Psychosocial and metabolic function by smoking status in individuals with binge eating disorder and obesity.

Individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) report smoking to control appetite and weight. Smoking in BED is associated with increased risk for comorbid psychiatric disorders, but its impact on psychosocial functioning and metabolic function has not been evaluated. Participants were 429 treatment-seeking adults (72.4% women; mean age 46.2±11.0years old) with BED comorbid with obesity. Participants were categorized into current smokers (n=66), former smokers (n=145), and never smokers (n=218). Smoking status was unrelated to most historical eating/weight variables and to current eating disorde

Serum Galectin-9 Levels Are Associated with Coronary Artery Disease in Chinese Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Recently, several studies suggest that galectin-9 (Gal-9) might play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, the exact role of Gal-9 in atherosclerosis remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Serum Gal-9, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interferon- (IFN-) γ, interleukin- (IL-) 4, IL-17, and transforming growth factor- (TGF-) β1 were measured. The effect of Gal-9 on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was investigated in patients with normal coronary artery (NCA). RESULTS: The lowest level of Gal-9 was found in the ST-segment elevation my

Understanding the experiences and needs of individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and their parents: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of SMA, which range along a spectrum of severity, are relatively well described. In contrast, the literature on how individuals with SMA and their families experience this condition is limited. To address this gap, we undertook a qualitative study with individuals affected by SMA Types I, II and III, parents of those affected, and clinicians. METHODS: We completed 16 focus group sessions and 37 interviews in the US with 96 participants including: 21 with individuals with SMA; 64 parents of individuals affected by SMA; and 11 clinicians who specialize in the c

The perceptions of individuals with anorexia nervosa regarding their family's understanding of their illness, treatment, and recovery.

The current study explores how affected individuals understand their family's perceptions of anorexia nervosa (AN). Perceptions of individuals with AN regarding their family's understanding of the illness may influence their ability to accept family support. Thematic analysis was used on qualitative data of 19 individuals with AN undergoing inpatient treatment. Participants perceived that families: (a) considered AN a problem with food rather than a mental illness; and (b) viewed treatment as time limited, and complete recovery as achievable. Family-based interventions are needed to facilitate

The Experience of Caring For or Living with an Individual with an Eating Disorder: A Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders (ED) has the highest mortality rate of psychiatric disorders and a high incidence of comorbidity. Because of the average age of onset, care typically befalls family members. However, despite the severity of the disorder and the burden placed on the family, research into the caregiving experience is still developing. Studies have shown caregivers of individuals with ED to experience high levels of distress, burden and expressed emotion. Recent theoretical models have underscored the importance of caregivers' responses as a maintenance factor for the ED, and family t

Emotion-induced loss aversion and striatal-amygdala coupling in low-anxious individuals.

Adapting behavior to changes in the environment is a crucial ability for survival but such adaptation varies widely across individuals. Here, we asked how humans alter their economic decision-making in response to emotional cues, and whether this is related to trait anxiety. Developing an emotional decision-making task for functional magnetic resonance imaging, in which gambling decisions were preceded by emotional and non-emotional primes, we assessed emotional influences on loss aversion, the tendency to overweigh potential monetary losses relative to gains. Our behavioral results revealed t

Synchronous expression of individual metacyclic variant surface glycoprotein genes in Trypanosoma brucei.

One distinctive feature of the Trypanosoma brucei life cycle is the presence of two discrete populations that are based on differential expression of variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs). Both are adapted to the environmental pressures they face and more importantly, both contribute directly to transmission. Metacyclics in the tsetse fly enable transmission to a new mammalian host, whereas bloodstream trypanosomes must avoid immune destruction to the extent that sufficient numbers are available for transmission, when the insect vector takes a blood meal. At present, there are few investigation

Infrared Thermal Analysis and Individual Differences in Skin Temperature Asymmetry in Rett Syndrome.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the feasibility of using a portable infrared thermal camera to quantify the degree of thermal dysregulation (cold hands/feet) and test for naturally occurring within-patient skin temperature asymmetry in Rett syndrome. PROCEDURES: Infrared thermal images were acquired passively from 15 patients (mean age = 13.7 years, range 4-47) with clinical diagnoses of Rett. Images were acquired using a FLIR T400 infrared thermal camera (still images recorded at 5 Hz, resolution of 320 × 240 pixels, thermal sensitivity = 0.05 °C; capture session lasted approximately 3 minutes). Self-injury among trans individuals and matched controls: prevalence and associated factors.

