Radiation therapy: posterior segment complications.

Therapeutic radiation to the posterior segment of the eye is a common option for posterior segment tumors. Such tumors are often malignant, but sometimes, benign neoplasms are treated with ionizing radiation. Also, non-neoplastic intraocular lesions like wet age-related macular degeneration may be treated with radiotherapy. Orbital disease, both neoplastic lesions like optic nerve sheath meningioma and non-neoplastic entities like Graves' ophthalmopathy may be treated with radiotherapy and this may include radiation of the optic nerve and posterior segment of the eye. Occasionally, radiotherap

Experimental syringohydromyelia induced by adhesive arachnoiditis in the rabbit: changes in the blood-spinal cord barrier, neuroinflammatory foci, and syrinx formation.

There are many histological examinations of syringohydromyelia in the literature. However, there has been very little experimental work on blood permeability in the spinal cord vessels and ultrastructural changes. We prepared an animal model of spinal adhesive arachnoiditis by injecting kaolin into the subarachnoid space at the eighth thoracic vertebra of rabbits. The animals were evaluated 4 months later. Of the 30 rabbits given kaolin injection into the cerebrospinal fluid, 23 showed complete circumferential obstruction. In the 7 animals with partial obstruction of the subarachnoid space, in

Effects of axotomy on telomere length, telomerase activity, and protein in activated microglia.

The adult central nervous system (CNS) is generally thought of as a postmitotic organ. However, DNA labeling studies have shown that one major population of nonneuronal cells, called microglia, retain significant mitotic potential. Microglial cell division is prominent during acute CNS injury involving neuronal damage or death. Prior work from this laboratory has shown that purified microglia maintained in vitro with continual mitogenic stimulation exhibit telomere shortening before entering senescence. In the current study, we sought to investigate whether telomere shortening occurs in dividi

MHC class II antigen-expressing cells in cardiac ganglia of the rat.

Cardiac ganglia develop destructive ganglionitis in chronic Chagas' disease and rheumatic heart disease. This ganglionitis is associated with periganglionic infiltrations and is suspected of developing secondary to epicardial inflammation. If so, it would be expected that cardiac ganglia (1) are equipped with an inventory of immune competent cells allowing the initiation of inflammatory processes, and (2) are not effectively protected from the milieu of the surrounding tissue by metabolically active diffusion barriers. These problems were addressed in specified pathogen-free rats by electron m

[The role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of preoperative and postoperative complications caused by acquired cholesteatomas].

The role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of preoperative and postoperative complications caused by acquired cholesteatomas will be described in this paper. The pre- and postoperative imaging of the temporal bone was performed with HRCT and MRI.HRCT and MRI were performed in the axial and coronal plane. MRI was done with T2 weighted and T1 weighted sequences both before and after the intravenous application of contrast material. All imaging findings were confirmed clinically or surgically. The preoperative cholesteatoma-caused

Extracellular pH changes in the superfused cat carotid body during hypoxia and hypercapnia.

Extracellular pH changes were measured in the superfused cat carotid body with double barreled pH glass microelectrodes, under constant pH (7.45 +/- 0.02), temperature (35 degrees C) and flow (3.6 ml/min) of the superfusion medium. Changes of pO2 in the medium from about 188 Torr (30% O2) to 35 or 12 Torr (5% and 2% respectively) called hypoxia, induced a change of the pH signal of about 0.1 units indicating acidification of the tissue. Medium pH monitored with a pH macroelectrode did not change during hypoxic stimulation. An increase of pCO2 in the medium from about 20 Torr (3% CO2, pH 7.45 +

Noradrenergic mechanisms in brain and peripheral organs after aortic nerve transection.

Noradrenergic mechanisms were studied in the hypothalamus, midbrain, medulla, kidney, duodenum, and skeletal muscle of Wistar rats at 3 or 13 days after either bilateral transection of the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) or a sham operation. The rate of decline of tissue norepinephrine (NE) concentration after inhibition of tyrosine hydroxylase with alpha-methyltyrosine was used as an index of NE turnover. Three days after ADN transection, arterial pressure and heart rate were elevated significantly, and NE turnover was increased in all three brain areas, kidney, and skeletal muscle but not in du

Normal and variant anatomy of the elbow on magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides excellent delineation of the bones of the elbow and the surrounding soft tissue structures. The components of the elbow can be divided into osseous structures, the joint capsule and ligaments, muscles and tendons, and nerves. In this article, the authors review the normal anatomy and appearance of these structures on MRI as well as the anatomic variants that should be recognized and distinguished from pathologic entities.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the renal pelvis.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) of the urothelial collecting system are rare. These tumors contain both malignant epithelial and sarcomatous components. Metastatic spread of MPNST is common, however, metastases to the kidney and perirenal tissues are rare. There are only 4 cases reported of MPNST of the kidney. We report a rare case of MPNST arising from the submucosa of the renal pelvis.

[Plastic surgery reconstruction following irradiation].

Radiation damage after combined tumor therapy may involve skin, subcutaneous tissue, nerves, bones and viscera. Ulceration and subsequent infection can result in life-threatening conditions. Early reconstructive procedures restore function, prevent further damage and alleviate pain. Plastic surgery has developed special fasciocutaneous and musculocutaneous flaps for each region.

