[Clinical features of essential tremor].

UNLABELLED: Essential tremor is a dominant hereditary disorder with incomplete penetration manifested in action, postural tremor with no signs of parkinsonism, cerebellar lesions or other neurological signs [1]. The diagnosis of essential tremor is established on the basis of the clinical picture, and is greatly variable and insufficiently defined [5]. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study concerned patients with the diagnosis of essential tremor established by the International Association for Tremor Studies in 1995 where tremor was classified into definite++, possible and probable [6]. Advancing Parkinson's disease detection through multi-dimensional machine learning: a comprehensive framework using wearable movement sensor analytics.

BACKGROUND: wearable movement sensor technology shows promise for objective assessment of Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms, but optimal machine learning approaches and feature sets for accurate PD detection remain unclear. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of classification algorithms, feature contributions, and optimization techniques for PD detection using wearable movement sensor data. METHODS: We compared twelve diverse machine learning classifiers on motion sensor data, conducted systematic feature ablation studies across statistical, frequency-domain, dynamic, and co

The difference in the upper trapezius deep fascia slides between individuals with and without myofascial pain syndrome: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: MPS is a chronic disorder caused by myofascial trigger points, leading to pain and limited neck movements due to impacted fascia. Studies have reported reduced fascia slides in chronic low back pain, but limited fascia slides in MPS patients are still unreported. AIM: We determined differences in upper trapezius' deep fascia slides between MPS and non-MPS participants. METHODS: Between January-August 2019, participants from diverse work sectors were recruited in Manila. An expert physiotherapist diagnosed MPS, while non-MPS participants performed full painless cervical movement

A novel fluoroscopic method for multidimensional evaluation of swallowing function.

OBJECTIVE: Dynamic videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is used to investigate swallowing movements. However, it requires prolonged radiation exposure and mainly provides qualitative information. Herein, we present a multi-dimensional method for analyzing swallowing based on a pulsed, low-dose fluoroscopy technique that uses serial-shot images and evaluates the size, position, and temporal profile of the bolus to obtain a more comprehensive and realistic analysis of swallowing movements. METHODS: Fifteen healthy adults drank two liquids: 20mL of pure water followed by 20mL of contrast mediu

Reorganization of vibrissal motor representation following severing and repair of the facial nerve in adult rats.

This study examined the ability of adult rat motor cortex to reorganize its relationship with the somatic musculature following the severing and regeneration of a motor nerve. For this purpose experiments were performed on ten male albino rats where the facial nerve on one side was severed, sutured and allowed to regenerate for 6 months. Cortical motor output organization was assessed by mapping the vibrissal movement area extension and thresholds evoked by intracortical electrical stimulation in anesthetized rats. In all ten animals, the cortical output pattern of the motor cortex contralater

An adaptive fMRI paradigm of direction-specific, time-critical grip-force transitions.

Rapid transitions between force states, including fast increases and rapid releases, are fundamental to voluntary movement and everyday object interaction. Converging evidence from movement disorders suggests that rapid force reduction can be disproportionately impaired relative to force production, motivating the hypothesis that these transition directions rely on partly distinct control mechanisms. Brain imaging studies suggest direction-sensitive neural contributions, but existing paradigms make it difficult to determine whether differences between force production and force reduction refle…

The Median Preoptic Nucleus is a Key Site for Estradiol Regulation of Sleep-Wake Behaviors in Females Rats.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Women experience more sleep disruptions than men, particularly during hormonal transitions such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. This study investigated the role of estradiol (E2) in regulating sleep-wake behavior in female rats and identified the brain regions involved. METHODS: Using an exogenous E2 replacement model in ovariectomized rats, we assessed changes in sleep-wake patterns via EEG/EMG telemetry. The effects of E2 and progesterone, selective estrogen receptor agonists, and direct brain infusions of E2 and receptor antagonists were evaluated. RESULTS: E2 admi

Prenatal stress alters mouse offspring dorsal striatal development and placental function in sex-specific ways.

Prenatal stress is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, how early stress modification of brain development contributes to this pathophysiology is poorly understood. Ventral forebrain regions such as dorsal striatum are of particular interest: dorsal striatum modulates movement and cognition, is altered in NDDs, and has a primarily GABAergic population. Here, we examine effects of prenatal stress on adult movement, cognition, and dorsal striatum neurobiology in mice using striatal-dependent behavioral assays, immunohistochemis

Radial nerve palsy in the newborn combined with congenital radial head dislocation: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Radial nerve palsy in the newborn and congenital radial head dislocation (CRHD) are both rare disorders, and early diagnosis is challenging. We reported a case of an infant with concurrent presence of these 2 diseases and provide a comprehensive review of the relevant literature. The purpose of the study is to share diagnostic and treatment experiences and provide potentially valuable insights. Dynamic 3D images fusion of the temporomandibular joints: A novel technique.

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate a procedure for fusing images from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical positioning tracking system to dynamically evaluate the relative motion of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). [Autoimmune encephalitis in pediatric population].

Autoimmune encephalitis can be defined as central nervous system inflammation, secondary to multiple causes, where we can possibly identify the formation of auto-antibody against neurotransmitter receptors or neuronal surface proteins. Approximately 50% of patients are seropositive; the auto-antibody against N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are the most common. In the pediatric population, the clinical presentation is characterized by movement disorders and seizures, psychiatric manifestations are more commonly found in young adults. An early intervention is associated with a better progn…

The Added Value of Art for the Well-Being of Older People with Chronic Psychiatric Illnesses and Dementia Living in Long-Term Care Facilities, and on the Collaboration between Their Caregivers and Artists.

This study sought to provide insight into how art activities influence the well-being of long-term care residents, and how artists and caregivers collaborate in offering these activities. In two long-term care facilities for people with dementia and one for older people with chronic psychiatric disorders, an uncontrolled pre- and post-test study was conducted using a mixed-method design. Forty-six residents participated in the study. Three art activities-(a) dance, (b) music and movement, and (c) visual arts-were studied and co-created with the residents and executed by artists and caregivers

A competitive model for striatal action selection.

The direct and indirect pathway striatal medium spiny neurons (dMSNs and iMSNs) have long been linked to action selection, but the precise roles of these neurons in this process remain unclear. Here, we review different models of striatal pathway function, focusing on the classic "go/no-go" model which posits that dMSNs facilitate movement while iMSNs inhibit movement, and the "complementary" model, which argues that dMSNs facilitate the selection of specific actions while iMSNs inhibit potentially conflicting actions. We discuss the merits and shortcomings of these models and propose a "compe