This study aims to determine the prevalence rate of current non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among trans individuals, in comparison with a control sample of non-trans adults. It also aims to compare those with current NSSI and those with no history of NSSI in terms of psychological well-being, self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, social support and demographic factors. Participants were 97 adults, diagnosed with transsexualism (ICD-10, F64.0), attending a national gender clinic in the United Kingdom, and a matched control group. Clinical participants were all engaged on the treatment pathway. Par

Surgical threshold for bicuspid aortic valve aneurysm: a case for individual decision-making.

The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) affects 1-2% of the population and may be associated with important valvular disease and an increased risk of aortic root and/or ascending aortic aneurysm and dissection. BAV aortic aneurysm and dissection occur earlier in life than when these disorders are associated with a tricuspid aortic valve (TAV). Alterations in the aortic media and differences in aortic elastic properties and wall stress also accompany BAV aortopathy. With appropriate follow-up and timely surgery, population studies have documented a survival rate for patients with BAV no different from

Roles of peripheral B1 cells in the individualized treatment of adult idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

We aimed to explore the changes of peripheral B1 cells before and after treatment of adult idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and to investigate the association of these changes with the disease condition and prognosis. Ninety-seven ITP patients were divided into the effective or ineffective groups, based on their response to hormone therapy. Forty healthy volunteers were enrolled into the control group (HC). The percentages of CD19+ cells, B1 cells, and platelet-associated immunoglobulin (PAIg) in peripheral blood from healthy volunteers and ITP patients before and after treatment were

Hot Topics in Primary Care: Individualizing Pharmacologic Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder with constipation, diarrhea, and mixed subtypes. The diagnosis is generally based on a detailed history utilizing the Rome III criteria. Alarm signals necessitate more extensive diagnostic evaluation. Nonpharmacologic options and over-the-counter remedies (e.g., loperamide) might not be supported by strong evidence, but are often chosen as initial treatment for their safety and tolerability. Psychological interventions may be beneficial. Newer pharmacologic agents such as alosetron, eluxadoline, linaclotide, lubiprostone, and rifax

Living with invisible illness: social support experiences of individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: Because symptoms are not immediately visible to others, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often considered an invisible illness. This invisibility can reduce the social support received from network members and adversely affect the quality of life. In the light of this, social support from formal support groups and from medical professionals can be particularly important; however, literature examining support from these sources is scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and impact of social support from medical professionals and from support groups for individu

Key Stakeholders' Perceptions of Motivators for Research Participation Among Individuals Who Are Incarcerated.

Understanding motivations of research participants is crucial for developing ethical research protocols, especially for research with vulnerable populations. Through interviews with 92 institutional review board members, prison administrators, research ethicists, and researchers, we explored key stakeholders' perceptions of what motivates incarcerated individuals to participate in research. Primary motivators identified were a desire to contribute to society, gaining knowledge and health care, acquiring incentives, and obtaining social support. The potential for undue influence or coercion wer

Factors Associated with Community Participation among Individuals Who Have Experienced Homelessness.

Community participation is an important goal for people who have experienced homelessness. The aim of this study was to use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a framework to examine factors associated with community participation among people who are homeless or recently housed through housing programs. Participants (n = 120) recruited from six housing placement and search programs completed measures of community participation (including productivity, social and leisure, and community-services-use domains), psychiatric and physical symptoms, functio

Psychosocial functioning of individuals with schizophrenia in community housing facilities and the psychiatric hospital in Zurich.

Individuals with severe mental illness frequently have difficulties in obtaining and maintaining adequate accommodation. If they are not willing or able to adapt to requirements of traditional supported housing institutions they may live in sheltered and emergency accommodation. Adequate mental health services are rarely available in these facilities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate mental health, functional and social status of individuals living in community sheltered housing facilities. A cross-sectional survey of n=338 individuals in sheltered housing compared to a sample of p

Exploring communication and interaction skills at work among participants in individual placement and support.

BACKGROUND: Not all people with severe mental illness who attend Individual Placement and Support (IPS) gain and keep their jobs or work full time. Research has indicated a relationship between social disabilities and work performance in this group, and that support provided is often directed towards the social work environment. However, relationships between social skills performed in an authentic work setting and vocational outcomes have not been explored. OBJECTIVES: To explore relationships between social communication and interaction skills and vocational outcomes among IPS service users
