Effects of blue-green LED lights with two perceived illuminance (human and poultry) on immune performance and skeletal development of layer chickens.

Light is one of the essential environmental factors in the production process of laying hens, which can directly affect their behavior, growth and development, and production performance. The spectral sensitivity of humans is different from that of poultry, and the perceived illuminance units of human and poultry are lux and clux, respectively. If the light management of laying hen production is carried out according to human perceived illuminance, the growth and development of laying hens during pullet rearing may be adversely affected due to the discomfort of the perceived illuminance. Airbnb and neighborhood crime: The incursion of tourists or the erosion of local social dynamics?

The proliferation of internet-based home-sharing platforms like Airbnb has raised heated debates, with many in the general public believing that the presence of Airbnb listings can lead to an increase in crime and disorder in residential neighborhoods. Despite the importance of this debate to residents, policymakers, and other stakeholders, few studies have examined the causal linkage between Airbnb listings and crime in neighborhoods. We conduct the first such empirical test in Boston neighborhoods, focusing on two potential mechanisms: (1) the inflow of tourists might generate or attract cri

Transitioning into the Community: Perceptions of Barriers and Facilitators Experienced By Formerly Incarcerated, Homeless Women During Reentry-A Qualitative Study.

Formerly incarcerated, homeless women on parole or probation experience individual-and structural-level barriers and facilitators as they prepare to transition into the community during reentry. A qualitative study was undertaken using focus group methods with formerly incarcerated, currently homeless women (N = 18, Mage = 37.67, SD 10.68, 23-53 years of age) exiting jail or prison. Major themes which emerged included the following: (1) access to resources-barriers and facilitators during community transition, (2) familial reconciliation and parenting during community transition, and (3) traum

Factors Associated with Readmission Among General Internal Medicine Patients Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: People who are homeless have a higher burden of illness and higher rates of hospital admission and readmission compared to the general population. Identifying the factors associated with hospital readmission could help healthcare providers and policymakers improve post-discharge care for homeless patients. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with hospital readmission within 90 days of discharge from a general internal medicine unit among patients experiencing homelessness. DESIGN: This prospective observational study was conducted at an urban academic teaching hospital in T

Perceptions of nonopioid treatment for pain in a homeless population.

CONTEXT: Opioid abuse has developed into a public health emergency within the last decade because opioid medications, while addictive, are effective and commonly used for pain management. In 2016, over 42,000 deaths were attributed to opioids. Chronic pain affects about 50% of people experiencing homelessness in the US, and they have a higher overall rate of chronic pain than the general population; opioids are among the methods they might use to manage that pain. Complementary and alternative therapies for pain management have largely gone unexplored in the homeless population. OBJECTIVES: T

Graduation practices and outcomes in intensive case management programs for severe mental illness: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Intensive case management (ICM) is important in psychiatric rehabilitation but there is a need to "graduate" clients. The purpose of this research was to review the literature on criteria used and outcomes of graduating clients with severe mental illness from ICM programs. METHOD: A systematic review conducted in 2019 used keyword searches in all major research databases. This search yielded 1,142 articles which were distilled to 20 studies that reported a graduation process from an ICM program (11 studies), and/or reported clinical or psychosocial outcomes after graduation (15 stu

Multimorbidity among People Experiencing Homelessness-Insights from Primary Care Data.

BACKGROUND: Although the poor health of people experiencing homelessness is increasingly recognised in health discourse, there is a dearth of research that has quantified the nature and magnitude of chronic health issues and morbidity among people experiencing homelessness, particularly in the Australian context. METHODS: Analysis of the medical records of 2068 "active" patients registered with a specialist homeless health service in Perth, Western Australia as of 31 December 2019. RESULTS: Overall, 67.8% of patients had at least one chronic physical health condition, 67.5% had at least one

A Comprehensive Assessment to Enable Recovery of the Homeless: The HOP-TR Study.

Background: Homelessness is an increasing problem in Western European countries. In the Netherlands, policy reforms and austerity measures induced an urgent need for management information on local homeless citizens. Municipal authorities initiated cross-sectional reviews of Homeless Service (HS) users. The resulting Homeless People Treatment and Recovery (HOP-TR) study developed a health and needs assessment strategy over different domains to comprehensively assess individuals and care networks with the perspective on recovery. Methods: Dutch HS users were selected using a naturalistic meta-s

Do we all experience loneliness the same way? Lessons from a pilot study measuring loneliness among people with lived experience of homelessness.

