COVID-19 and First Responder Social Workers: An Unexpected Mental Health Storm.

COVID-19 has disproportionally affected people living in poverty; new immigrants; and those living in healthcare settings (hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes), shelters, detention centers, and prisons. The pandemic has also significantly impacted social workers who face hidden mental health consequences. The resultant feelings and behaviors are similar to disaster-induced trauma, including excessive rumination, hypervigilance, exhaustion, and excessive crying as a result of the adrenaline-driven fight-or-flight response. This article aims to provide information for social workers to protect

Shades of health: Skin color, ethnicity, and mental health among Black Americans.

Skin color is an important predictor of health outcomes among Black Americans. Black Americans with darker complexions experience worse physical and psychological functioning than those with lighter complexions. However, most research on the health effects of colorism focuses solely on African Americans, omitting the experiences of other Black subpopulations. Using data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), we investigate the relationship between skin color and mental health among African Americans (N = 3393) and Caribbean Blacks (N = 1378). Findings from multivariate logistic regr

Parents with intellectual disability and mental health conditions: Early intervention providers' perceptions.

BACKGROUND: It is highly recommended that professionals promote caregivers' capacity-building to use intervention strategies to support children with developmental delays or disabilities in natural learning environments, particularly in the earliest years of life. There is a gap, however, in understanding the extent to which these professionals may feel supported in tailoring outreach to support parents with Intellectual Disability and/or mental health conditions (MHCs). METHODS: We surveyed providers (n = 55) who work with families of infants and toddlers in Early Intervention programs acros

Premature mortality of people with severe mental illness: a renewed focus for a new era.

This perspective article applies public health principles to improve the physical health of selected populations with mental disorders. Two preventable adverse outcomes, poorer physical health and premature mortality, are described across mental disorders. Evidence of the lifetime effects of adverse childhood experiences and inequalities is presented: these are the 'causes of the causes'. Seven drivers of physical disorders are illustrated that drive preventable deaths and as doctors, psychiatrists must lead from the front to reverse rising mortality. Evidence supports universal and selective

Metacognitions in Patients With Frequent Mental Disorders After Diagnosis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental disorders, particularly adjustment disorder (AD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) is increased in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, it is unclear which pathogenic mechanisms determine their development and could therefore be targeted in prevention or therapeutic interventions. Here, we assessed metacognitions in a sample of PAH patients with and without MDD and PD. Moreover, we reconstructed the course of mental illnesses following the PAH diagnosis. METHODS: Two hundred seventeen PAH patients were includ

Contextual Parameters Associated with Positive and Negative Mental Health in Recreational Psychedelic Users.

Growing research exploring the utility of psychedelic substances suggests that they not only hold promise for clinical practice but may enhance mental health through recreational use as well. However, given the importance of set and setting for maximizing benefits and minimizing harms of drug use, it is important to develop a foundational understanding of the contextual factors associated with positive and negative mental health in psychedelic users. Accordingly, data were collected using an internet-based survey of psychedelic drug users (n = 511). Hierarchical regression analyses were used t

A new angle on mental rotation ability in transgender men: Modulation by ovarian milieu.

Organizational/activational theory posits that transgender individuals should perform in the direction of their gender, not their sex, on cognitive tasks that show sex differences-the largest of which are observed on visuospatial tasks. Yet, tests of this hypothesis have been mixed for transgender men (TM). One possible reason is that performance shifts associated with the hormonal milieu at testing have not been fully considered in TM. Although "activating" influences, like gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), are well-characterized in this population, endogenous ones, like ovarian cyclin

From the Defense Health Board: Military Accessions and the Continuum of Mental Health Research.

The Defense Health Board conducted a year-long examination of mental health accession screening and related issues. In its August 2020 report, Examination of Mental Health Accession Screening: Predictive Value of Current Measures and Processes, the Board recommends a paradigm shift in how mental health impacts on readiness are understood and addressed. This shift can only occur with the development and implementation of a research plan that follows cohorts of military personnel from recruitment through their military career. The following article describes this research plan as an excerpt of t

The Broken Promise of Institutional Psychiatry: Sexuality, Women and Mental Illness in 1950s Lebanon.

