Conventional versus endoscopic-assisted crestal sinus lifting with simultaneous implant placement: a comparative clinical study.

PATIENTS: Twenty patients with residual bone heights of 4-7 mm in the posterior maxilla were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 (conventional crestal approach) and Group 2 (endoscopic-assisted crestal approach). A 2.7 mm rigid endoscope was used to monitor membrane integrity after each surgical step. Bone grafting with a xenograft-platelet-rich fibrin mix was performed, followed by implant placement. Membrane perforation rates, surgical time, and bone density changes were evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-two implants were placed (11 in each group). Membrane perforation occurred in 33% of cas

Impact of Membrane Thickening and Perforation on Graft Remodeling After Osteotome Sinus Elevation: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the impact of sinus membrane thickening and perforation on graft remodeling following osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 136 patients who received single implants with simultaneous OSFE were retrospectively analyzed and categorized based on preoperative sinus membrane thickness: membrane thickening (MT; > 2 mm, n = 38) and normal thickness (NT; ≤ 2 mm, n = 98). Cone-beam computed tomography was used to assess residual bone height and membrane thickness. Periapical radiographs obtained immediately postoperatively (T1)

Full Regeneration of Maxillary Alveolar Bone Using Autogenous Partially Demineralized Dentin Matrix and Particulate Cancellous Bone and Marrow for Implant-Supported Full Arch Rehabilitation.

Autogenous partially demineralized dentin matrix (APDDM) has been reportedly used as a superior bone graft material. A 52-year-old Japanese man who exhibited severe periodontitis was referred for oral rehabilitation. He underwent wide-range anterior maxillary alveolar bone and bilateral sinus floor augmentation by grafting of a mixture of APDDM and particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM); subsequently, he underwent implant-supported full arch rehabilitation. He has been followed up for 4 years after placement of the final restoration without any complications, and his physiological bone

Extra-Short Implants with Osteotome Sinus Floor Elevation: A Prospective Clinical Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the radiographic and clinical outcomes of extra-short implants either alone or in conjunction with osteotome sinus floor elevation and to compare these with regular-sized implants in the posterior atrophic maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systemically healthy, nonsmoker individuals having at least one tooth gap in the posterior maxilla were included in the study. When the residual bone height was < 4 mm, an extra-short implant (4 to 6 mm) in conjunction with osteotome sinus floor elevation was placed; when the residual bone height was between 4 and

Biphasic calcium phosphate and polymer-coated bovine bone matrix for sinus grafting in an animal model.

Autogenous bone grafting requires a donor site and may lose substantial volume during remodeling. Several bone replacement materials (BRMs) … d. Two experimental sites on each side of the animals were prepared using an extraoral approach for maxillary sinus wall. The four treatments were performed in each animal through a standardized 10-mm access window. While the BBM access was covered with a collagen membrane, all other sites were closed with an equine collagen membrane. All animals were euthanized …

Sinus Floor Elevation Using the Lateral Approach and Window Repositioning and a Xenogeneic Bone Substitute as a Grafting Material: A Histologic, Histomorphometric, and Radiographic Analysis.

PURPOSE: Sinus floor elevation using the lateral approach and bone window repositioning and a xenogeneic bone substitute (Cerabone) has been well documented clinically. The purpose of this histologic and histomorphometric study was to determine the fate of the window, its contributing role in the healing process, and the osseoconductivity and resorption potential of the high-temperature sintered bovine bone used, as well as to correlate the histomorphometric results with sinus depth and lateral wall thickness as determined on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty

Crestal Sinus Floor Augmentation Using Hydraulic Pressure and Vibrations: A Retrospective Single Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sinus membrane perforation and implant survival rate after crestal minimally invasive sinus floor augmentation using hydraulic pressure and vibrations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single cohort study, all patients who underwent minimally invasive sinus floor augmentation between 2007 and 2015 using hydraulic pressure and vibrations were included. The sinus membrane is elevated by physiologic saline at 1.5 bar. The fluid is then set into vibration to further separate the sinus membrane from the bony floor. The endpoints were sinus membrane perforation

Stability of Grafted Implant Placement Sites After Sinus Floor Elevation Using a Layering Technique: 10-Year Clinical and Radiographic Results.

PURPOSE: To evaluate long-term survival rates and radiographic stability of sinus floor elevations carried out using a two-layer grafting technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records were analyzed for patients treated with sinus floor elevations using a modified technique. Phycogenic hydroxyapatite (Algipore, Dentsply Sirona Implants) and autogenous bone particles harvested from intraoral sites were grafted in two distinct layers after elevation of the sinus mucosae. In this approach, the basal part of the sinus floor is grafted with autogenous bone, while the cranial part is grafted with the ph

Infraorbital ethmoid (Haller's) cells: a panoramic radiographic study.

OBJECTIVE: Haller's cells or infraorbital ethmoid cells refer to the ethmoidal pneumatization of the superior aspect of the maxillary sinus and floor of the orbit. The clinical importance of these entities initiated this study with an aim to determine the prevalence and characteristics of Haller's cells on panoramic radiographs. METHODS: The study group comprised 600 healthy adults of both genders with an age range of 18-60 years. One panoramic radiograph for each of the patients was made and interpreted for the presence of Haller's cells. The data collected were subjected to statistical anal…

Balanced orbital decompression for Graves' ophthalmopathy.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Surgical management of Graves' ophthalmopathy is an alternative to medical therapy with corticosteroids or external beam radiotherapy. Orbital decompression has commonly been performed via a transantral approach to the medial orbital wall and floor. Although an endoscopic approach to these walls has been described, a balanced approach (incorporating a lateral decompression by an ophthalmology team) is desirable. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. METHODS: Endoscopic medial decompression and extended lateral decompression were accomplished in 18 orbits (11 patients); in

Teary eyes due to 21 pence?

A woman in her late 70s with chronic bilateral epiphora under ophthalmology review was referred to our department for dacryocystorhinostomy after punctoplasty and detection of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses for preoperative planning revealed complete opacification of the right maxillary, anterior ethmoid, frontal and sphenoid sinuses, left septal deviation and an incidental finding of foreign bodies in the right anterior nasal airspace. She proceeded with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and removal of foreign bodies. To our surprise, a partially er

Ocular and perineal squamous cell carcinomas in a Holstein Friesian cow.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in domestic cattle is an economically significant malignant neoplasm and has been documented primarily in ocular and periocular tissues, vulva, and perineum. SCCs are often slow-growing and locally invasive, but metastasis is uncommon. Increased risk of developing SCC has been predominantly associated with high levels of sunlight exposure and hypopigmentation (skin and conjunctiva). This manuscript reports a case of ocular and perineal SCC in a Holstein Friesian cow with maxillary sinusitis secondary to tumor invasion. CASE DESCRIPTION: An approximate…

A rare location of angiofibroma in the inferior turbinate in young woman.

Introduction Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm in the nasopharynx. The tumor tends to be locally aggressive and is typically seen in adolescent boys. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have been reported sporadically in the literature. They most commonly originate from the maxillary sinus. Objectives A 26-year-old woman was referred to our clinic with intermittent epistaxis from the right nasal passage for the previous 2 months. Maxillofacial magnetic resonance imaging showed a lobular, contoured mass originating from the right inferior turbinate and hanging in the …