Loneliness research has tended to focus on mainstream and older populations despite evidence that non-mainstream groups, like those experiencing homelessness, may experience loneliness differently. Limited existing research indicates that (a) people who have been homeless experience loneliness as multidimensional (as a pluralistic, non-unidimensional emotion, experienced specific to lacked relationships) and (b) mainstream loneliness scales may be inappropriate for this group. The current study piloted and appraised the feasibility the short version of the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale

Exploring Interventions to Improve the Oral Health and Related Health Behaviours of Adults Experiencing Severe and Multiple Disadvantage: Protocol for a Qualitative Study with Stakeholders.

The number of individuals in England experiencing homelessness, substance use, and involvement with the criminal justice system is increasing. These issues, referred to as severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD), are often interlinked and co-occur. Health inequalities, particularly poor oral health, persist for those facing these inter-related issues and are closely linked with high levels of substance use, smoking, and poor diet. However, evidence for interventions that can improve these health outcomes for those experiencing these issues is limited. This paper outlines the design of a qualita

Four Ways to Limit Use of Force in Care of Persons Experiencing Homelessness.

Experiencing homelessness is traumatizing and can exacerbate mental illnesses and substance use disorders. When persons experiencing homelessness are a danger to themselves or others, petitioning for involuntary placement is clinically, ethically, and legally indicated. The process of involuntary commitment is often traumatic and can fracture already fragile relationships that persons experiencing homeless have; involuntary commitment should be used only when necessary. It is society's obligation to prevent crises but, when needed, to support persons in crisis by responding with care to their

The little things are big: evaluation of a compassionate community approach for promoting the health of vulnerable persons.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable persons are individuals whose life situations create or exacerbate vulnerabilities, such as low income, housing insecurity and social isolation. Vulnerable people often receive a patchwork of health and social care services that does not appropriately address their needs. The cost of health and social care services escalate when these individuals live without appropriate supports. Compassionate Communities apply a population health theory of practice wherein citizens are mobilized along with health and social care supports to holistically address the needs of persons exp…

The prevalence of mental disorders among homeless people in high-income countries: An updated systematic review and meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness continues to be a pressing public health concern in many countries, and mental disorders in homeless persons contribute to their high rates of morbidity and mortality. Many primary studies have estimated prevalence rates for mental disorders in homeless individuals. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on the prevalence of any mental disorder and major psychiatric diagnoses in clearly defined homeless populations in any high-income country. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We systematically searched for observational studies that estimated prevalence rat

Extreme crowding in laying hens during a recurrent smothering outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Piling, a behaviour where hens crowd together, is referred to as smothering if mortalities result. Smothering is a considerable concern for the egg industry, yet is vastly understudied. METHODS: During an outbreak of recurrent smothering, continuous video footage captured a commercial, free-range flock over 35 days. We describe the piling behaviour observed and potential associations with productivity and flock health indicators. RESULTS: Forty-eight piles were filmed, with a maximum density of 187.93 birds/m2 and up to 1204 birds in one pile. Piling occurred in the same house lo

Understanding Dermatologic Concerns Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness: A Scoping Review and Discussion for Improved Delivery of Care.

There is a paucity of information surrounding dermatologic care for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). This scoping review aims to map existing literature and provide a summary of the most common cutaneous manifestations among PEH, risk factors for dermatologic disease, describe any reported interventions, as well as identify research gaps for future studies. Search strategies developed for MEDLINE and hand searching yielded 486 articles. Out of the 486 articles screened, 93 articles met the inclusion criteria. The majority were cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, and case-control s

Properties of conventional and alternative bedding materials for dairy cattle.

The bedding material used in barns for dairy cows has a significant effect on animal welfare and performance. Bedding influences the duration in which animals remain lying down and, consequently, the processes of rumination and milk production. It is crucial to have a complete understanding of the properties of bedding materials and the effects of alternative bedding materials on dairy cattle. This paper aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological properties of various alternative and conventional bedding materials for dairy cattle for use in compost bedded pack or freestall barn s