This article traces the case of Hala, a woman chronic patient of the Lebanon Hospital for Mental and Nervous Disorders (LHMND) in late 1950s Lebanon. Her story reveals a conglomeration of actors, expertise and technologies that regulated both her sexuality and mental illness, as she was moved, returned, then moved again, from the care of the family to the care of the psychiatric institution. By reconstructing an ethnographic case of the story of Hala, the article tackles an under-investigated area of research at the intersection of subjectivity, sexuality, psychiatry and family life. The case

Life-space Mobility in Older Men: The Role of Perceived Physical and Mental Fatigability.

BACKGROUND: Physical performance and fatigue can limit mobility within the larger environment (life-space mobility). It is unknown whether perceived fatigability, self-reported fatigue anchored to activity intensity and duration, is independently associated with life-space. METHODS: We assessed this cross-sectionally in Visit 4 (2014-2016) of the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS; N = 1 672, Age: Mean = 84.2 ± 4.0 years). The Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale (PFS, range: 0-50; higher = greater fatigability) measured physical (Mean = 16.1 ± 9.4) and mental fatigability (Mean = 7.5 ± 7.9).

The mental health of university students in South Africa: Results of the national student survey.

BACKGROUND: We estimate 30-day prevalence of 11 common mental disorders among a representative sample of university students in South Africa and explore disparities in student mental health across historically segregated institutions and marginalised groups. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected in self-report surveys of students (n = 28,268) from 17 universities were weighted to adjust for differences in survey responses. Poisson regression was used to estimate risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: Prevalence estimates were highest (21.0-24.5 %) for two anxiety disorders (social anxiety disorder, P

The Disproportionate Mental Health Burden Among Incarcerated Transgender and Gender Diverse People.

This article examines the distribution of self-reported mental health conditions and clinical contact among incarcerated transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals compared to cisgender women and men. Data are derived from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates. Results indicate that TGD respondents report more mental health symptoms, conditions, and clinical contact than their cisgender counterparts. The findings have important implications for the mental health disadvantages experienced by TGD people currently in prison.

Predictors of mental health deterioration from pre- to post-COVID-19 outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Mental health was only modestly affected in adults during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic on the group level, but interpersonal variation was large. AIMS: We aim to investigate potential predictors of the differences in changes in mental health. METHOD: Data were aggregated from three Dutch ongoing prospective cohorts with similar methodology for data collection. We included participants with pre-pandemic data gathered during 2006-2016, and who completed online questionnaires at least once during lockdown in The Netherlands between 1 April and 15 May 2020. Prevalence, correlates, and mental health burden associated with homelessness in U.S. military veterans.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a major public health problem among U.S. military veterans. However, contemporary, population-based data on the prevalence, correlates, and mental health burden of homelessness among veterans are lacking. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative survey of veterans (n = 4069). Analyses examined the prevalence and correlates of homelessness, as well as the independent associations between homelessness and current probable psychiatric conditions, suicidality, and functioning. RESULTS:

Housing instability and mental health among renters in the michigan recession and recovery study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether housing instability-inclusive of eviction, homelessness, moving in with others, moving for cost reasons, or frequent moves-is associated with mental health among renters in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007-09. STUDY DESIGN: A panel survey study. METHODS: We used data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study (2009-10, 2011 and 2013), a population-representative sample of working-aged adults, and logistic regression with propensity score weights to examine the association between housing instability over a year and a half and anxiety attack or de

Legal, mental health and psychosocial outcomes of the RePresent Games: a quasi-experimental study.

This study evaluated a pair of video games called the RePresent games that taught users how to represent themselves in civil court. A quasi-experimental study was conducted that compared 69 RePresent game users and 78 non-game users with civil legal issues across four U.S. states on legal, mental health and psychosocial outcomes over 3 months. The results revealed that RePresent game users reported greater legal knowledge, better mental health and higher quality of life than non-game users across time, and a greater rate of improvement in legal knowledge than non-game users over time. These fi
