the si

Nurse-led risk-based primary healthcare intervention in midlife women's health management in Hong Kong: a stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Midlife women are facing many healthcare challenges, including unmet needs in screening and preventive care. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led risk-based women’s health intervention in enhancing preventive health service utilization and its impacts on self-management

Challenges and strategies in the multicultural sexual and reproductive healthcare encounter - a qualitative study on the perspectives of health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Sweden is shaped by strong equity and gender-equality ideals, yet migrant patients continue to experience disparities in SRH outcomes. Social, cultural, and structural factors can complicate clinical encounters, potentially posing obstacles to equitable access. This study explored how SRH professionals experience and manage challenges in multicultural clinical encounters. METHODS: Thirty‑one SRH professionals (midwives, nurses, physicians, social workers, sexologists, and nursing assistants) from youth and women's health clinics in Skåne wer

Community-based approach for prevention and control of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.

An action research design was conducted in two villages of Mueang District, Kanchanaburi Province to assess the effectiveness of a community-based approach program. Knowledge, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, and regular larval survey behavior were measured for program outputs. Container Index (CI), House Index (HI), and Breteau Index (BI) were used to confirm program outcomes. Key community stakeholders in the experimental village were identified and empowered through active learning in the village. Monthly meetings with the key stakeholders were used to share experiences learned, to

Inequality in America: the contribution of health centers in reducing and eliminating disparities in access to care.

Reducing and eliminating health status disparities by providing access to appropriate health care is a goal of the nation's health care delivery system. This article reviews the literature that demonstrates a relationship between access to appropriate health care and reductions in health status disparities. Using comprehensive site-level data, patient surveys, and medical record reviews, the authors present an evaluation of the ability of health centers to provide such access. Access to a regular and usual source of care alone can mitigate health status disparities. The safety net health cente

Survey of otolaryngology services in Central America: need for a comprehensive intervention.

In the developing world, there exists a scarcity of services and training in otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy, which is reflected by the gap between health care delivery in high-income countries and low-income countries. We surveyed, by questionnaire, the countries of Central America, except for Belize, because of the lack of otolaryngology services, on the following issues: availability of otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy services and equipment; otolaryngologist, audiologist, and speech therapist training; and availability of services in rural areas. Surveys were dis

Leveraging the CORE Group Partners Project Polio Infrastructure to Integrate COVID-19 Vaccination and Routine Immunization in South Sudan.

INTRODUCTION: Countries with fragile health systems like South Sudan experienced significant impacts on routine immunization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Routine immunization in children aged younger than 1 year declined due to pandemic-related constraints and was compounded by the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine, which was met with hesitancy and reluctance. When South Sudan reported the first COVID-19 case in March 2020, the CORE Group Partners Project (CGPP) rapidly integrated the COVID-19 outbreak response into its ongoing polio eradication activities, leveraging the existing polio in

From crisis to cuffs: The impacts of police involvement in mental health emergencies among racialized children, youth, and families in Toronto.

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation of mental health emergency response is primarily police informed. Whether service users feel supported by police-based crisis interventions is overlooked. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore the impact of policing on racialized children, youth, and families during mental health emergencies. METHODS: Through detailed narratives and testimonies from 11 racialized service users, the harms of police involvement in mental health emergencies are uncovered. Intervention experiences and help-seeking behaviours were discussed. Participants shared their impressions

Inclusion of abortion-related care in national health benefit packages: results from a WHO global survey.

INTRODUCTION: Service inclusion in a country's health benefit package (HBP) is an important milestone towards universal health coverage. This study aimed to explore HBP inclusion of abortion interventions globally. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the WHO HBP survey, in which officially nominated survey focal points were asked which interventions were included within the HBP of their country or area's largest government health financing scheme. Abortion inclusion was compared by region, income, legal status of abortion and HBP design process variables. Abortion inclusion was compared with other

Medical Expenditure for Chronic Diseases in Mexico: The Case of Selected Diagnoses Treated by the Largest Care Providers.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases (CD) are a public health emergency in Mexico. Despite concern regarding the financial burden of CDs in the country, economic studies have focused only on diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. Furthermore, these estimated financial burdens were based on hypothetical epidemiology models or ideal healthcare scenarios. The present study estimates the annual expenditure per patient and the financial burden for the nine most prevalent CDs, excluding cancer, for each of the two largest public health providers in the country: the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Mexican Inst

Navigating Child Oral Health in Western Australia: A Caregiver's Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic health condition among Australian preschool-aged children. Untreated, ECC can affect children's physical and emotional health and future social opportunities. ECC is largely preventable through primary caregivers' correct understanding of oral health promoting diets, oral hygiene practices and dental service engagement. The study aim is to explore Western Australian (WA) primary caregivers' child oral health knowledge, experience and practices. The Fisher-Owens socioecological model of child oral health was applied across the
