Cardiac mesenchymal cells from failing and nonfailing hearts limit ventricular dilation when administered late after infarction.

Although cell therapy-mediated cardiac repair offers promise for treatment/management of heart failure, lack of fundamental understanding of how cell therapy works limits its translational potential. In particular, whether reparative cells from failing hearts differ from cells derived from nonfailing hearts remains unexplored. Here, we assessed differences between cardiac mesenchymal cells (CMC) derived from failing (HF) versus nonfailing (Sham) hearts and whether the source of donor cells (i.e., from HF vs. Sham) limits reparative capacity, particularly when administered late after infarction

Evaluation using a four-dimensional imaging tool before and after pulmonary valve replacement in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary regurgitation is a common complication after tetralogy of Fallot repair, resulting in right ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmia, and sudden death. However, the indications and optimal timing for pulmonary valve replacement are not fully known. We describe a case in which a four-dimensional imaging tool was useful in the decision to re-operate, thus resulting in decreased energy loss and improved right ventricular function after the re-operation for tetralogy of Fallot. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old Japanese woman visited our hospital due to palpitations and wide QRS t

The multiple systemic artery to pulmonary artery fistulas resulting in severe irreversible pulmonary arterial hypertension in patient with previous history of pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: Systemic artery to pulmonary artery fistulas (SA-PAFs), are extremely rare in people without congenital heart disease. In this group of patients pulmonary arterial hypertension was reported in the single case. Then, we describe a case of multiple SA-PAFs, which were the cause of severe nonreversible arterial pulmonary hypertension in a patient who had a right-sided pneumothorax 35 years earlier. CASE PRESENTATION: 52-year-old male Caucasian patient with echocardiographically confirmed pulmonary hypertension (PH) was admitted to cardiology department due to exertional dyspnea and s

Brain and spinal cord lesion criteria distinguishes AQP4-positive neuromyelitis optica and MOG-positive disease from multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Test the ability of a brain and spinal cord MRI criteria to differentiate neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and MOG-disease from MS. MRI criteria was further tested in patients with CIS and pediatric MS. BACKGROUND: MOG-disease and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders can present clinical and radiological features strikingly similar to those of MS. Previously, diagnostic criteria based on brain MRI have been proposed to distinguish between these demyelinating diseases (Matthews-Jurynczik criteria), but spinal cord imaging and its relevance in CIS have not been evaluated. The Amigo™ Remote Catheter System: From Concept to Bedside.

Radiation exposure is a serious concern during fluoroscopic procedures, including electrophysiology (EP) studies and radiofrequency catheter ablation of arrhythmias. Operators typically don lead aprons to protect themselves from radiation, but wearing lead can result in greater fatigue and orthopedic injury during long procedures. To address this problem, two robotic catheter systems (RCS) have previously been introduced on the market, the Niobe® (Stereotaxis Inc., St. Louis, MO, USA) and Sensei® X (Hansen Medical, Inc., Mountain View, CA, USA) systems. However, the widespread adoption of thes

Improvement in clinical outcomes following optimal targeting of brain ventricular catheters with intraoperative imaging.

OBJECT: The accurate placement of cerebral ventricular shunt catheters in hydrocephalus is an important clinical problem. Malfunction of shunts remains their most common complication and greatest liability, and the influence of catheter position on shunt function remains poorly defined. The objectives of this study were as follows: 1) determine the accuracy of intraventricular catheter placement with respect to a historically favored target, defined as a 1-cm radius sphere at the anterior lip of the ipsilateral foramen of Monro; 2) confirm that this target represents a satisfactory site for fr

Leptin deficiency per se dictates body composition and insulin action in ob/ob mice.

Obese humans are often insulin- and leptin resistant. Since leptin can affect glucose metabolism, it is conceivable that a lack of leptin signal transduction contributes to insulin resistance. It remains unclear whether leptin affects glucose metabolism via peripheral and/or central mechanistic routes. In the present study, we aimed: (i) to determine the relative contributions of lack of leptin signal transduction and adiposity to insulin resistance and (ii) to establish the impact of central leptin action on glucose metabolism. To address the first point, ob/ob mice were subjected to severe c

Activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels prevents the cleavage of cytosolic mu-calpain and abrogates the elevation of nuclear c-Fos and c-Jun expressions after hypoxic-ischemia in neonatal rat brain.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether activation of ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channels with diazoxide (DIZ) is able to prevent the cleavage of cytosolic mu-calpain and abrogate the elevation of nuclear c-Fos and c-Jun protein (c-Fos, c-Jun) expressions after hypoxic-ischemia (HI) in brain. The model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) was made in the 7-day-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats by left carotid arterial ligation and hypoxia (8% oxygen). DIZ was injected into the left lateral ventricle (5 microl, 1 mg/ml) before or post-hypoxic-ischemia (HI) insults. Western blot and comput

Central effects of endothelin and its antagonists on sympathetic and cardiovascular regulation in SHR-SP.

Intracerebroventricular injections of endothelin-1 (ET-1) are reported to cause dose-related increases in sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure in anesthetized normotensive rats. These studies were performed to determine the following: which endothelin receptor, A or B, is involved in mediating sympathetic and cardiovascular effects of ET-1 injected centrally; whether central endothelin tonically participates in blood pressure regulation in normotensive rats; and whether the altered endothelin system in the central nervous system contributes to blood pressure elevation in hypertensive
