Basement membrane proteins laminin, type IV collagen and aminoterminal propeptide of type III collagen (type III pN-collagen) are important components of extracellular matrix of normal lymph nodes; they are present in reticular fibres and in the walls of blood vessels and sinuses. An analysis of the plain film changes of the jaws in 51 histologically confirmed cases of Burkitt's lymphoma was carried out. In tumours confined clinically to the jaws there was a 91% incidence of effacement of the dental lamina dura while in tumours confined clinically to the abdomen there was an incidence of 72.7%. When tumour deposits were clinically present in more than one anatomical site, almost all cases showed effacement of the dental lamina dura. These findings emphasise the need for jaw radiographs to reinforce the diagnosis in suspected cases of Burkitt's lymphoma.

One hundred twenty-six patients with the diagnosis of lymphoma underwent staging with both lymphangiography and computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis. These patients were retrospectively studied to determine the optimal imaging modality for follow-up. A pathological study was carried out on 124 cases of primary gastric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in Japan. Macroscopically the cases were divided into three groups; flat, polypoid, and ulcerative types. Early lymphomas were distinguished from advanced by the depth of infiltration. When immunophenotyping is used for diagnosis, it is essential to use panels of antibodies, rather than a single marker for a specific tumor type. There is virtually no single marker that is absolutely diagnostic and completely reliable for any particular neoplasm. In connection with a recent observation of laryngeal lymphoma, we have looked through the literature and listed 79 cases. Preferentially, these are male subjects over fifty years of age. The symptoms are slowly progressive dyspnea and unilateral otalgia. We present markedly decreased radioactivity in the right on a 99mTc-pertechnetate thyroid image in a patient with secondary lymphoma of the thyroid. At autopsy, the right lobe of the thyroid was replaced by lymphoma tissue. Two homosexual men presented with primary malignant lymphomas of the anorectum. Each patient presented with a painful mass, diagnosed by biopsy and immunologic cell marker studies. A patient presented with superior vena caval obstruction caused by a tumour which resembled carcinoma of the lung both clinically and histologically. However, immunologic and cytogenetic analyses carried out on the mediastinal biopsy and on pleural fluid revealed that the tumour was of B cell origin, Burkitt-like in sub-type, and had the t(8;14) translocation. The nature of many poorly differentiated tumours may be more clearly identified with the help of immunological and cytogenetic analyses.

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas and leukemias have distinct histological and cytological characteristics although there are a variety of histological patterns even in a single lymph node. Histologic features are altered by the progression of the disease. There is no significant association between histology and prognosis. In six patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), the effect of leukapheresis (LPH) on the disease and on various immunological and haematological parameters was investigated. Forty-one cases of T cell lymphoma were identified on the basis of morphology and the expression of two or more T cell antigens with an absence of B cell markers. Mycosis fungoides and lymphoblastic lymphoma were excluded. Marked clinical, morphological, and immunologic diversity was observed. The records of 25 pediatric patients with mediastinal nonlymphoblastic lymphoma (NLBL) were reviewed. These patients comprise approximately 5% of all patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in the pediatric age group. There were 15 females and ten males. A new anthracycline analog, epirubicin (4'-epi-Adriamycin) was evaluated at eleven institutes in a phase II clinical study in patients with malignant lymphoma. Epirubicin was administered intravenously mainly with using the following two regimens; 50 to 60 mg/m2 every three weeks and 40 mg/m2 weekly. A total of 46 cases were entered into the study and 41 cases were evaluable. Alkaline phosphatase (AP) and gamma glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) were studied in normal lymphoid cells and in 28 cases of human lymphomas (23 of non-Hodgkin's and 5 of Hodgkin's disease).
