High-intensity laser therapy can improve pain, health status and quality of life in women with fibromyalgia: a single blinded-randomized controlled trial.

This study was conducted to explore the influence of High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) on health status, pain intensity, Pain Pressure Threshold (PPT), and Quality of Life (QoL) in Fibromyalgia (FM) women. Fifty-two women with FM were randomly divided into either the HILT group (n = 26) or the control group (n = 26). Those in the HILT group underwent HILT alongside an exercise program consisted of low-impact aerobics training and stretching exercises, while the control group received the exercise program only. Treatments were administered three times per week for six weeks. Fibromyalgia symp

Incidence, Clinical Characteristics, and Underreporting of Low Back Pain in Physically Active Pregnant Women: Prospective Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most frequent complications during pregnancy, with a high and variable incidence. LBP has been associated with physical inactivity, but it has not been evaluated exclusively in physically active (PA) pregnant women. This study aimed T to estimate the incidence of LBP in PA pregnant women and describe its clinical, functional, emotional, and occupational impact. Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort of 147 women with PA pregnancies was recruited between gestational weeks 11 and 13+6. Most (92.5%) hold a university degree. All re

Predicting daily pain fluctuations in fibromyalgia: The role of mental distress and sleep heart-rate.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition that typically involves sharp fluctuations in pain intensity over short time periods. Both mental distress and sleep disturbances have been implicated in FM, yet their putative contributions to pain fluctuations have not been fully defined. We assessed simultaneous fluctuations in pain intensity, mental distress and sleep physiology and behavior among FM patients in natural settings. Specifically, seventy-nine adult FM patients reported their current pain and mental distress levels three times a day (morning, afternoon, evening) over two consecutiv

Associations Between Changes in Pain Sensitization and Disease Activity Following Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drug Therapy in Established Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in pain regulatory mechanisms are common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated whether pain sensitization changes after treatment with a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) and explored associations between changes in pain sensitization and disease activity. METHODS: We included 182 participants with active RA initiating/switching DMARD therapy who were observed for 12 weeks. To assess pain sensitization, participants underwent quantitative sensory testing (QST), including pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) at multiple anatomic sites, tempo

Ending neck pain: the impact of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in cervical radiculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a well-established surgical intervention for cervical radiculopathy, primarily indicated to relieve radicular symptoms. While some studies suggest that ACDF improves neck pain, historical data report inconsistent results. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ACDF on neck pain in patients with isolated cervical radiculopathy treated at a high-volume tertiary care center. METHODS: A retrospective review of all ACDF procedures performed at Leeds General Infirmary between January 2021 and March 2023 was conducted. Inclusion crite

Pain intensity and lower limb dynamic balance were related to the laterality judgment test of patients with patellofemoral pain.

INTRODUCTION: Laterality judgement evaluates the capacity to differentiate between the left and right sides of bodily parts. Cortical body representations are impaired in various musculoskeletal conditions, yet this remains unexplored in individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP). OBJECTIVE: This study compared laterality judgement performance between individuals with PFP and asymptomatic controls. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between laterality judgement and self-reported disability, physical performance, and dynamic stability within the PFP group. METHODS: A secondary ana

Provoked cytokine response is not associated with distress or induced secondary hyperalgesia in people with suppressed HIV.

Psychological distress predicts the onset and worsening of persistent pain, but the mechanisms that underpin this influence are poorly understood. Proinflammatory signalling is a plausible link, given its known connections to distress, pain, and neural upregulation. Sustained distress may prime the inflammatory system to respond more strongly to a phasic noxious challenge, supporting neuroimmune upregulation of central nociceptive signalling and persistent pain. This cross-sectional study tested the hypotheses that in vitro endotoxin-provoked expression of typically proinflammatory cytokines (

Wrist-ankle acupuncture alleviates pain in the acute phase of herpes zoster: A randomized controlled trial.

Alternative therapeutic strategies for herpes zoster, especially for acute phase pain relief, are still largely unexplored. This study aimed to compare the effects of wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with standard pharmacological treatment versus standard pharmacological treatment alone in relieving pain in the acute phase of herpes zoster. An open-label, randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted, enrolling patients diagnosed with acute-phase herpes zoster with pain visual analog scale (VAS) scores greater than or equal to 2. The participants were randomly assigned to either the cont

The impact of perceived injustice on pain and psychological outcomes after traumatic injury: a longitudinal analysis.

Individuals' appraisals regarding the injustice of their pain or physical injury have emerged as a significant risk factor for worse physical and psychological outcomes. Injustice appraisals are defined by perceptions of external blame for pain or injury and viewing pain or injury as a source of irreparable loss. To date, research on the impact of injustice appraisal has been primarily cross sectional, and existing longitudinal studies have examined injustice appraisals at only 2 time points in the context of rehabilitation treatment. This study examined the trajectory of injustice appraisals

Efficacy of 6% Hydroxyethyl Starch and 2% Lidocaine in Reducing the Pain of Propofol Injection: A randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Propofol administration is associated with pain, mediated by the activation of vascular endothelium. Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) inhibits endothelial membrane activation by various nociceptive substances. Thus, this study hypothesised that pre-administration of HES can reduce pain on propofol administration. This study aimed to compare the proportion of patients with no pain on propofol administration and to compare the severity of pain and any change in pre- and post-induction haemodynamic variables. METHODS: This prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial was condu

Pharmacological differences in postoperative cutaneous sensitivity, pain at rest, and movement-induced pain in laparotomized mice.

Postoperative pain management is challenging. We used mice with a transverse laparotomy to study tactile allodynia measured by the von Frey test, pain at rest measured by facial pain expressions detected by an artificial intelligence algorithm, and movement-induced pain measured by reductions in exploratory activity. The standard analgesics morphine and ibuprofen induced distinct patterns of outcome-dependent effects. Whereas morphine was more effective in reversing pain at rest compared to tactile allodynia, it was unable to alter movement-induced pain. Ibuprofen showed comparable effects acr

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain control in women with primary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-pharmacological treatment that works by delivering electrical currents via electrodes attached to the skin at the site of pain. It can be an alternative to pharmacological treatments. The mechanism of action of TENS for pain relief is related to the inhibition of the transmission of painful stimuli, release of endogenous opioids, and reduced muscle ischaemia of the uterus. Although it has been used for primary dysmenorrhoea ((PD); period pain or menstrual cramps), evidence of the efficacy and safety of high-frequency TENS,

Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation Relieves Chronic Neuropathic Pain Along With a Decrease in Cortical γ Power.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is an ideal neuromodulative intervention, providing pain relief in localized chronic pain conditions because γ-band oscillations reflect the intensity of ongoing chronic pain in patients affected. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to observe the role of cortical γ-band power associated with the relief of chronic neuropathic pain through DRG stimulation (DRGS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined nine patients (two women, mean age 56.8 years; range, 36-77 years) diagnosed with chronic neuropathic pain who underwent DRGS therapy. We used the numeric ratin
