Pertrochanteric femoral fractures are common and intramedullary nailing is an accepted method for their surgical treatment. Accurate placement of the implant is essential to ensure fixation. We retrospectively analyzed 1334 patients who were implanted standard gamma interlocking nails (SGN) to stabilize trochanteric femoral fractures over the years 1992-1998. Reoperation to remove the nails was performed in 37 patients, in 9 of them purely because of pain. INTRODUCTION: Operative treatment of humeral shaft fractures has gained a new impetus with the development of intramedullary interlocking systems for the humerus. In a follow-up study of 239 consecutive patients with fractures of the femoral neck treated by six surgeons in one hospital by Pugh nailing, Austin Moore prosthesis, or Knowles pinning, 96 per cent could be followed for a minimum of two years or until a definitve result had been reached.
