Validation of the NULL-EASE Score for Predicting Survival in a Multiethnic Asian Cohort of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: NULL-PLEASE is a simple and accurate clinical scoring system developed in a Western cohort of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The need for blood test results limits its use in early stages of care. We adapted and validated the NULL-EASE score (without laboratory tests) in an independent, multiethnic Asian cohort of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using the Singapore OHCA registry, we included consecutive adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest who survived to hospital admission between April 2010 to December 2020.

Clinical and Laboratory Predictors of Poor Outcomes in Pediatric Cerebral Malaria in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebral malaria remains poorly understood despite being a common manifestation of severe malaria in children, often associated with poor outcomes. We sought to describe the burden of childhood cerebral malaria and identify factors predictive of poor hospitalization outcomes (death and neurological outcomes) and short-term neurological sequelae. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of children diagnosed with cerebral malaria at a tertiary hospital in northwestern Nigeria from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2022. We retrieved relevant information, including hospitalization o

Risk of COVID-19 Hospitalization and Protection Associated With mRNA Vaccination Among US Adults With Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although psychiatric disorders have been associated with reduced immune responses to other vaccines, it remains unknown whether they influence COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study evaluated risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and estimated mRNA VE stratified by psychiatric disorder status. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort analysis of the VISION Network in four US states, the rate of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19-associated hospitalization between December 2021 and August 2022 was compared across psychiatric diagnoses and by monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination status usi

Acute kidney injury and its associated factors among patients with acute decompensated heart failure admitted to the university of Gondar Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure often leads to hospitalization and can directly impact other organs, such as the kidneys. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in patients hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and is associated with worse outcomes. However, there are limited data on the magnitude of AKI among hospitalized ADHF patients in resource-limited settings such as Ethiopia. This study sought to determine the prevalence of AKI and the factors associated with AKI in ADHF patients in Northwest Ethiopia. METHOD: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conduct

Association Between Rome Classification Among Hospitalized Patients With COPD Exacerbations and Short-Term and Intermediate-Term Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the Rome proposal updated the definition of exacerbation of COPD (ECOPD). However, such severity grade has not yet demonstrated intermediate-term clinical relevance. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the association between the Rome severity classification and short-term and intermediate-term clinical outcomes? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively grouped hospitalized patients with ECOPD according to the Rome severity classification (ie, mild, moderate, severe). Baseline, clinical, microbiologic, gas analysis, and laboratory variables were collected. In addition, data

Systemic Coagulation Inflammation Index Associated With Bleeding in Acute Coronary Syndrome.

AIM: Assessment of the inflammatory component of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and the degree of activation of the coagulation cascade may provide prognostic information. The systemic coagulation-inflammation index (SCI) assesses both inflammation and the coagulation system, and it has also been found to be associated with clinical outcomes. We investigated the relationship between SCI and in-hospital clinical events (acute kidney injury, cardiogenic shock, life-threatening arrhythmia, bleeding) and mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 396 patients aged ≥18 yrs who were hospita
