In-Office Hyaluronate Injection Laryngoplasty as Palliative Treatment for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Voice and swallowing impairments can impact on both quality of life and survival. Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) as a result of distant metastasis can cause breathy voice and aspiration. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a less invasive and effective alternative therapy for UVFP. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of prospectively enrolled patients at a tertiary referral center in Taiwan. Among a cohort of 177 patients who received intracordal hyaluronate injections, 2 had UVFP from distant metastasis and met the inclusion criteria. Vocal cord moti

Atypical Presentation of a Common Disease: Shingles of the Larynx.

OBJECTIVE: Herpes zoster is a neurocutaneous disease resulting from the reactivation of endogenous varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in dorsal sensory or cranial nerve ganglia. Rarely, this infection manifests without the characteristic dermatomal rash, a condition termed zoster sine herpete. Viral spreading of herpes zoster in the head and neck may manifest as various signs and symptoms because of the multiple possible combinations of cranial neuropathies. With only six cases reported in the English literature up to now, isolated neuropathies of the vagus nerve in the absence of cutaneous lesions

Neuromonitoring of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery.

Changes of the voice caused by injury of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) during thyroid surgery may have essential consequences for a patient's life. Therefore, intraoperative effort has to be made to prevent EBSLN damage. Neuromonitoring has already been described as helpful to improve the identification rate of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We describe our surgical procedure of upper thyroid pole preparation using neuromonitoring to avoid intraoperative damage of the superior laryngeal nerve. Neuromonitoring allowed safe preparation of the upper thyroid pole with

Comparison of preoperative computed tomographic findings with postoperative histopathological findings in laryngeal cancers.

In this study of 22 patients with laryngeal cancer, computed tomographic (CT) scans in the axial plane were compared with histopathological sections prepared in the same plane. The value of the preoperative CT for evaluating tumor invasion, location and size was then investigated. Findings demonstrated that CT was most sensitive in determining tumor invasion to the paralaryngeal and preepiglottic spaces, anterior and posterior commissures and subglottis. In contrast, CT was less sensitive in determining actual tumor invasion to the laryngeal cartilages, extralaryngeal tissues and metastases to

Resolution of vocal fold immobility in preterm infants.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal fold immobility (VFI) is an important sequela of preterm birth due to patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation and invasive ventilation. A minority of these patients experience VFI resolution. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with VFI resolution in preterm infants. METHODS: This is a case control study of preterm (<37 weeks gestation) infants admitted to a metropolitan Level IV neonatal intensive care unit from 2006 to 2012. All patients diagnosed with VFI by flexible nasolaryngoscopy were divided into 2 cohorts: those with and without laryngosco…