[Influence of dose-time relationship on the pathogenesis of peripheral neuropathy (author's transl)].

The development of peripheral neuropathies of cranial nerves and of the brachial plexus following curative deoses of irradiation is closely related with the total applied, the number and size of the individual doses per fraction and the overall time. Additional important factors for the occurrence of these late complications are the volume of tissue irradiated and the stage of disease. In the pathogenesis of peripheral neuropathy a combined effect of different factors seems likely.

The relevance of MRI for patient modeling in head and neck hyperthermia treatment planning: a comparison of CT and CT-MRI based tissue segmentation on simulated temperature.

PURPOSE: In current clinical practice, head and neck (H&N) hyperthermia treatment planning (HTP) is solely based on computed tomography (CT) images. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides superior soft-tissue contrast over CT. The purpose of the authors' study is to investigate the relevance of using MRI in addition to CT for patient modeling in H&N HTP. METHODS: CT and MRI scans were acquired for 11 patients in an immobilization mask. Three observers manually segmented on CT, MRI T1 weighted (MRI-T1w), and MRI T2 weighted (MRI-T2w) images the following thermo-sensitive tissues: cerebrum,

High-Resolution Nerve Ultrasound Abnormalities in POEMS Syndrome-A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution nerve ultrasound (HRUS) has been proven to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis of immune-mediated neuropathies, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, skin changes) is an important differential diagnosis of CIDP. Until now, there have been no studies that could identify specific HRUS abnormalities in POEMS syndrome patients. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess possible changes and compare findings with CIDP patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed

Antegrade versus retrograde facial nerve dissection in benign parotid surgery: Is there a difference in postoperative outcomes? A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this meta-analysis was to test the null hypothesis of no difference in facial nerve dysfunction in studies that compared classical antegrade facial nerve dissection (AFND) versus retrograde facial nerve dissection (RFND) during benign parotid surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct and relevant journals was undertaken up to June 27, 2018. Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), and retrospective studies aimed at comparing

Comparison of wideband steady-state free precession and T₂-weighted fast spin echo in spine disorder assessment at 1.5 and 3 T.

Wideband steady-state free precession (WB-SSFP) is a modification of balanced steady-state free precession utilizing alternating repetition times to reduce susceptibility-induced balanced steady-state free precession limitations, allowing its use for high-resolution myelographic-contrast spinal imaging. Intertissue contrast and spatial resolution of complete-spine-coverage 3D WB-SSFP were compared with those of 2D T₂-weighted fast spin echo, currently the standard for spine T₂-imaging. Six normal subjects were imaged at 1.5 and 3 T. The signal-to-noise ratio efficiency (SNR per unit-time and u

Structural abnormalities of the trigeminal root revealed by diffusion tensor imaging in patients with trigeminal neuralgia caused by neurovascular compression: a prospective, double-blind, controlled study.

Because diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is able to assess tissue integrity, we used diffusion to detect abnormalities in trigeminal nerves (TGN) in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) caused by neurovascular compression (NVC). We also studied anatomical TGN parameters (cross-sectional area [CSA] and volume [V]). Using DTI sequencing in a 3-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, we measured the fraction of anisotropy (FA) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of TGN in 10 patients selected as candidates to have microvascular decompression (MVD) for TN, and 6 normal control subjec

Peripheral neuroendocrinology of the cervical autonomic nervous system.

1. The sympathetic superior cervical ganglia (SCG) provide innervation to the pineal gland and median eminence through the internal carotid nerve and to the thyroid and parathyroid glands through the external carotid nerve. 2. Postsynaptic activation in median eminence nerve endings shortly after superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) was accompanied by a depression of LH and FSH release and by a 3-5 day delay in rat estrous cyclicity. A decrease in TSH and GH release and an increase in ACTH and prolactin release were also found. These effects were accompanied by a) an increase in medial basa

The innervation of the human prostate gland--the changes associated with benign enlargement.

Different regions of the prostate gland, namely prostatic capsule, peripheral prostate and central prostate (subdivided into proximal (near the bladder neck), distal (near the verumontanum) and midway between these areas) were obtained from 32 obstructed (stable obstructed, n = 8; unstable obstructed, n = 13; acute retention, n = 11) and five control patients. The innervation of these tissues was studied both histochemically to localise acetylcholinesterase activity and immunohistochemically for dopamine-beta-hydroxylase, 5-hydroxytryptamine, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, neuropeptide Y,

Lumbar Plexopathy and Exploration Following an Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF) iFactor-Associated Complication: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) is a minimally invasive surgical technique used for lumbar spine stabilisation, known for reducing the morbidity associated with traditional posterior lumbar fusion techniques. iFactor, a synthetic bone graft composed of P-15 osteogenic cell-binding peptide and anorganic bone mineral (ABM), is often used in such procedures for its reported high fusion rates and minimal complications. iFactor reports to only form bone when grafted into bone tissue, and not soft tissue. This case report presents a rare but significant complication requiring reop
