We report on a case of a 55-year old patient with a great adnexal tumour (10 x 5 x 8 cm), on the left side with infiltration of the bladder and the pelvis with recurring urinary retention in the kidney. Histological examination revealed an intrauterine device-associated actinomycosis. Following a 6-month high dose penicillin therapy, the abdominal hysterectomy with adnexectomy and partial resection of the bladder with new implantation of the ureter (Boari) was performed. The postoperative period was uneventful, the urogram normal.

The most frequent cause of contrast media extravasation from the renal pelvis is a nephrourolithiasis. There are frequent causes enumerated in the literature, that are also characterized by a mechanical obstruction of the contrast media excretion. The presented case reports are characterized by a technical dependency, namely a long angiographic investigation and an overfilling of the urinary bladder without any indication of an organical excretory impediment. The clinical consequence of such observations should be discussed. 150 ml contrast media should not be exceeded during one examination.

Hemorrhage from the nephrostomy tract is the most common major complication associated with percutaneous nephrostolithotomy. The tamponade nephrostomy catheter is a new addition to the endourologist's instruments; it is expressly designed to achieve immediate tamponade of the nephrostomy tract. The large-diameter, occlusive balloon (36F) is carried on a 14-F nephrostomy tube which is passed over a 5-F ureteral stent. As such, the catheter not only tamponades the nephrostomy tract but effectively drains the renal pelvis, while maintaining ureteral access.

The article describes a case of a solitary neurofibroma of the plexus lumbosacralis causing pain and incomplete leg paresis. The authors have studied standard radiographs of 200 patients with lumbosacral spondylolisthesis, 52 of whom had been treated operatively. The radiographic technique is described. It allows measurement of pelvic retroversion and its influence on the appearance of slipping. The shape of the sacrum is not a consequence of the position of the pelvis but can alter during growth. Trunk imbalance may lead to increased stress with fracture of the pars interarticularis. Observation of these features makes it possible to follow the development of the deformity and to adopt appropriate treatment.

A radiographic survey of 25 patients with bilateral Perthes disease is compared with four inherited skeletal dysplasias also affecting the hip joints (45 patients with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, 22 with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda, 18 with pseudoachondroplasia, and 17 with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita). The distinguishing features in relation to the pelvis and hip joint in the growing child are ascertained, in view of the importance of differentiating as early as possible the transient disorder of Perthes disease from the more serious progressive disorders.

An experimental model for the evaluation of surgical techniques and preservation in extracorporeal surgery is described: staghorn calculi were induced in 15 dogs by the injection of methylmethacrylate into the renal pelvis. Removal of the calculi was carried out 3-4 weeks later on a workbench, using microsurgical techniques and ex situ radiographies. 15 min of warm ischaemic and 6 h of ambiothermic preservation were well tolerated as could be demonstrated by determination of the serum creatinine following autotransplantation and immediate contralateral nephrectomy.

The close relationships between the bony spinal column, spinal marrow and the emerging nerve roots explain the frequency of neurological symptoms of diseases in the region of the lumbar vertebrae, the sacrum and the pelvis. After a short description of the local diagnostic signs in lumbosacral pains, further important differential diagnostic aspects of the changes in the vertebral column besides those of the intervertebral disks, inflammatory changes in the vertebrae, intramedullary tumors as well as a few rare pain syndromes in peripheral nerve diseases are discussed.

Two infants with fibular aplasia and related limb-reduction defects were born to mothers who were using copper-containing intrauterine contraceptive devices. The possibility of a casual association is consistent with the known hazards of intrauterine devices and cannot be excluded on the available experimental evidence. More information is urgently needed, and searches, including radiography of placenta and pelvis, should be made for such devices in mothers who have used them in the past and who give birth to malformed infants.

A new method of retrograde phlebography of the kidney is described; it is carried out by using a balloon catheter in the renal artery for occluding the circulation. The procedure has been carried out in 13 patients without complication. Early experience has provided very good results in the diagnosis of malignant renal tumours; invasion into the venous system can be demonstrated radiologically. In particular, in cases of carcinoma of the renal pelvis, this method represents a significant improvement of the hitherto unsatisfactory angiographic techniques.
