Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare parasitic disease caused by the intrahepatic growth of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae. Secondary localizations can be observed; pulmonary metastases are the most frequent and are observed in 22% of patients. Other extrahepatic localizations are less frequent. We describe two patients with abdominal skin involvement. To our knowledge, this has never before been reported. In both patients, the liver lesion was located in the left lobe, and larvae probably spread to the skin via the falciform ligament. In one patient albendazole therapy was effective.

To evaluate the effect of donor age on graft and patient outcome after liver transplantation an analysis of a large-scale cohort study was performed at three tertiary referral liver transplant centers. Between April 1990 and June 1994, 772 adults underwent an initial single-organ liver transplantation. p53 expression was studied by immunohistochemical methods in benign and malignant human epithelial liver lesions in 46 patients from Hungary. Positive immunostaining for p53 protein, indicating the overexpression or prolonged half-life of p53 protein, was detected in the nuclei of tumour cells of seven of the 16 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) (44%), including three HCC patients with hepatitis B virus infection. Undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma of the liver is a rare hepatic tumor with reputed poor prognosis. Seven patients with situs inversus abdominis and one with situs inversus totalis underwent liver transplantation; all are alive at follow-up of between 7 months and 5 years. Liver transplantation remains difficult in end-stage liver disease caused by chronic viral hepatitis because of recurrent viral infection in the liver graft.
